and Oceans H2020-BG-2014 Rapid technological progress in working offshore in ever-deeper waters, the need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and the need to look at how the 71 % of the planet that is seas and oceans can deliver human necessities such as food and energy in a sustainable way have opened up an opportunity for blue growth with the aim to harness the huge potential of Europe's oceans, seas and coasts for jobs and growth. This focus area addresses this overall challenge through five cross- cutting priority domains supporting the Blue Growth Agenda: valorising the diversity of marine life; sustainable harvesting the deep-sea resources; new offshore challenge; ocean observation technologies; and the socioeconomic dimension. The aim of the focus area is to improve the understanding of the complex interrelations between various maritime activities, technologies, including space enabled applications, and the marine environment to help boost the marine and maritime economy by accelerating its potential through R&I in a sustainable manner. It will enhance sectorial and cross-sectorial cooperation by building on major international, national and regional initiatives. The Blue Growth economy in the EU is expected to grow to 7 million people employed by 2020. Actions in this area will support the EU 'Blue Growth' strategy and relevant EU policies (e.g. Sea Basins Strategies and Action Plans) as well as provide support for international cooperation. To maximize the impacts of activities undertaken under this Focus Area, the 2014 WP of Horizon 2020, focuses on key priorities for the EU, so as to mobilize the necessary critical mass to tackle these large cross-cutting challenges with adequate scale and scope. The 2014 Work – Programme under the Societal Challenge 2 (Food security, sustainable agriculture and forestry, marine and maritime and inland water research and the bioeconomy) of Horizon 2020, puts

ABSTRACT The Internet of Things (IoT) has led towards a digital world in which everything becomes connected. Unfortunately, most of the currently marketed connected devices feed vertically-oriented closed systems (commonly referred to as vertical silos) which prevent the development of a unified global IoT. This issue is all the more valid in complex environments, such as smart cities, in which exceedingly large amounts of heterogeneous sensor data are collected, and in which platforms and stakeholders should also be able to interact and cooperate. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to move towards the creation of open IoT ecosystems to support efficient smart city service integration, discovery and composition.

    M OUN KY T C A I O N R I N E STIT U T Seven Challenges for Energy Transformation Our Challenge to Transform Friends and Colleagues: Many of us, working in our own ways on energy and climate issues, are asking: How can we rise to meet the urgency of the climate challenge in the next 10 years? Whether we are 60 years old or 16, we share the reality that the decade immediately ahead is a pivotal time in the history of life on earth. It is a time when many possibilities are still open, but the window of opportunity to avoid the most severe consequences of climate change is closing quickly. Climate scientists are telling us, plainly and clearly, that if we reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions 40%–50% by 2030, a world with only 1.5°C of average global temperature increase is still possible. The scientific evidence also shows that the difference between 1.5°C and 2.0°C of warming, although seemingly small, would be tremendously consequential not just for our lives but for those of all future generations of living beings. The consequences of a world with 3°C–4°C of warming, which we are currently tracking toward, are almost unimaginable. So, how can we respond? Putting 500% more effort against the climate challenge while still using the same approach is not enough to achieve the breakthroughs we need. At Rocky Mountain Institute, this realization is challenging us to think more creatively about how we can be more effective and to fundamentally adjust how we work.

Vermonte Center for Strategic and International Studies Japan and Indonesia, as two maritime democracies and archipelago nations, are in a strong position to further cooperate and contribute to sustaining regional security in the coming decades of a major shift and challenges in the global order. We would like Asia to remain the primary engine of global growth in the decades ahead. To make this a reality, we urge governments to take the initiative to keep the Indo-Pacific region stable and open. Uncertainty is everywhere. It is natural for the major powers in the coming decades, such as the United States (US), China, and India, to seek unilateral and assertive action. This could corner smaller countries into inconvenient strategic choices. Indonesia and Japan need to strengthen their ties as two regional powers that share common social and political principles, characters, and geopolitical settings. In strengthening our principles of democracy, a rules-based society, respect for human rights, and economic growth, we also need to shape the international and regional order to our principles. Our approach will be based on independence, non-intervention, and multilateralism without seeking domination over one another but rather the building of stability and openness. Maritime Security and Sea Power: A Geopolitical Challenge Maritime space has been the foundation of the global order for the past 300 years. This is due to the way global wealth has been created primarily through connectivity and communication lines.
