Whether we work in film, television, publishing, music, or photography, we and our colleagues have all been affected by the rampant, illicit activity that occurs on the major internet platforms, including Google and Facebook. There has been growing concern in Washington, in the press, and among Americans about the lack of responsibility exercised by the major internet platforms toward harmful and illegal activity taking place on their services. For decades, online gatekeepers like Facebook and Google have turned a blind eye to the proliferation of widespread societal harms on their platforms. From sex trafficking to foreign influence over our elections, from privacy to piracy, it has become increasingly clear that more needs to be done to ensure platform responsibility. In recent hearings in both the House and the Senate, Facebook’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, characterized Silicon Valley’s failure to take an appropriately broad view of its responsibility as a “big mistake.” But whether the lack of responsibility was a “mistake” or something else, the failure of Facebook, Google, and others to take responsibility is rooted in decades-old government policies, including legal immunities and safe harbors, that treat these companies differently than other industries and actually absolve internet platforms of responsibility.

TOM WILLIAMS, C.A.S. Production Sound Mixer Member, IATSE 695, 481 Tom Williams started his career by attending the Berklee College of Music as a Production Engineering Major and working in studios around Boston with elements as diverse as rock bands to orchestras. From studio work, Tom moved into documentaries, which took him around the world shooting for the BBC, NOVA, American Experience and Discovery. The doc world led to narrative work and then into the feature world, where he has worked on many high profile projects. The years spent on documentaries left Tom with the ability to think creatively on the fly, which is always helpful on set. That ability, as well as state of the art equipment, a collaborative attitude and positive personality make Tom easy to work with. He loves what he does and strives to be “invisible” while working, always looking ahead and thinking around potential problems before they can arise. Based just outside of Boston, Tom is available to work anywhere and carries both a US and EU passport. Chris Benstead COMPOSER Chris Benstead is a British film composer, arranger and Academy-Award winning re-recording mixer. He has worked on several projects with director Guy Ritchie including composing the score for The Gentlemen, starring Matthew McConaughey and Michelle Dockery and the upcoming action thriller Wrath of Man. He also arranged and composed additional music for Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin alongside legendary songwriter and composer Alan Menken and produced and arranged the songs in the film, working with Will Smith to create re-imagined versions of the classic Disney songs. Chris composed additional music for Beauty and The Beast working closely with Alan Menken and director Bill Condon. His arrangements helped contribute to the film’s massive success - becoming the biggest grossing musical of all time. Chris received OSCAR and BAFTA awards for his work as re-recording mixer on Alfonso Cuaron’s masterpiece Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. Chris’ unique skillset allowed him to mix and sculpt the music in an extremely immersive way, pushing the limits of surround sound and exploiting the new ‘Dolby Atmos’ standard. As an in-demand music editor Chris has worked on over 40 films including the latest James Bond film No Time to Die, Wonder Woman, Black Swan, Brave, Thor and Cinderella and has worked with some of the most high-profile directors in the industry including Paul Greengrass and Sir Kenneth Branagh. Chris is a versatile multi-instrumentalist and achieved a First-Class honours in music and sound recording from the University of Surrey. He was also named as Alumni of the year for his ground-breaking achievement in music mixing on ‘Gravity’.
