By LOU MCCALL

Of all the outstanding athletic achieve- ments of the Questa Schools, it is the Questa Cheerleaders who have put Ques- ta on the sports map. Coach Kathy Gon- zales has been leading the team to victory for 15 years. In Questa’s history there have been three state championships and the Questa Cheerleaders have won two, in 2017 and 2018. And of course, we are proud of our 1994 State Basketball Champions, too! In July, Questa Cheer attended a three- day Universal Cheer Association (UCA) camp in Belen, to qualify for the All American Team. Fourteen girls at- tended and five were voted the best in the country to join the All American Team. They also came back to Questa with awards, including Best Team Technique Award and the Superior Trophy Award. Those attending the event were impressed because Questa was the smallest team represented and came from the smallest school, with less than 100 total students at the high school. Here at Wild Rivers we have some of the best ‘night skies’ in the country. Lee Mesibov, Colin Nichols, and El Valle Astronomers will bring their big telescopes and through their knowledge of the stars, will focus in on galaxies, star clusters, and perhaps a planet or two. Dress warmly and have a red filter on your flashlight. Telescopes will be set up in the Wild Rivers Visitor Center parking lot.

By SARA MARTINEZ

If you have ever walked down the halls of Rio Costilla Southwest Learn- ing Academy (RCSLA) in Costilla, you knew you were in a different type of learning environment. It may be the smallest school in the Questa Indepen- dent School District (QISD), but even newcomers instantly felt a sense of family and community. In recent years, Rio Costilla students have performed well on standardized tests and were improving more and more each year. Small class sizes, strong community ties, parental involvement, and phenomenal staff and teachers have made RCSLA what it is today. Not only did students learn from teachers who placed high value on af- terschool tutoring and a commitment to improving scores, they had caring staff and an amazing Parent-Teacher Associ- ation, the only one in the Questa School District.
