Ramakrishna Math & Ramakrishna Mission RAMAKRISHNA MISSION VIVEKNAGAR : TRIPURA (WEST) HISTORY On 25 March 1985 the Governing Body of Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, West Bengal, took over the management of Sri Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama, Gangail Road, Agartala, a privately-run Ashrama established on 29 May 1950, at the request of the latter though the first service activity of the Mission in Tripura dates back to 1949 when the Mission conducted a major relief work at Anandanagar, near Agartala. The said Ashrama renamed as ‘Ramakrishna Mission, Gangail Road,’ started functioning since then as a branch centre of the Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, West Bengal. Till 28 May 1989 this centre was the hub of Ramakrishna Mission’s activities in Tripura with its following activities: 1) Conducting regular spiritual and value-based public discourses at its existing Lecture Hall attached to the Prayer Room, 2) Show Room of Ramakrishna – Vivekananda and Vedanta literature, 3) A small Library, 4) A free Students’ Home, 5) Free medical clinics, etc.. After the establishment of Ramakrishna Mission Educational Complex at Viveknagar on 29 May 1989, which became the hub of Mission’s activities, this centre started functioning as the sub- centre of Viveknagar centre. The service activities of the Mission gathered momentum in Tripura with the establishment of Ramakrishna Mission Educational Complex as a branch centre of the Ramakrishna Mission, Belur Math, West Bengal, in the year 1989 at Viveknagar – then known as ‘Amtali’ – a rural area located 8 k.m. away from Agartala, capital town of the State of Tripura. The development of this Educational Complex has an important background history which deserves special mention. In 1989, a Peace Accord was executed between the Governments (Govt. of India and Govt. of Tripura) and Tripura National Volunteers, the then prominent local extremist group, and following the said Peace Accord, Ramakrishna Mission Educational Complex was established at Viveknagar on 29 May in 1989, on the land measuring about 62 acres handed over to Mission by the Government of Tripura, with the infrastructure gradually developed with the funds from the Government of India. Government of Tripura also handed over to the Mission Authorities a plot of land measuring about 5 acres in Dhaleswar area of Agartala on 29 May 1989 with the request to develop there a complex consisting of educational, cultural and medical units. It took about 7 years to start the said complex at Dhaleswar. On 11 September 1996, the historic day of Swami Vivekananda’s legendary appearance in the well-known Parliament of Religions at Chicago in 1893, Viveknagar centre started developing the Dhaleswar complex as one of its sub-centres to fulfill the wishes of the Government of Tripura mentioned above. Thus the activities of Ramakrishna Mission in Tripura started in full swing from 1989 from Gangail Road Unit and Viveknagar centre along with the contiguous Math centre at Viveknagar, with the objectives of uplifting the masses, especially the local tribes and fostering the idea of national integration and tribal and non-tribal amity, and the central focus being the development and 1 Short Report uplift of the tribal and poor people of Tripura particularly in the area of education, culture, self- employment, health and hygiene, and cultural and spiritual enrichment of the people of Tripura in general. From September 1996 onwards Viveknagar Centre started functioning in broader scale with its two sub-centres at Gangail Road and Dhaleswar in Agartala. Over years the people of Tripura in general have been highly appreciative of Mission’s activity. The phenomenon of regionalism is a pre-independence problem which has got many manifestation after independence. It is also asserted that regionalism is a complex amalgam of geo-cultural, economic, historical and psychic factors.

    RANEN SEN Indian Communist History Revisited Sankar Ray September 26 this year was nostalgic for the veterans among communists including those who used to keep the party card literally close to the chest. They are an endangered species these days. Dr Ranen Sen, one of the three members of the first central committee (1933) of undivided Communist Party of India (CPI) was born on this day in 1909. Other two were Abdul Halim and Somnath Lahiri. Halim Saheb was dropped in 1943 while Lahirida was dropped in 1951. He was suspended for having been one of the main functionaries as a polit bureau member during the disastrous period of ‘Left adventurism” under B T Ranadive who was expelled in 1951 and remained so until 1955. However, Ranenda, who became a polit bureau member in 1952 (remained there until 1956) was never dropped from the CC (later national council, when CC was rechristened as NC) until the party split in 1964. Although politically and ideologically close to the ‘democratic front’(DF)-liners, who later decided to split the CPI and form a new party at the Tenali Congress (coincidentally on the 51st birthday of Jyoti Basu, 8 July 1964), Ranenda remained with the CPI although ‘national front’(NF)-liners used to dominate the party after the split. But even NF-liners revered him as a party-builder. Defending his decision to stay back in CPI, Ranenda said : “Bhupesh Gupta, Sohan Singh Josh (originally belonged to the Ghadar Party-SR) subscribed to the DF line but never endorsed splitting activities and Trotskyite line of Mao and CP of China.

After the Russian revolution, a large number of Indian revolutionaries and youths were inspired by the ideology of Communism and communist ideology started to gain ground in Indian soil. During 1920’s various communist groups emerged in different parts of the country. At the initiative of M.N. Roy, the Communist Party of India was first established in Tashkent in 1920 and ultimately, the party was formed within India in 1925 by uniting different individual communist groups of the country in Kanpur. In the communist movements of India, Surma-Barak valley of Assam did not lag behind. The Communists Party and organisation also developed in Surma-Barak valley of Assam which had raised its head from the district of Sylhet which was the nerve centre of political activities at that time. The organisation of the C.P.I in Sylhet was formed in 1935 and in Cachar in 1938. Like other parts of India, the revolutionary youths and students laid the base of the CPI in Surma-Barak valley.

A través de su trabajo de autodefensa, lxs comunistas han impulsa- do a cientos de millones de personas a la acción para lograr cambios de gran alcance en la sociedad. Lucharon contra disputas religiosas sectarias y la discriminación de castas, movilizaron a trabajadorxs y campesinxs para luchar por sus derechos y trabajaron para cam- biar la consciencia del pueblo en dirección progresista, con el fin de hacer a la sociedad más vivible para todos los sectores marginados, explotados y oprimidos. El movimiento comunista es consciente de que la explotación de los seres humanos por otros seres humanos solo puede terminar con el establecimiento de una sociedad socia- lista y su transición hacia el comunismo. La lucha por este objetivo continúa en los difíciles tiempos que la humanidad enfrenta hoy en día. Lxs comunistas indixs son patriotas, su práctica está profundamente arraigada en la realidad socioeconómica y cultural de la India, pero consideran que su actividad revolucionaria en el país es parte intrín- seca de la lucha internacional por la liberación y la emancipación humana.

Your state, according to latest statistics, has emerged with the highest rate of literacy. How could you achieve this apparently ‘impossible’ success? A: We have adopted a clear and candid attitude as regards the spread of literacy and educa- tion. We have come out with the declaration that education is the birth right of the people and eve- rybody needs to be given the opportunity to educate himself/herself. In order to transform our atti- tude into action we have adopted a number of meaningful steps. We began by increasing the budgetary allocation for education which now accounts for 20% of the entire budget. This means out of every 100 rupees spent 20 rupees go for education. Secondly, along with the increase in budgetary allocation we have given a great emphasis to child’s education, beginning from the pre-primary stage. Anganwadi centres have now been transformed into schools for tiny tots where children aged from 3-5 receive education. We are trying to bring as many children as possible to these pre-primary schools. And let me claim modestly, we have achieved 100% success in this sphere. The importance of the pre-primary stage is great because children can start going to primary schools only after completing the pre-primary stage.
