This is particularly true when it comes to lesbians and gays, who share a similar predicament but often experience it from different perspectives. Oppression between the lesbian community on the one hand and gay men on the other comes in many forms, but none are as insidious, or indeed as ridiculous, as one group putting down the sexuality of the other. Since OutWeek began publishing, a number of gay men have objected to articles, photos, or features dis- cussing women's sexuality or depicting their bodies. "I don't want to know that much about lesbians," they say. "Why do we need to look at mAT in a gay magazine?" Some women feel the same about men. A lesbian newspaper recently chided OutWeek for urging a contin- uation of the Coors advertising boycott in gay publica- tions while at the same time we ourselves continue to accept "disgusting" phone sex ads that "lesbians find so offensive." Both of these negative attitudes have been tradition- ally upheld and affirmed by many facets of gay and les- bian ·culture. Some even go so far as to say that there's something 'natural' about expressing disgust for the sex- ual practices of the opposite homosex. There's not. It's important to remember that straight society's oppression of us is based on a similar idea: that there's something inherently disgusting about homosexuality, and by extension homosexuals. It's not our brilliance they.hate, or our love for each other, or our compassion, or our politics, or what we wear or the food we eat. It's what we do in bed. It therefore stands to reason that we couldn't more foolishly play into the hands of Jesse Helms or William Dannemeyer than to agree with them that what our gay brothers or lesbian sisters do with their bodies is disgusting. Our message to the heterosexual sea that surrounds us is: Our sexuality is not bad-just different and as good as yours. How can we expect them to believe that if so many of us express disgust toward the sexuality of the other half of our community. We think that both gay men and lesbians should seek out and familiarize themselves with the images and con- cepts of the others' sexualities. We should reject the learned tendendes to make fun of or express revulsion toward the others' sexualities.And we should learn not just to tolerate our sexual differences,but to celebrate them.     The GLOW Collection Founded on April 9th, 1988, the Gay and Lesbian Organisation of the Witwatersrand (GLOW) aimed to create an explicitly non-homophobic, non- racist, and non-sexist space for gays and lesbians living in and around Johannesburg. The organisation was founded in part by Simon Nkoli, an anti- apartheid activist who saw his political struggle as interlinked with his struggle for gay rights. Before he was unlawfully imprisoned for his association with the United Democratic Front (UDF) under the Delmas Treason Trial, Nkoli had been a member of the Gay Association of South Africa (GASA) and led its racially inclusive Saturday Group in Soweto. Nkoli, however, felt that GASA, a mainly white and apolitical organisation, was not working towards the anti-apartheid struggle and had not done enough to protest his imprisonment. Created after his release from prison, GLOW eventually had chapters across the city, including in Sheila Lapinsky (of OLGA) and Simon Nkoli Hillbrow, KwaThema, Berea, Soweto, and Yeoville. In 1990, GLOW would organize the continent’s first Pride march, with marchers chanting, “We’re here, we’re queer, we’re everywhere!” through the streets of Braamfontein. Looking through the range of correspondences, publications, lobbying material, and minutes in the collection, it becomes clear that GLOW offered a range of resources as a community based organisation aiming to increase lesbian and gay visibility. It produced a monthly Glowletter featuring organisational updates, advertisements for pen pals, international gay rights news, book reviews, comics, and letters from GLOW From 1991 Pride March edition of Glowletter members reacting to a range of topics.

    The University of Sydney Faculty of Education and Social Work Chiaroscuro: The uses of ‘Homophobia’ and Homophobic Violence in Armed Conflicts and Political Transitions JOSE FERNANDO SERRANO-AMAYA A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy August 2014 ii Abstract This research connects studies of gender and sexualities with studies of political conflicts, conflict resolution and democratisation, using two in-depth case studies (Colombia and South Africa). It explores the hypothesis that homophobia, or the set of hatreds bundled under that term, plays a fundamental role in the dispute for hegemony between antagonists during political transitions. The study shows how homophobia, as a form of gender and sexual violence, has both a constructive and deconstructive character in political transitions. It contributes to the transformation of gender and sexual orders required by warfare and deployed by armed groups. It also reinforces the creation of consensus around the projects of change implemented by them. From the perspective of individuals and their organisations such hatreds are part of the embodied experience of violence caused by protracted conflicts and social inequalities. In their struggles for dignity, such violence becomes a reason to mobilise and to transform themselves into political activists. This PhD research is important for theoretical, methodological and political reasons. Theoretically, it creates links between fields of study that have been developed separately from each other, reading concepts applied in one field with the lens of the other. Debates on ‘non-normative’ sexualities are useful in discussing normative concepts such as ‘conflict resolution’. Methodologically, the research analyses issues of documentation, memory and case construction that are of relevance in the field of human rights and gender in post-conflict reconstruction.

