Tall Tales with Ben Bailey

By Peter Lindblad

Ben Bailey has been on a wild ride with “Cash Cab,” and the meter is still running. The quirky game show gained the easygoing comedian a following and made Bailey an Emmy Award winning TV star, as well as an executive producer, but he almost missed out on the adventure of a lifetime. When he first heard about the concept, Bailey came close to completely dismissing it out of hand. “I thought it was ridiculous,” said Bailey, with a laugh. “So did everyone. It was like, ‘What? A TV show in a taxi?’ It just seemed like the dumbest idea.” So dumb, in fact, that Bailey considered blowing off going for the part of host. “I was in San Diego and my buddy was playing there with his band at the same time, and he was like, ‘We’ve got a house at the beach. Come hang. We’ve got it for a week,’” said Bailey. “And I was like, ‘I’ve got this audition for this stupid game show in a taxi.’ I almost bailed on it, but I didn’t. I got on the red eye, and I flew back and I went straight to the audition.” Of course, Bailey got it, and in the process, he became a licensed taxi driver, chauffeuring contestants to their destinations while asking them a series of increasingly difficult questions for

When it’s time to eat, your server will retrieve you from the bar and lead you through into the bright, open space of the dining room. Vaulted ceilings and light colored walls give the room an airy, spacious feel, and tables covered with vinyl tablecloths and paper placemats feel exactly right for a supper club. If you’ve arrived on a Wednesday or Friday, you’re up for one of the famous buffets. The Wednesday buffet changes each week (a weekly schedule can be found on the website), but the Friday buffet is always, of course, seafood. Delicious, delicious seafood. It includes fried fish (obviously), poorman’s lobster, crab meat, popcorn shrimp, and broasted chicken, in addition to various side dishes. On Saturdays and Sundays, you can order from the regular menu (also, a partial menu on Fridays). Saturday’s special is prime rib - check that off the supper club list - and Sunday’s is barbecued ribs. The regular menu has something for everyone. From sandwiches, to pastas, to steaks, to seafood, no one will leave hungry. And, all dinners (and buffets) include the soup and salad bar - that famous supper club staple. The wait staff, like the bartenders, make everyone feel right at home. And often, you’ll see the owner, Scott Schultz, walking through Three cool the dining room chatting with customers.
