Dinner at El Establo restaurant Heredia – this location is at the centre of Costa Rica’s coffee producing area and is known as La Ciudad de las Flores (City of the Flowers). It was first settled by the Spanish in 1706 and is home to the National University. Braulio Carrillo - the Braulio Carrillo national park (32,000 hectares) contains five separate forest habitats, dominated by the wet tropical forest. Hundreds of varieties of orchids and ferns are here, along with many of the native bird species. Volcan Arenal - the most impressive of Costa Rica’s volcanoes, Arenal was thought extinct until a series of earthquakes in July 1968. It blew on July 29th, killing 78 people and causing damage over a wide area. Monteverde - the Monteverde Cloud Forest is one of the great nature reserves of Costa Rica and home to 400 species of birds, 490 species of butterfly, 2,500 species of plants and 100 species of mammals. 52 53 Cloud Forest Trail www.toyota-media.com Day two • Monteverde, Hotel El Establo – Punta Islita, Islita • 80 km on road, 70 km off road • 4 hours and 30 minutes drive - 06h00m. Dinner at the interior patio of the Marriott hotel • Open bar and live music Playa Naranjo, Nicoya Gulf - one of the remote beaches in the Santa Rosa National Park. White sand and clear water make for excellent surfing, especially near Witch’s Rock. The Nicoya Gulf contains some 45 islands including the Isla San Lucas, Costa Rica’s prison island – closed in 1991. Puntarenas - the sheltered waters around Puntarenas create a natural harbour but the once bustling port has now been superseded by nearby Puerto Caldera. Today, fishing is the main industry. The beach along the gulf is spectacular, especially when viewed in a setting sun. San José - the capital city of Costa Rica is a modern city with a particular colonial charm. The booming coffee trade of the late 19th century brought great wealth and sophistication. The Plaza de la Cultura marks the heart of the city and is home to the elegant Teatro Nacional, modelled after the Paris Opera House. Other tourist highlights include the National Museum and the Gold Museum. ABSTRACT An inventory of the understory and canopy of 4 ha of lower montane cloud forest at Monteverde, Costa Rica, yielded 190 bryophyte species: 133 hepatics, 56 mosses and 1 hornwort. Thick branches of the lower canopy were by far the richest habitat in terms of number of species (99), trunks from 1 m upwards had 65 species, lianas, shrubs, saplings, or living leaves in the understory had about 36-46 species each, and 16 species were found on rotten logs. The figures are illustrative of the great diversification of microhabitats of bryophytes in a tropical montane cloud forest. About 36% of the species, including more than half of the corticolous ones, occurred exclusively in the canopy. It appeared that the percentage ofbryophyte species restricted to the canopy may be the same in lowland and montane rain forests, in spite of the great differences in species abundance and composition in the two kinds of forest. Meal Plan: Dinner, if required. Day 2 San Jose: Poas Volcano & National Museum First thing this morning (weather tends to be clearer at this time of day) we'll leave the city and head up to Poas Volcano, one of Costa Rica’s most popular active volcanoes to visit.* Standing at almost 2700m/8,900 ft above sea level, Volcan Poas National Park is actually home to two craters. The bigger of the two craters measures 1.5 kilometers in diameter (0.9 miles) and is 300 meters deep (900 feet). At the bottom of this hole, there is a medium sized blue-green lagoon that emits boiling sulphurous gases. The other crater is called Botos Lagoon which contains cold water. While Poas Volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in Costa Rica, don’t expect to see lava flow (the last major eruption was in 1910). However, you are likely to see steam and gases coming from the crater; occasional geyser-like eruptions have reached up to 820 ft. The main crater is easily accessed from a paved path/road which is about ½ mile from the visitors' center. We then return to the city where we'll visit the National Museum, a perfect introduction to the country's culture, biodiversity, archeology, and history all in one place. It includes a butterfly habitat, numerous ancient rock spheres (the "Easter Island heads of Costa Rica"), and colonial weapons, all housed in a fortified colonial building.

Brodey and Todd Ramón Ochoa) This dissertation is a critical analysis and annotated translation, from Spanish into English, of the book Reglas de Congo: Palo Monte Mayombe, by the Cuban anthropologist, artist, and writer Lydia Cabrera (1899-1991). Cabrera’s text is a hybrid ethnographic book of religion, slave narratives (oral history), and folklore (songs, poetry) that she devoted to a group of Afro-Cubans known as “los Congos de Cuba,” descendants of the Africans who were brought to the Caribbean island of Cuba during the trans-Atlantic Ocean African slave trade from the former Kongo Kingdom, which occupied the present-day southwestern part of Congo-Kinshasa, Congo-Brazzaville, Cabinda, and northern Angola. The Kongo Kingdom had formal contact with Christianity through the Kingdom of Portugal as early as the 1490s.