    Archiving an Icon: GALA’s Simon Nkoli Collection Introduction Good morning my name is Linda Chernis and I am the archivist at Gay & Lesbian Memory in Action, known as GALA. We are currently the only LGBTI archive in Africa. GALA was started by Graeme Reid in 1997 as part of the South African History Archives, then based at Wits Historical Papers, and although we are still based on campus, we now function as an independent non-profit organisation. GALA celebrates its 20th anniversary next year. Today I just want to share some thoughts, ideas and musings about GALA and how our collections are used, using the lens of our most accessed collection, that of activist Simon Nkoli. When writers and researchers include a paragraph, page or chapter on South Africa’s LGBTI history, it is usually the Simon Nkoli story that is told. The Simon Nkoli Collection has become GALA’s default ‘flagship collection’ and it seems that this can raise some interesting questions. I thought it would be useful to try and understand why this collection holds such interest, and what we can learn from this, and also to ask whether there are any problems associated with a single collection receiving such intensive attention, in contributing to a single (and possibly over-used) narrative to tell the story of a marginalised group. About 20% of the archival researchers to GALA in 2015 used the Simon Nkoli collection. And all three long-term researchers came to South Africa specifically to look at the Nkoli collection. Two of these were Fulbright scholars and the third researcher, Z’etoile Imma, is writing a book looking at the increasingly iconic status of Nkoli, titled: “Our Queer Mandela: Simon Nkoli, the Archive, and the Uses of an African Queer Icon".

The city has notoriously become known as the gay capital of Africa. This is an odd characterisation. How can an African city be gay, in the midst of such homophobia? Does Cape Town see itself as gay because of its colonial settler history related to imprisonement Queering Cape Town in Robben Island? Or does it become gay because every year in summer, white gay men flock the streets of Greenpoint, Cape Town to party topless? Or is it gay because elsewhere in South Africa there is a lesbian city, a transgender city, a bisexual city, an intersex city? This booklet is interested in rethinking the notion of a gay Cape Town. The city, for many, is not an easy one to negotiate. For most black people, Cape Town functions as a form of a closet, a place you come to during certain hours of the day, or night to offer one’s labour and leave at the end of the day. It is not a place one lives in. Living takes place in the townships and suburbs, under the bridges of highways, or in public parks.

    Article ‘Gay and Zulu, we speak isiNgqumo’: Ethnolinguistic identity constructions Stephanie Rudwick [email protected] Abstract South Africa was one of the first countries in the world to include a sexual orientation clause in its Bill of Rights and in 2006 became the first African country to legalise same-sex marriage. Research studies on gay and lesbian speech varieties, however, have thus far been limited to Cage’s (2003) pioneering publication of Gayle which is South Africa’s English/Afrikaans gay variety and a recent paper on isiNgqumo, its African language equivalent (Rudwick and Ntuli 2008). South Africa’s history of segregation and its prevailing multilingualism and multiculturalism, offers particularly intricate social, cultural and linguistic dynamics among sub-cultures in the society, such as the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bi-sexual and Transgender) community. Against the background of South Africa’s apartheid policy and the history of black homosexuality, this paper explores ethnolinguistic identity constructions involved in the usage of isiNgqumo, a gay linguistic variety spoken by black, predominantly Zulu men. It draws from qualitative interview data with Zulu gay men in the province of KwaZulu-Natal and portrays individual and collective subjectivities. While it is true that the popular view of Zulu ethnicity as a fixed and static group identity is still widely prevalent (Wright 2008: 35), this paper demonstrates some of the multifaceted, flexible, and dynamic nature of current Zuluness in relation to a particular linguistic variety of isiZulu. A host of businesses, residential complexes, bars, and restaurants made Hillbrow the locus of an emerging gay and lesbian presence in the country. On a 2012 visit to Gay and Lesbian Memory in Action (formerly the Gay and Lesbian Archives of South Africa) in Johannesburg, archivist Gabriel Hoosain accompanied me on a Queer Walking Tour of Hillbrow, a cultural historical experience that I hope to translate in this essay. The area is no longer the gayborhood it was in the 1980s and 1990s. There are some buildings and spots which stand out as legendary: Connections, which began as a gay bar about three decades ago, but soon became a popular venue for lesbians; Skyline bar, where the first pride parade was planned; and the corner of Twist and Pretoria streets named after the black gay activist Simon Nkoli.
