MANNA FROM HEAVEN NEWS 1 ELEVATION BAPTIST CHURCH - 4729 NEW BERN AVENUE - RALEIGH, NC 27610 From the Pastor’s Pen Here at Elevati on, evangelism is the constant message. Last year, God allowed us to evangelize in so many ways. We were also able to contribute to several community organizati ons to provide fi nancial resources to enable them to carry out their missions. During June, some of the ministerial associates were able to take the Gospel to the streets of Exuma, Bahamas where many souls were saved. A couple of months ago, Elevati on provided 2,638 gallons of free gas to Triangle residents. In additi on, last November, I was blessed to visit the Holy Land and walked the streets that Jesus traveled. Oh, what an experience! God conti nues to show Himself mighti ly and we sti ll believe in His sovereignty. Don’t be distracted by the things of this world BUT stay focused on God and His plan for your life. Despite, the recession and tough economic ti mes, God’s children will sti ll stand e greet you in the matchless name of Jesus Christ victorious. Let us rest in that fact! He tells us in Wand we thank God for you! 2009 was an amazing His word that as His children, we will not lack for any year where minds were transformed and hearts renewed. good thing “I have been young, and now am old; The mission here at Elevati on sti ll remains the same yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his – Evangelism. 2 MANNA FROM HEAVEN NEWS n 2009 the Holy Spirit allowed Pastor ICarmichael and other members of A Church with a Mission Elevati on to undertake their fi rst mission trip to Exuma, Bahamas. Many souls were saved and lives changed as they walked the streets evangelizing. Acts 1:8, But you Exuma, Bahamas will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witness in Jerusalem, and all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Pastor Carmichael was the guest preacher for a three night at Zion Bapti st Church in Exuma where Randy Musgrove is the Pastor. Parishioners were grateful that God used Elevati on’s Pastor as a vessel to bring the Holy Spirit back to Exuma for the fi rst ti me in over 50 years. Recently Pastor Carmichael and Youth Director, Joshua Carmichael joined other clergy as they journeyed to Jerusalem. Being directed by the Holy Spirit, Pastor was able to travel and experience breath- taking sights, like viewing the Dead Sea and even walking the streets where Jesus traveled. What an awesome experience to see the scriptures come to life. One of his most fond memories was The Holy Land when he and his son Joshua were given the opportunity to bapti ze each other in the Jordan River, modeling the example where Jesus was bapti zed by John. What God has imparted in the hearts of Pastor and the clergy while in Jerusalem will be cherished for a long ti me as He uses this experience to conti nue His work in them.

According to Acts 6:6, These they presented to the apostles, who aft er prayer laid their hands on them. Assistant Pastor Elder Rebecca Carmichael led the deacons in their charge. She referenced 1 Timothy 3:3-8, noti ng the deacon’s assignments are given from God and they are equipped to carry out these God-given assignments. Therefore, with the additi on of eight new deacons, EBC can expect unity, the Word of God to spread; and the number of disciples to multi ply and God to be glorifi ed!

A Brand New Mind At the start of 2009, we set our sights on a Transformed Mind. Month aft er month, we learned about the importance of not conforming to this world, but being transformed by the renewing of our minds, that we may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. (Romans 12:2). Through sermons, conferences, Bible studies, and retreats, Trustees’ Ordination God’s word opened our eyes to the possibiliti es of “Let a man so consider us, as servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries true transformati on. of God. Moreover it is required in stewards that one be found .” 1 Corinthians 4:1-2 And now we must each ask ourselves: What am I going On Sunday, September 13, Elevati on installed four new Trustees: to do with my brand new Jerome Woodberry (Misa); Alonzo Thomas (Jackie); Jeff ery Stover (Rhonda), mind? and Colins Hines. Will you fi nd new ways to use your spiritual gift s to advance God’s Kingdom? A new mind brings a new atti tude, a new outlook on life, and a new longing to understand what is good and acceptable, and the perfect, will of God. A transformed mind is a terrible thing to waste. Put your brand new mind to work today.

