Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. Peter, however, raised him up, saying, What heights of love, what depths of peace When fears are slled, when strivings cease “Get up. I myself am also a human being.” My Comforter, my All in All Then Peter proceeded to speak and said, Here in the love of Christ I stand. “In truth, I see that God shows no parality. Rather, in every naon whoever fears him and acts uprightly In Christ alone! R who took on flesh, is acceptable to him.” Fullness of God in helpless babe. While Peter was sll speaking these things, This gi of love and righteousness, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who were listening to the word. 1 No Fear…In Jesus! 2 Timothy 1:1-7 Turn to the back of the book to get the feel and the context for 2 Timothy. Paul concludes his letter by writing these words: “For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing. Be diligent to come to me quickly; for Demas has forsaken me, having loved this present world, and has departed for Thessalonica—Crescens for Galatia, Titus for Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful to me for ministry. And Tychicus I have sent to Ephesus. Bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas when you come—and the books, especially the parchments. Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm. May the Lord repay him according to his works. You also must beware of him, for he has greatly resisted our words. At my first defense no one stood with me, but all forsook me. May it not be charged against them. But the Lord stood with me and strengthened me, so that the message might be preached fully through me, and that all the Gentiles might hear. Also I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

  • “In Season Or Out” 2 Timothy 4:1-5 Rev
“In Season or Out” 2 Timothy 4:1-5 Rev. Clinton G. Roberts--First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest--January 31, 2021 If you had only one remaining opportunity to offer counsel and encouragement to someone dear to you, someone you’ve tried to guide and mentor over the years—what would you choose to say? Our text from 2 Timothy presents us with just such a moment, between Paul and his protégé Timotheus, whose name means, “God-honoring.” In this epistle, which may contain the very last written words from the apostle, we find Paul in Rome, where he has been under house arrest for probably a couple of years. He was in Rome because, as a Roman citizen, he was entitled to be tried before Caesar, which he had asked Festus, the magistrate in Caesarea, to allow. While awaiting trial, many of his friends and companions were able to visit him, including Demas and Crescens and Linus and Claudia and others from the Christian house churches in Rome. But now things had gotten worse. At his first defense before the Imperial magistrate, Paul had to go it alone. He was spared from being put to a horrible death in the Coliseum by lions, perhaps because he was in fact a citizen, a privileged status within the Roman Empire in the 1st Century. But now we find Paul in chains, probably within the sprawling encampment of the Praetorian Guard, just outside the City. Only Luke the Physician remains at his side. The season is probably late summer, and the time? Sometime after the Great Fire in AD 64 and the death of Nero in AD 68.

  • The Macy Family
THE MACY FAMILY The original family name was probably Macie and may be traced to Normandy in France. When the family came to England is uncertain. Our Macy Family comes from Chilmark in Wiltshire County, England. The first of the name to come to America was Thomas Macy. He was a leader in the Purchase of Nantucket and the first permanent English settler on the Island. Thomas and Sarah Macy's daughter, Mary Macy, married William Bunker and thus became a part of our Canaday Lineage. The Macy family long remained in the Quaker faith. Rowland H. Macy, founder of the New York department store and of this line was a Quaker still at that time. I will begin this history with Thomas Macy. I need only go two generations to tie into our line, but Starbuck's book contains several more generations for those that are interested. THOMAS MACY Thomas Macy was born in Wiltshire County, England in the town of Chilmark. He came to America and settled in Newbury, Massachusetts, where he was made a freeman on September 6, 1639. In a very short while, he moved with a few others and was one of the original settlers of Salisbury, Massachusetts a few miles north of Newbury. In 1643, he was appointed one of the first seven selectmen of the new town. It was about this time that he married Sarah Hopcott. Sarah was also born in England, but I do not know where. Their first child was born in 1644, so I would place the marriage in about 1642 or 1643, and it would have been most likely in Salisbury.

