ABSTRACT BIRDS, CHILDREN, AND LONELY MEN IN CARS AND THE SOUND OF WRONG by Justin Edwards My thesis is a collection of short stories. Much of the work is thematically centered around loneliness, mostly within the domestic household, and the lengths that people go to get out from under it. The stories are meant to be comic yet dark. Both the humor and the tension comes from the way in which the characters overreact to the point where either their reality changes a bit to allow it for it, or they are simply fooling themselves. Overall, I am trying to find the best possible way to describe something without actually describing it. I am working towards the peripheral, because I feel that readers believe it is better than what is out in front. Nerone, Chair and Director of Research Associate Professor Michelle Renee Nelson Associate Professor Christian Edward Sandvig Professor Daniel Toby Schiller ii ABSTRACT The interaction of policy and technological development in the era of “convergence” is messy and fraught with contradictions. The best expression of this condition is found in the story behind the development and proliferation of digital audio broadcasting (DAB). Radio is the last of the traditional mass media to navigate the convergence phenomenon; convergence itself has an inherently disruptive effect on traditional media forms. However, in the case of radio, this disruption is mostly self-induced through the cultivation of communications policies which thwart innovation. A dramaturgical analysis of digital radio’s technological and policy development reveals that the industry’s preferred mode of navigating the convergence phenomenon is not designed to provide the medium with a realistically useful path into a 21st century convergent media environment. Instead, the diffusion of “HD Radio” is a blocking mechanism proffered to impede new competition in the terrestrial radio space. HD Radio has several critical shortfalls: it causes interference and degradation to existing analog radio signals; does not have the capability to actually advance the utility of radio beyond extant quality/performance metrics; and is a wholly proprietary technology from transmission to reception. -

November 2009 Offer Teenagers Positive, Age-Appropriate Discipline Like many aspects of parenting, discipline can get trickier as children turn into teen- agers. Although your kids are outgrowing timeouts or the loss of television privileges, they haven't outgrown the need for loving, healthy boundaries-and consequences when they mess up. Discipline methods may change as kids age, but the goal is the same: shaping them into responsible, respectful Christian adults who internalize God- honoring boundaries and good behavior. Even when teenagers have more say in their rules, parents still have important roles to play. You clearly communicate and enforce the expectations and limits. You stand your ground when teenagers challenge your authority. You discipline (and follow through) in a calm, consistent way. You're present during good and bad times, assur- ing teenagers that you love them even when they mess up. Finally, you model good behavior, showing how loving obedience yields rewards. Parenting expert Jim Burns says the goal of discipline is to teach kids responsibility, not to evoke obedience. "Our job is not to always prevent our children from making mistakes but rather to make certain they learn from their mistakes," he says. This needs to be done in a relaxed, respectful way, and it's the parent's job to establish this tone. "Shame-based parenting, when parents attempt to influence their kids' behavior through shaming, nagging, and negativity, simply doesn't work in the long run," Burns says. In the Bible, the book of Jonah tells of a prophet who learned a tough lesson about disobeying God. -

Across the street is the small strip of metropark separating the Hudson River from the Riverside Drive apartment buildings. FELIX UNGAR, out-of-place in his tailored suit, stands in front of the buildings. He is in his early forties, well-groomed, and carries with him a small suitcase. FELIX This is a nightmare. The good thing about nightmares is that there is always a happy ending: you wake up. But I'm already awake. So maybe this is worse than a nightmare. FELIX places his fingers on his wrist. My pulse is very fast. If I were dreaming, it would naturally be a lot slower.