6 MANNA FROM HEAVEN NEWS The Vision In Clearer Focus he Vision shall come to pass, and this was very evident Ton April 12th, Easter Sunday when Elevati on Bapti st Church members and guests corporately assembled at the Progress Energy’s Meymandi Concert Hall. With every fi lled seat, every clap of the hands, and every lyric lift ed, members and guests could see the Vision becoming more of a reality. Since the Trinity Services began in 2007, this was the fi rst ti me att endees of all three services worshipped together at one ti me. Pastor Carmichael preached “Now That You Know, What Are You Going To Do?” taken from Matt hew 28:5-9. The preached word was preceded by a Musical writt en, and directed by EBC member, Harold Phillips, and performed by the EBC Music and Fine Arts Ministry. The 16th scene Musical, “They Didn’t Know,” opened with vibrant colorful costumes, ornate body movements, and profound illustrati ons of emoti on through dance, which personify Jesus’ predesti ned journey to the cross. Throughout the musical Phillips highlighted examples of some of Christ’s miracles. The most poignant and strong moments of the musical were the scenes among the Pharisees, confl icted with inquisiti on, and doubt about Jesus, and His impact on the people. True to any musical the songs selected illustrated passion, and depth of emoti on. For example, when Jesus’ walk on earth draws nearer to the cross Jesus, and his mother, Mary, sing a duet, “We Exist To Give You Praise.” Heightening the seriousness of the moment. Likewise, the musicals joyous fi nale is refl ected through the casts singing, “This Shall Come To Pass” & “He Got Up.”

Just because you are, a man of God does not mean you cannot celebrate when Kobe drops fi ft y points or if the Steelers make a last minute catch to win the Super Bowl. Even those men who think Lebron James is the best third baseman in the NFL can appreciate the camaraderie that a sporti ng event or game can produce. The Men’s Ministry of EBC has used that appreciati on to bring men of God closer together. The Men’s Ministry strives to build brotherly relati onships through word study and other acti viti es. In additi on to the monthly word studies, the ministry has sponsored several fun events: • In February, they watched the Pitt sburgh Steelers pull a last minute victory to defeat the Arizona Cardinals. • In April, they witnessed the shellacking the University of North Carolina put on Michigan State University to win the NCAA Championship. • In May, they took it to Buff alo Lanes for the Men’s Bowling Fellowship. • In July, they played two on two basketball and games like chess and checkers. All who att ended had a great ti me and the men’s bond became that much stronger.

Most of the Men’s Ministry events are held on the 2nd Friday of the month and primarily held at the church, but the locati on might be off -site. If you would like to join the acti viti es every man from EBC and the community is welcome to parti cipate. All men of Elevati on are considered a part of the ministry. You are encouraged to be acti ve. The Men’s Ministry understands the powerful bond that men, who are willing to serve God, can create amongst themselves. Once that happens, God’s mandate of what a man should be, will be fulfi lled. MANNA FROM HEAVEN NEWS 13 Heart Disease – It’s a Year-Round Issue On Sunday, February 8, 2009 many were adorned in red dresses, ti es and other atti re to acknowledge the prevalence of heart disease, especially in women. Although Elevati on members and guests paused for Red Dress Sunday to heighten the awareness of this disease, they were also reminded that it’s a year-round issue. Heart disease has long been the nati on’s No. 1 killer, crossing all classes and races of people. However, there is proof that we do have some control over this pervasive health issue. Seventy percent (70%) of all chronic disease states are related to lifestyle; geneti cs and environment also play a part. Ulti mately, it comes down to being physically acti ve and eati ng right (proper porti ons and less sugary drinks). Knowing your numbers is the key! Do you know your blood pressure reading, cholesterol, blood glucose, etc.? You should keep a log of this informati on and refer to it from year to year to assess your health changes.

Refer to the chart below for markers of good health:

One of the most prevalent diseases is high blood pressure (hypertension), oft en referred to as the “silent killer.” Those who are diagnosed, signifi cantly increase their risks for heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and death. Waist circumference is another indicator of heart disease. A measurement greater than 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women means your risk of heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure is high. Knowing your Body Mass Index (BMI) is also good. It too, is another indicator of your health risks and has a direct link to chronic illnesses. So, what do you do? It’s imperati ve to eat bett er (more fruits and vegetables, more fi ber, less fat and fewer calories) and exercise more (at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic acti vity, like walking, fi ve days a week; or 20 minutes of vigorous acti vity, like jogging, three days a week). Safe measures to weight loss, not trendy diets, are an essenti al element to improving your health status and impacts your numbers.

