Ines Kallweit answers your legal questions.

Q Is it true that if you die without a will the government gets your estate?

A The simple answer is “no.” There is an act of the Victorian Parliament which determines who are your next of kin. Your next of kin will receive your estate, should you die without a will. Only if you have no spouse, domestic partner or traceable blood relatives does the government take your estate. The best advice is to have a professionally drawn will. This will permit your estate to be handled as you would wish when you die.

For artist Robert Lee Davis, it’s all about connections.

So it’s no surprise that his work Mirage Rising was announced the People’s Choice Award winner of the ANL Maritime Art Prize and Exhibition on November 8. More people liked his work than any other during the popular Docklands-based exhibition which was on display during October. Mr Davis was fl attered and overwhelmed when award sponsor, Tony Cousins of PB Towage, announced his $3000 prize. It was especially pleasing for Mr Davis as he has only been in Australia since last December, having accepted an invitation to visit a friend for Christmas. Mr Davis had spent his previous 10 years in Shanghai, China and has also spent time in Egypt. He said his work symbolised the interconnectedness between humanity and the sea. “Th e striking thing about Australia is the openness of the culture and how people are made to feel welcome,” he said. “Internationally, Australians are known as the most hospitable people.” Robert Lee Davis is congratulated by Tony Cousins. “My work celebrates the journeys and obviously appealed to visitors of the annual In introducing the People’s Choice Award, He said the Docklands-based art prize was connections between people of all cultures.” art show at the Mission to Seafarers in mission vice-chairman Captain Nigel the biggest maritime art prize in Australia Mr Davis’s 28 x 76 cm work in magazine Flinders St, Docklands. Earlier this year, the diner, which is located on Footscray Rd just outside of Docklands, was at the centre of a dispute over potholes. Large potholes had developed in the diner’s extensive car park, which provides parking for up to 130 trucks. For the past fi ve years the Port of Melbourne has rented the land for the diner from VicTrack. But neither party was prepared to foot the bill for the costly repairs to the car park. Docklands proved to be the right fi t for the family of four. “To have an apartment right on the water was a unique experience in Melbourne,” Michele said. “Th ere are not a lot of places in Melbourne where you can live this close to the water.” Th e family lived in the Arkley tower for two years and has spent the following eight years in an apartment at the Nolan. Closeness to the water was one thing, but another drawcard for Michele and her family was the proximity to the city and the ease of lifestyle in Docklands. “I love the fact that absolutely everything is close by,” Michele said. Now working at Harbour Town, Michele said she loved having to travel no further than across the road on her daily commute. Bridgit’s drawings and watercolours provide a perspective on the superstructures of oil rigs and transporters as they glide through the bay without fanfare or fuss.

These superstructures dominate the landscape and fill up the sky and this exhibition is an attempt to make sense of their chaos, confusion and sheer size.

Whilst summer’s approach has brought along a number of contrasting things (mosquitoes, daytime cocktails and backyard cricket), it has also brought a myriad of style queries.

Australians are lauded for their easy-going approach to life and the same goes for their style philosophy. However, living in a city with a climate about as stable as an elephant on a tightrope, summer dressing needs to be a well-thought-out task. A cheat’s approach is the stock-standard denim cut-off shorts and an old pair of thongs.
