MAX Security Report [email protected] +44 203 540 0434 Protest India Tactical: Opposition parties to hold 15 statewide strike across Andhra Pradesh on APR April 16; maintain vigilance 11:28 UTC Please be advised • Opposition parties in Andhra Pradesh will reportedly hold a day-long strike across the state on April 16 to protest the central government’s denial of a special status. The YSR Congress Party, Jana Sena, and Left parties have backed the strike. Apart from emergency services, all private and public establishments are expected to be shut down. • The ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has not expressed support for the strike but has been a key campaigner against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government over the special status category issue in recent months. Parties in Andhra Pradesh have been petitioning the government allot Andhra Pradesh with a special status in order to increase funding to the state. page 1 / 2 Assessments 1. The strike on April 16 is liable to witness statewide implementation due to the broad-based support that the issue has drawn across the political spectrum. Despite the absence of explicit support from the TDP, the ruling party in the state is unlikely to prevent the strike’s implementation as it will not want to be perceived as going against Andhra interests. Businesses that remain open, or vehicles plying on major roads in the state are liable to targeted by pro-Andhra activists over the course of the day. 2. Outside of Andhra Pradesh, there is a likelihood that the strike’s impact may spill over into neighboring Telangana, as protesters from these political groups may seek to block roads leading to Hyderabad. Small-scale rallies by groups such as Jana Sena in Hyderabad, the former official capital of Andhra Pradesh, are also likely to occur. Meanwhile, there is a distinct possibility that these parties may also organize protests in Delhi to highlight their cause with the BJP government. In both Delhi and Hyderabad, local police are unlikely to be sympathetic to the cause and may arrest protesters, leading to localized unrest at such events. Recommendations 1. Those operating or residing in Andhra Pradesh on April 16 are advised to maintain vigilance due to the slated strike, while limiting outdoor movement on the day. 2. We advise to avoid the vicinity of all political rallies in Hyderabad and Delhi associated with the special status cause due to the risk of unrest and police action. page 2 / 2 Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org).
