The North Dakota Petroleum Marketers continue to be given a seat at the table when it comes to energy issues in the state. In early September NDPMA President, Mike Rud, was invited by Senators John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer to sit in on an energy roundtable in Minot keynoted by U.S. Energy Secretary Dan Brouillette. Rud was part of a discussion centered on the continued importance of fossil fuels in North Dakota as they related to the energy and transportation sectors.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, NDPMA is gearing up for what will likely be the most unique and challenging State Legislative Session in some time. Rest assured, the Association office and the NDPMA Board of Directors will be doing everything in their power to protect and enhance your business interests. The Association will likely be calling on all of you from time to time to step up and talk to legislative leaders in your districts. YOUR VOICES MATTER. BE HEARD!

The best description of this past year is UNBELIEVABLE!! I hope everyone is doing well and managing the adversity of our society. Together we will get through these difficult times!

This past year has not been “business as usual” to say the least. 2020 is kicking my butt. Staffing has been challenging due to COVID-19 positive cases and quarantines. Sales are down and inventory has been hard to get. I am guessing our OLDER board members (Matt) have never seen a year like this.

You are receiving this booklet in the mail, because we unable to have our convention this year. We will try to have one in February, however, this plan may change.

The current state of our society, is all the more reason to be a part of NDPMA. Almost daily, we are seeing many of our freedoms being challenged. Increased regulation and taxes are likely to be proposed. We are here to advocate for our businesses and speak up against harmful and unnecessary proposals. In North Dakota, we have NDPMA to serve as our voice. Nationally, we have Energy Marketers of America (formerly Petroleum Marketers of America).

We need YOU!!! We need your voice and your membership. Our membership dues are down almost $15,000 this year. Since we are not able to have any fundraising events, our PAC funds are substantially less. We did raise $4,000 in the PAC request. If you have not paid your dues or given to the PAC, I ask that you reconsider. I, myself, am guilty of not supporting the PAC. I planned on taking care of it later, then FORGOT. I am sending $250.00 and ask that you match it. A big Thank You to the members who have paid their dues and given to the PAC in these uncertain times. We are a great organization and will continue to be, because of you.

Legislation & Representation The primary purpose of any trade association is lobbying on behalf of its members. The association provides a unified voice – strengthened by its number of members. NDPMA is your “watchdog” in North Dakota and Washington, D.C., protecting you against legislation that could cost you thousands of dollars in lost revenue. We keep our members informed of legislative issues and, with their input, represent and promote the best interests of the industry. Energy Marketers of America Name Change Reflects Growing Portfolio of Liquid Fuels Industry The Energy Marketers of America (EMA) announced a new era for the trade association previously known as the Petroleum Marketers Association of America (PMAA). The name change is reflective of the group’s growing portfolio of affordable, efficient, and environmentally friendly liquid fuels and other alternative energy sources that are helping to reduce emissions while propelling Americans forward.

As an active member of NDPMA, you are also automatically affiliated with the Energy Marketers of America (EMA). EMA is your voice in Washington, D.C. NDPMA also maintains a close working relationship with the National Association of Convenience Stores (NACS). Quarterly Newsletter The North Dakota Petroleum Marketers Association publishes a quarterly newsletter to keep you informed of association activities, government regulations, money saving programs and ideas for your business. Legislative Update During the Legislative Session, the association has a weekly update of all bills that may affect marketers. Petroleum members input is solicited to determine the association’s position on legislative issues.

What is NDPMA? The North Dakota Petroleum Dealers and Jobbers were organized in the mid 1950’s by a group of petroleum marketers who realized there is strength in one collective voice. This small but enthusiastic group grew is size and influence. In 1989, this group of pioneers was reorganized and became known as the North Dakota Petroleum Marketers Association.

Today, NDPMA represents over 400 petroleum marketers and associate members. This list includes bulk oil jobbers, service station dealers, convenience stores and truck stops. The associate members play a vital role in providing marketers with the tools and resources needed to succeed in this ever-changing industry. A majority of NPDMA members are small business owners working to boost the state’s economy by providing over 10,000 jobs for area residents. The North Dakota Liquefied Petroleum Gas Association was established in March 16, 1950. There was an amendment to the articles of incorporation in November of 1989 to change the name to North Dakota Propane Gas Association. STATE Propane began being sold in North Dakota in 100 lb DIRECTOR cylinders. The first propane 30,000 plant opened in Fargo, ND in 1946. The companies of that time were Main Propane, Tex Gas and Pyrofax. The first 1,000 gallon propane tank was put in at a rural home in Menoken, ND in 1948. They called it a pig! It was a big round ball – not oblong like today. The employee needed a ladder to get to the top to fill it. It is still in service today.

After World War II, North Dakotans started to Ken Kraft purchase propane furnaces and water heaters. They Past Director (1998-2020) were railed in and the propane dealers could not keep up with the demand. They were almost a year behind on home installations. Starting in 1972, grain dryers were being installed around the state and fueled by propane.

NDPGA annual meeting and convention is held in June. After 70 years, the propane industry is still strong and united in North Dakota. Members from around the state attend to learn safety information and to keep up with the changes in the code. Jason Behm Current State Director
