The northeast edge of the Aegean is dominated by the islands of Limnos, Agios Efstratios, Lesvos, Psara, Chios, Oinousses, Samos, Ikaria and Fournoi. Singular islands, with history’s marks still easily discernible, they are living organisms of multifaceted cultural activity and expression, with popular events and traditions, performing and visual art forms, local products and practices, and architectural styles. The unique natural environment and variety of scenery make the islands of the N. Aegean stand out and lead visitors to trails for exploration and recreation. Wetlands with rare flora and fauna, salt marshes, waterfalls, dense forests of pine, walnut, oak, olive groves, mastic trees are just a few of the things to be enjoyed on the islands. The islands of the North Aegean, so very different from one another, like the pebbles on a beach, have something that brings them together and yet makes them stand out. Journal of Marine Science and Engineering Article Relative Sea Level Changes and Morphotectonic Implications Triggered by the Samos Earthquake of 30th October 2020 Niki Evelpidou 1,* , Anna Karkani 1 and Isidoros Kampolis 2 1 Faculty of Geology and Geoenvironment National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Panepistimiopolis, 15774 Athens, Greece; [email protected] 2 Department of Geological Sciences, School of Mining & Metallurgical Engineering, National Technical University of Athens, 15773 Athens, Greece; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract: On 30th October 2020, the eastern Aegean Sea was shaken by a Mw = 7.0 earthquake. The epicenter was located near the northern coasts of Samos island. This tectonic event produced an uplift of the whole island as well as several cases of infrastructure damage, while a small tsunami followed the mainshock. Underwater and coastal geological, geomorphological, biological obser- vations and measurements were performed at the entire coast revealing a complex character for the uplift. At the northwestern part of the island, maximum vertical displacements of +35 ± 5 cm were recorded at the northwestern tip, at Agios Isidoros. Conversely, the southeastern part was known for its subsidence through submerged archaeological remains and former sea level standstills. The 2020 underwater survey unveiled uplifted but still drowned sea level indicators. The vertical displacement at the south and southeastern part ranges between +23 ± 5 and +8 ± 5 cm suggesting a gradual fading of the uplift towards the east. The crucial value of tidal notches, as markers of co-seismic events, was validated from the outcome of this study. The co-seismic response of Samos coastal zone to the 30th October earthquake provides a basis for understanding the complex tectonics of this area.

Every day, at different places of the world, the planet sends alarming messages about the enormous transformations it is experiencing due to human-based activities. The latter are responsible for changing weather patterns that threaten food production, energy production and energy consumption, the desertification of land, the displacement of people and animals because of food and water shortages due to the reductions in rainfall, natural disasters and rising sea levels. The effects of climate change affect us all, and if drastic measures are not considered in a timely manner, it will be more difficult and costly to adapt to the aforementioned effects in the future. Considering this context, the aim of this work is to implement a prospective study/structural analysis to the identified sectors of a regional plan of adaptation to climate change so as to promote the resilience of the region against the negative phenomena generated by the climate crisis.

  • Samos Destination Guide
Samos Destination Guide Overview of Samos Samos is the Aegean's easternmost island and is separated from the Turkish mainland by the narrow Strait of Mycale. The renowned ancient mathematician, Pythagoras, was born on the island in the 6th century BC. Samos also claims to be the birthplace of the goddess Hera, and the remains of a temple built in her honour can be found near the city of Pythagoreio. Since then, Samos has often passed between Greek and Turkish hands, before returning to Greece for good in 1913. Today, Visitors will find busy holiday resorts, beaches sprinkled with sunbeds and waterfronts lined with tavernas, bars and cafes. Samos town curls around a semi-circular bay, with pretty pastel-coloured buildings rising in tiers up a green hillside. Numerous other coastal towns and villages encircle the island. Further inland, travellers can visit delightful mountain villages, where friendly locals and picturesque alleyways offer an authentic taste of Greece. Samos is blessed with a dramatic, indented coastline, dotted with sand and shingle coves, while inland the slopes of the mountains and hills are covered in vines and verdant forests.
