    “In Season or Out” 2 Timothy 4:1-5 Rev. Clinton G. Roberts--First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest--January 31, 2021 If you had only one remaining opportunity to offer counsel and encouragement to someone dear to you, someone you’ve tried to guide and mentor over the years—what would you choose to say? Our text from 2 Timothy presents us with just such a moment, between Paul and his protégé Timotheus, whose name means, “God-honoring.” In this epistle, which may contain the very last written words from the apostle, we find Paul in Rome, where he has been under house arrest for probably a couple of years. He was in Rome because, as a Roman citizen, he was entitled to be tried before Caesar, which he had asked Festus, the magistrate in Caesarea, to allow. While awaiting trial, many of his friends and companions were able to visit him, including Demas and Crescens and Linus and Claudia and others from the Christian house churches in Rome. But now things had gotten worse. At his first defense before the Imperial magistrate, Paul had to go it alone. He was spared from being put to a horrible death in the Coliseum by lions, perhaps because he was in fact a citizen, a privileged status within the Roman Empire in the 1st Century. But now we find Paul in chains, probably within the sprawling encampment of the Praetorian Guard, just outside the City. Only Luke the Physician remains at his side. The season is probably late summer, and the time? Sometime after the Great Fire in AD 64 and the death of Nero in AD 68.

This Thesis for the Master of Environmental Studies Degree by Carole Anne Holley has been approved for The Evergreen State College by ________________________ Edward Whitesell Member of the Faculty ________________________ Date ABSTRACT “Environmental Justice” for Indigenous Peoples: A Case Study of the Louden Tribal Council Carole Anne Holley This thesis is a critical study of how “environmental justice” has been used as a framework for federal relations with tribal governments in the United States. The thesis specifically compares (a) the federal government’s trust and treaty obligations along with concomitant laws and regulations; (b) tribal perspectives and expectations regarding such practices; and (c) a wider set of literature about the impacts of federal environmental regulation on tribes, especially in Alaska. This thesis argues that environmental justice is a faulty tool for tribes that can have adverse environmental, social, and political impacts, because environmental justice laws and policies frame Native Americans as racial minorities, instead of approaching environmental issues through the unique relationship that has been historically established between the federal and tribal governments. The Louden Tribe (federally-recognized as the Louden Tribal Council) of Alaska was used as a case study. The tribe has faced contamination of subsistence resources and loss of land rights. Louden Tribal Council members perceive that the Department of Defense (DoD) is responsible for much of the contamination.

    tHe ABU oMAr CAse And “eXtrAordinAry rendition” Caterina Mazza Abstract: In 2003 Hassan Mustafa Osama Nasr (known as Abu Omar), an Egyptian national with a recognised refugee status in Italy, was been illegally arrested by CIA agents operating on Italian territory. After the abduction he was been transferred to Egypt where he was in- terrogated and tortured for more than one year. The story of the Milan Imam is one of the several cases of “extraordinary renditions” imple- mented by the CIA in cooperation with both European and Middle- Eastern states in order to overwhelm the al-Qaeda organisation. This article analyses the particular vicissitude of Abu Omar, considered as a case study, and to face different issues linked to the more general phe- nomenon of extra-legal renditions thought as a fundamental element of US counter-terrorism strategies. Keywords: extra-legal detention, covert action, torture, counter- terrorism, CIA Introduction The story of Abu Omar is one of many cases which the Com- mission of Inquiry – headed by Dick Marty (a senator within the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe) – has investi- gated in relation to the “extraordinary rendition” programme im- plemented by the CIA as a counter-measure against the al-Qaeda organisation. The programme consists of secret and illegal arrests made by the police or by intelligence agents of both European and Middle-Eastern countries that cooperate with the US handing over individuals suspected of being involved in terrorist activities to the CIA. After their “arrest,” suspects are sent to states in which the use of torture is common such as Egypt, Morocco, Syria, Jor- dan, Uzbekistan, Somalia, Ethiopia.1 The practice of rendition, in- tensified over the course of just a few years, is one of the decisive and determining elements of the counter-terrorism strategy planned 134 and approved by the Bush Administration in the aftermath of the 11 September 2001 attacks.
