This RM30 million investment is among several industry-leading green advancements – among others, solar energy system and a biogas boiler innovation which led to a significant reduction of CO2 – initiated by the company to spearhead future sustainable growth.

Meanwhile, the need to expand production capacity to meet increasing market demand led IOI Oleo to invest in upgrading existing manufacturing facilities.

IOI Oleo’s solar energy panels in Prai yielded savings equivalent to the need to plant 1.4 million sq m of forest.

Similarly, IOI Pan-Cen invests substantially in eco-technology and was duly recognised at the international Vienna Energy Forum where its energy management projects were shared with the panellists and invited guests. It also received the “Leadership in Energy Performance” award for contributing towards energy efficiency. Its participation is covered on page 13 of this issue. Participants giving the thumbs-up with visually-impaired trainers and guides.

he Dialogue in the Dark (DiD) is premised on a simple concept T– visitors are led by visually-impared guides through specially- designed darkened rooms where the daily routines take on a new dimension. Since 1988, DiD has been presented in more than 38 countries and 170 cities to more than seven million visitors around the world.

Two half-day experiential learning workshops were held on 3 September 2015 in the DiD Experiential Centre in Sunway University. Each workshop comprised 19 participants from the Plantation, Property and Corporate divisions. Participants spent three hours in the dark going through a series of team challenges, assisted by visually-impaired DiD trainers. These challenges created a range of unpredictable situations similar to many business landscapes.

Participants faced the experience of temporarily losing their most dominant sense – their sight, which resulted in a dramatic slowdown in their activity and movement. Since it is not possible to use their visual sense, the participants have to rely on new resources, instincts and unused potential to reach a set goal. The workshops conducted in complete darkness essentially tested the participants’ limits, leading to a tangible experience of combining one’s emotional and social competence as they were challenged to solving tasks within groups.

The DiD trainers were capable of bringing participants to an inspiring learning atmosphere of authenticity, empathy and openness – thus enhancing human interaction and mutual understanding. This iexperience brings about dramatic insights for professional leaders in their everyday routines. This remains true to famous philosopher Martin Buber’s adage, “The only way to learn is through encounter.”

n 29 August 2015, 80 members of Kelab Keluarga IOI (KKIOI) Odeparted for a trip to Dannok and Hatyai in Thailand. They arrived in Dannok, a small town bordering Malaysia and Thailand in Songkhla Province, ferried by two chartered buses after an overnight journey from Klang Valley.

The KKIOI members, some with family in tow, excitedly toured the Dannok Panda Garden where adults and children alike happily took photos of the adorable panda replicas. Next, they visited “Dinosaur Park”, a family-friendly park with life-like replicas and lots of information on pre-historic predators like T-Rex.

They also stopped by the many parks located in the same area such as “Rabbit Garden”, “Pig Village” and “18 Lohan”. The children fed horses and saw peacocks and ostriches at the mini zoo too. During lunchtime, the group enjoyed a sumptuous meal of traditional Thai food at the Waterview Restaurant overlooking a magnificent view of the river. Interestingly, the food was sent over to the tables (in huts built atop the river) via motor boats!

On the second day, KKIOI members visited Samila Beach and had an array of seafood for lunch. Some made a beeline to the famous Golden Mermaid statue to take photos with their family and colleagues, while others relaxed under the sun and sea breeze.

Another highlight of the trip was the visit to Klong Hae Floating Market where everyone got a chance to explore the unique trading place by the local people who use waterway transportation. These vendors in wooden rickety boats (also known as “sampans”) are moored along the Khlong Hae canal. KKIOI members were seen excitedly bargain-hunting for fresh food and souvenirs.