14 MANNA FROM HEAVEN NEWS Here are some additi onal ways to improve your health: Quit smoking. Smokers have more than twice the risk for heart att ack as nonsmokers. Smoking is also the most preventable risk factor. If you smoke, quit. Bett er yet, never start smoking at all. Nonsmokers who are exposed to constant smoke also have an increased risk. Improve cholesterol levels. The risk for heart disease increases as your total amount of cholesterol increases. Your total cholesterol goal should be less than 200 mg/dl; HDL, the good cholesterol, higher than 40 mg/dl in men and 50 mg/dl in women (and the higher the bett er); and LDL should be less than 130 mg/dl in healthy adults. For those with diabetes or multi ple risk factors for heart disease, LDL goal should be less than 100 mg/dl (some experts recommend less than 70 mg/dl if you are very high risk). Interpretati on and treatment of cholesterol values must be individualized, taking into account all of your risk factors for heart disease. A diet low in cholesterol and saturated and trans fat will help lower cholesterol levels and reduce your risk for heart disease. Regular exercise will also help lower “bad” cholesterol and raise “good” cholesterol. Medicati ons are oft en needed to reach cholesterol goals.

Control high blood pressure. Control blood pressure through diet, exercise, weight management, and if needed, medicati ons. Control diabetes. If not properly controlled, diabetes can lead to signifi cant heart damage including heart att acks and death. Control diabetes through a healthy diet, exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and taking medicati ons as prescribed by your doctor. Get Acti ve. Many of us lead sedentary lives, exercising infrequently or not at all. People who don’t exercise have higher rates of death and heart disease compared to people who perform even mild to moderate amounts of physical acti vity. Even leisure-ti me acti viti es like gardening or walking can lower your risk of heart disease. Most people should exercise 30 minutes a day, at moderate intensity, on most days. Aerobic acti viti es include brisk walking, cycling, swimming, jumping rope, and jogging. If walking is your exercise of choice, use the pedo- meter goal of 10,000 steps a day. Consult your doctor before starti ng any exercise program.

Eat right. Eat a heart-healthy diet low in salt, saturated fat, trans fat, cholesterol, and refi ned sugars. Try to increase your intake of foods rich in vitamins and other nutrients, especially anti oxidants, which have been proven to lower your risk for heart disease. Also eat plant-based foods such as fruits and vegetables, nuts, and whole grains. Achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Excess weight puts signifi cant strain on your heart and worsens several other heart disease risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol and triglycerides. Research is showing that obesity itself increases heart disease risk. By eati ng right and exercising, you can lose weight and reduce your risk of heart disease. Manage Stress. Poorly controlled stress and anger can lead to heart att acks and strokes. Use stress and anger management techniques to lower your risk. Learn to manage stress by practi cing relaxati on techniques, learning how to manage your ti me, setti ng realisti c goals, and trying new techniques.

You are not alone – there are plenty resources to assist with medical informati on and services. The Elevati on Health Ministry is lead by a physician and includes several members who work in allied health fi elds, and will make themselves available to answer additi onal questi ons you might have. Watch for the monthly health-related arti cles in the church bulleti n and handouts placed in the vesti bule, respecti ve to monthly nati onal observances. MANNA FROM HEAVEN NEWS 17 2009 Women’s Weekend – A Transformed Mind

On September 18 and 19 Elevati on Bapti st Church held its sixth annual women’s retreat at The Founder’s Inn and Spa in Virginia Beach, Virginia. This year marked the fi rst ti me the event was held in Virginia. The theme of this year’s retreat was “A Transformed Mind,” which has been the focus of the church throughout 2009.

Featured speakers for the retreat were Dr. Natalie Francisco, co-pastor and minister of music at Calvary Community Church in Hampton, Virginia; Evangelist Iris Perkins from Shalom Bapti st Church in Newport News, Virginia, and Minister Sylvia Harris from First Bapti st Church Denbigh in Newport News, Virginia. Dr. Francisco, explored the connecti on between self-esteem and self-image, “Thinking right in God’s Sight.” She emphasized the importance of seeing ourselves the way God sees us. “What I think will determine who and what I am, and what I att ract in my life.” Self esteem is based on atti tude, which includes: self value, occupati on, achievements, others percepti ons of us, our purpose (Jeremiah 29:11), place in the world, potenti al for success, strength and weakness, social status, and independence. Evangelist Perkins began her message with a song, “I Need You”, followed by a powerful message on “Its a Mind Thing” taken from Romans 12:1, giving reference to the physical, emoti onal, and spiritual aspects. She told att endees that it was ti me to make a change. Posing questi ons, “who are we trying to please?” God or Man? She expressed the seriousness of how God is moving His people to the next level, and how we should not be content with where we are now. Referencing Matt hew 6:23, Perkins talked about WORSHIP - she said, “Worship” is a lifestyle....worship is something a Christi an should do just because they love to praise God.

