MATH WORKSHEETS 4th Grade: Read and answer questions 1. If a starting pitcher throws about 90 pitches per game, and pitches in about 32 games per season, about how many pitches per year will the pitcher throw? How many pitches did our starting pitcher throw in the game today? If this is his average pitch count in 29 total games, how many will he throw? 2. Before 2019, Charlie Blackmon had played 920 games for the Rockies in 8 seasons. Todd Helton played 2247 games in 17 seasons, the most in Rockies history. If Charlie plays for the Rockies as long as Todd, how many games per season does he need to play to break Todd’s record? 3. In a recent game, Trevor Story got 2 hits in 4 at-bats and Ian Desmond got 1 hit in 2 at-bats. Write Story’s hits per at-bats and Desmond’s hits per at-bats as fractions and compare them using a <, =, or > sign. Draw a model of the fractions to justify your choice. 2020 MATH DAY MATH WORKSHEETS 4. If German Marquez pitches 2/3 of a 9-inning game and Scott Oberg pitches the rest, how many innings does Scott Oberg pitch? How would you write that as a fraction of a 9-inning game? Each team gets 27 outs in a 9-inning game. Can you see how many outs our starting pitcher got? 5. If Nolan Arenado gets 34 hits in his first 100 at-bats of the season, what would his batting average be? How many hits does Nolan have in the season so far? Can you show how to get his average? 2020 MATH DAY MATH WORKSHEETS 6.

MEDIA CLIPS – Nov. 28, 2018 Desmond eyes more production in 2019 Thomas Harding | MLB.com | Nov. 27th, 2018 DENVER -- Ian Desmond spent the 2018 season hanging onto the number that mattered -- the one in the Rockies' win column. Many of the other numbers weren't kind to him. After a difficult and injury-filled 2017 season, which began his five-year contract worth $70 million, Desmond was healthy enough for 160 games in '18. But he batted .236 and wasn't treated kindly by the Wins Above Replacement stat -- minus- 0.7, per FanGraphs, and minus-0.6, per Baseball-Reference. As a comparison, Desmond averaged 2.2 and 2.1 WAR, respectively, over his seven full seasons before signing with Colorado. But with consistent production absent, Desmond at times fulfilled the Rockies' contention that he is a winning player. His 22 home runs, 20 stolen bases, 82 runs and 88 RBIs in 2018 are stats many players would love, and the Rockies will tell you he had a knack for the right, heady play during the team's second-half run. Hey, it all made him one of baseball's most interesting figures on Twitter; many games began with vitriolic reaction to him being in the lineup, and more than a handful ended with an apology after a late home run. Often fans familiar with his community involvement and interaction jumped to his defense. "The one thing I can say, I feel like no matter what the situation was, no matter what the numbers said, I feel like I came out and tried to do something to help the team win," Desmond said while clearing out of Coors Field after the Rockies were eliminated from the National League Division Series by the Brewers.

Sullivan and Cody Pace / MLB.com | August 24th, 2016 + 58 COMMENTS CINCINNATI -- Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre's 2,900th Major League hit was a game-winner on a night Yu Darvish's first career homer stole the show. Beltre's two-out double in the eighth inning Wednesday drove home Ian Desmond with the go-ahead run, and the Rangers held on for a 6-5 victory over the Reds at Great American Park. "That was a great one to win," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "We needed a feel-good win going home. I'm not saying it was the greatest played game, but an incredible effort by all our guys." The Rangers snapped a three-game losing streak and now have a 6 1/2-game lead in the American League West with 35 to play. Despite the loss, the Reds finished 6-4 on their 10-game homestand. Desmond started the rally when he was hit by a pitch from right-handed reliever Blake Wood, and he stole second. Carlos Beltran flied out to center, but Beltre snapped an 0-for-10 skid with a double to right-center. Darvish hit his first Major League home run, but otherwise struggled in six innings.

  • Padding the Stats: a Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations
Padding the Stats: A Study of MLB Player Performance in Meaningless Game- Situations Evan Hsia1, Jaewon Lee2 and Anton T. Dahbura3 Department of Computer Science Johns Hopkins University Abstract This paper presents the concept of Meaningless Game-Situations (MGS) in Major League Baseball (MLB), defined as situations in which a team has a 95% chance or greater of winning the game given the score at that particular inning in the game. We determine the run differentials for each inning that yield a 95% chance or greater of winning the game based on 2013-2016 MLB statistics and look at individual batter performances under MGS. We argue that including a split for MGS in major baseball statistical references should be considered. I. Introduction Hope springs eternal, especially in the game of baseball. But should it? Perhaps the absence of a game clock in baseball, unlike other major sports, creates the illusion that anything is possible, and in particular that one’s team can overcome even the largest of deficits, even late in the game. And, indeed, significant comebacks from behind are possible, but are so unlikely that in some cases they’re considered to be historic. For instance, in the game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies on June 8, 1989 the Pirates scored 10 runs in the top of the first inning. The Pirates’ radio broadcaster, Jim Rooker, proclaimed that if the Phillies were to come back from the 10-run deficit he would “walk home”. MEDIA CLIPS –May 19, 2018 Desmond, Blackmon homer as Rox stifle SF Thomas Harding / MLB.com | May 18, 2018 SAN FRANCISCO -- On Friday night, Rockies first baseman Ian Desmond turned the clock back 12 days -- most of which were dark, offensively. Desmond launched a three-run homer in the fourth inning and an RBI double in the sixth, and Kyle Freeland went 6 2/3 innings for his fifth straight quality start, as the Rockies beat the Giants, 6-1, at AT&T Park. On May 6, Desmond homered twice during a 4-2 road victory over the Mets. From then until his first at-bat Friday -- a fielder's-choice grounder that led to Trevor Story being thrown out at the plate in the second -- Desmond was 3-for-34 with 13 strikeouts and two walks. With no true first-base alternative, all the booing and all the social posts couldn't excise him from manager Bud Black's lineup. But with two swings, Desmond helped the Rockies improve to 3-1 on this road trip. "It's something that we've seen, but not consistently from at-bat to at-bat, game to game," Black said. "But when he got hold of the fastball, his contact point was out front, resulted in a homer. The double, same thing." It was more than a guy shaking off a slump for a night. The Rockies pulled to a half-game behind the slumping D-backs, who fell for the eighth time in the last nine games Friday (3-1 to the Mets), but nonetheless lead a National League West that is waiting for a team to surge.