  • Hannah, Eunice & Lois: the Value of a Godly Heritage
1 HANNAH, EUNICE & LOIS: THE VALUE OF A GODLY HERITAGE 1 SAMUEL 1, 2:18-21; 2 TIMOTHY 1:5 Passing along a godly heritage to our kids or grandkids means, among other things, taking advantage of teachable moments. Like the time two-year-old, Kylee, was visiting her grandparents. She was sitting at the kitchen table eating her lunch. Her grandmother joined her, closed her eyes, and bowed her head to say a silent prayer for her food. Little Kylee watched inquisitively. As her grandmother raised her head and opened her eyes, Kylee asked, “Nana, did you have a nice nap?” A teachable moment, yes? Passing along a godly heritage involves taking advantage of thousands of moments just like that one to send a consistent message to those who follow us generationally. There is a God. He matters so very much. He loves us. And we can have a relationship with Him through His Son, Jesus. Let’s think today about the value of a godly heritage. Having one ourselves. Passing one on to our kids and grandkids. We’re considering the Bible’s one hit wonders! It’s full of so many different people. Some are major characters: Abraham, Moses, David, Peter, Paul, and above all, Jesus. But most of them are minor, obscure characters. Despite their obscurity, they have something to teach us about God, about life, and about what it means to follow Jesus. Today, I want to focus on three women: Hannah, Eunice, and Lois. They remind us of the great value of a godly heritage passed down from parents to children.

  • Eunice, a Mom with Faith Acts 16:1–5 / 2 Timothy 1:5; 3:14–15
CORNERSTONE BIBLE CHURCH December 16, 2012 BEHIND THE SCENES: Eunice, A Mom with Faith Acts 16:1–5 / 2 Timothy 1:5; 3:14–15 Introduction: The Power of Parents . As I am sure you did, I hugged my children a little tighter this weekend than I did at the beginning of the week. As the news began to trickle in on Friday morning, I couldn’t wait to pick them up from school that afternoon. I wanted to see them and talk to them. If you are a parent, I am sure you felt similar feelings. There is no doubt in my mind that a tragedy like this will turn the attention of many parents towards their children. Unfortunately, I fear it might be only a season of time that the hugs are tighter; that the kisses are more precious; that the time is more valuable; and that the influence is intentional. Unfortunately, many parents will forget about his event within a few months. Don’t get me wrong; we will all still remember where we were when we found out about this horrendous act of violence. But I simply wonder if parents will continue to live with their children six months from now like they are this weekend. I wonder if parents will recognize that they are the ones that indelibly shape the heart of their children. It is their influence that will light up their day or darken their night. It is the way they talk to them, what they teach them, and how they shepherd them that will largely shape the adult they become.

  • Tribute Today to Veronica As a Friend, and Member of the Methodist Church of New Zealand Te Haahi Weteriana O Aoteoaroa
Veronica Madeleine Lowe [nee Roughan] I pay tribute today to Veronica as a friend, and member of the Methodist Church of New Zealand Te Haahi Weteriana o Aoteoaroa. If Veronica had been around in the time of Christ or in the years following Christ’s death I would have numbered her among the women disciples; some named like Martha and the Mary’s, Dorcas, Eunice, Lois, Lydia and Priscilla, others never named. Women of strength, intelligence and independence; women all touched by the hand of God, full of faith, determination and courage that helped them overcome adversity. If it had been Veronica’s lot to be around during the middle ages, I would have numbered her among the women mystics who wrote and spoke with insight and challenged the male hierarchy of the church. Women like Julian of Norwich who following a period of illness that all but took her life at the age of thirty, was able to write... “…for as the body is clad in clothing, and the flesh in the skin, and the bones in the flesh, and the heart in the whole, so are we souls and body clad in the goodness of God and enclosed in it.” Or maybe if she had been around in the 1880’s she would have been a staunch follower of Kate Shepherd? The qualities that marked these women of history are the qualities I valued in Veronica ~ knowledge, commitment, loyalty, determination, tenacity, and passion for a cause ~ qualities she brought into her life with the church, not just locally, but at Synod and national level; and, when it came to the life of the Methodist Women’s Fellowship these attributes extended to an international level.