Minister Harris taught retreat att endees, “A transformed mind produces a consecrated lifestyle that brings glory to God.” Consecrati on, Minister Harris said, means being set apart, sancti fi ed and dedicated to God.“It is the challenge to take the atti tude that everything we are, have, or want to be is in the Lord’s hand,” she said. The women were reminded to never be too busy to pray and study God’s Word. The retreat off ered various workshops enti tled: Holy Spirit, fi nances, healthy relati onships and deliverance from strongholds.

On Sunday, September 20 Elevati on’s Women’s Day guest speaker Bishop Corlett a Vaughn, Senior Pastor of The Holy Spirit Cathedral of Faith in Detroit, Michigan gave powerful teachings for all three services. She shared the importance of serving God with your mind, “A Faith that Regulates Your Mind” referencing Romans 10:8. If you have no belief you have no faith and without faith your percepti on waivers. Att endees were reminded of the importance of spending ti me with the Holy Spirit.

Assistant Pastor Elder Rebecca Carmichael expressed her grati tude to all the women of Elevati on for their hard work and dedicati on to the Women’s Ministry.

Elevati on Bapti st Church Women’s Ministry under the directi on of Elder Rebecca Carmichael kicked off Girlfriends in January 2009. Girlfriends was created as a vehicle that would meet the social and emoti onal needs of the women at Elevati on and those in the surrounding communiti es. Events were designed to address the total package: the mind, the body and the soul. The team of dynamic women launched Girlfriends with Movie Nite on Friday, January 9th. Nearly 200 women att ended and witnessed the transformati on of Elevati on’s lower annex into a movie theater setti ng, courtesy of Elevati on’s A/V servant leader, Ray Reid. Women were inspired as they watched “The Note” a Hallmark original movie starring Genie Francis “The Note” showed how dramati cally life can change in an instant and how it takes mere moments to make a connecti on: to reach out to someone you care about, to off er words of reconciliati on, to express love, regret or admirati on. The second event occurred on Friday, March 20th with Cuisine Nite featuring special guest Gail Dawn a local personal chef and owner of “Gail’s at Your Place.” Gail has been cooking since she was 12 years old and loves to cook various types of ethnic foods as well as healthy vegetarian, the rich and creamy Italian to the hearty and fl avorful Soul Food. The night began with door prizes and an icebreaker; att endees had three minutes to unscramble words related to cuisine. Over one hundred women enjoyed Chef Gail’s oven cooked BBQ chicken, sweet potato fries, collard greens, and lemon-rosemary cake. She shared her healthy recipes and suggesti ons on how to shop nutriti ously and prepare meals with healthier alternati ves in mind. The third event was held on Friday, May 8th with Bowling Nite at Pleasant Valley Lanes in Raleigh, where 16 teams (over 70 women) bowled and had a wonderful start to the Mother’s Day weekend. When the night was done, the top three bowlers were announced: Helen Carter scoring 190, Tasha Jones scoring 164 and Lati dra Heyward with 142. Bowlers were excited to experience such a fun-fi lled night and enjoyed the fellowship among their sisters-in-Christ. The fourth event was held on Friday, July 10th featuring Spa Nite. The women spoke for weeks of this event. The evening included pampering and spiritual meditati on that massaged each woman’s spirit. Several Mary Kay Consultants provided Hand Massages, instructi on on skin care and a special treat to-go; Mrs. Donna Batt le led the group in meditati onal moments, massage therapists from First Choice Healthcare provided chair massages, along with students from the Medical Arts School, all of Raleigh. The women were guided through a series of stati ons to receive services, and were given a take-home snack upon completi on of the circuit treatment. The fi nal event of the year was held on Friday, November 13th with Game Nite. What a fi nale! The women closed out the Girlfriends series with a scavenger hunt and other games adapted from BINGO, renamed FAVOR and Family Feud, renamed Sister Challenge. Prizes were awarded. On another note, every other month the Women’s Ministry held its regular Word Study. The sessions were facilitated by Minister LaQuisha Parks, who taught from the book, “The Holy Spirit: Acti vati ng God’s Power in Your Life” by Billy Graham. Minister Parks covered the fundamental principles in understanding the work of the Holy Spirit and broaden parti cipant’s understanding of the integral relati onship between the Trinity. The December session provided a forum for women to share a brief testi mony about their increased relati onship and walk with Christ. Elder Carmichael thanked all the ladies for their parti cipati on with the Women’s Ministry. MANNA FROM HEAVEN NEWS 19 2009 EBC Scholarships Recipients, Graduates, Honor Roll and Dean’s List
