WWW.SONSOFISRAEL.COM 5 Congregation Sons of Israel P. O. Box 369 Manalapan, NJ 07726 To the ladies of our community,

What is Sisterhood? We are a group of women who come together to promote the welfare of our Congregation Sons of Israel family. We enhance our lives together - learning, laughing, exploring life and trying to make a difference. To date, we are in the midst of planning programs, events and fundraising for the upcoming year. Excellent ideas have been suggested and we look forward to doing as much as possible.

WE NEED YOUR HELP to do this. We need “people power” to move forward and continue to have Sisterhood as a strong and vital arm of our synagogue. Your contribution of annual dues to Daughters of Israel helps us to maintain and enhance the physical and spiritual needs of our Congregation and our community.

We know how full everyone’s life is…and we hope that we can be a part of your busy schedule. Get together with us for an event (or two), or a function (or two). Bring your friends and family! We look forward to sharing good deeds and good times.

elcome to 2019-2020 Daughters of Israel!

Let’sW face it sisters, 2018-19 Daughters of Israel had an EPIC year. Much love and gratitude to all who volunteered and participated in our programs. We hit home runs then, and we will do it again this year with the Presidium, Vickie Amron, Mindy Fromm, Rochelle Epstein and Donna Fassman remaining at the helm with a newly installed board. If you missed any of our programs last year, you will not want to miss them this year. We will continue to work together to bring exciting and enriching programs to the Sisterhood, Synagogue, and the community at large. The board was very busy this summer programming and planning upcoming events. September 22nd is our Daughters of Israel opening event: “A Taste of Your Genealogy”, with Steve Cohen & Caryn Alter, authors of “Jew Clues: How One Book, Two Authors and a Few Good Clues Can Jumpstart Your Jewish Genealogy Quest”. Soup and Smiles is going strong and is always looking for a helping hand. Please contact Ellen Harris at [email protected] for any information. The Social Club continues to thrive with Dorothy Jablonka. The Book Chat is also ongoing with Jane Goldstein. Check The Voice and calendar for information on upcoming dates. We welcome all who wish to become part of the board and committees. No prior experience required. We will train as needed. Please do not hesitate to reach out to Vickie ([email protected]), Mindy ([email protected]), Rochelle ([email protected]) or Donna ([email protected]) on how you can be a part of the excitement. A very special thank you to last year’s board for all their hard work and dedication to the Sisterhood and our Synagogue. Wishing all of you a happy, healthy, peaceful and sweet new year!

18 the VOICE • 1 ELUL 5779 - 1 TISHREI 5780 From My Perch By Maxine Pilavin What I Did on My Summer Vacation

I recall vividly how much I despised the “What I Did on My Summer Vacation” essay at the beginning of the school year. It was a boring topic. What was there to write, anyway? Attending the town tennis camp or swimming in my pool hardly qualified as nail-biting. Even if I had done something exciting, did the teacher really want a laundry list of my travel itinerary? I’d much rather have recorded my thoughts on the school dress code or teachers’ discipline styles. Today, as a teacher, I do not ask my students for these essays. However, when I was recently asked what I did on my summer vacation followed by the cautionary instruction “and don’t tell me about Highland Park,” I decided to discuss (and defend) my summer itinerary. OK, we have a summer home in Highland Park. No, Highland Park has no beach, no amusement parks, not even a town pool. But, and here it comes, my husband and I are not beach lovers. OK, let’s start there. The beach. True, the scenery is pretty. The breeze is fine on a hot day. But walking on sand, rocks, and seaweed is not my cup of tea, and lying on a beach towel like a piece of bread in a horizontal toaster is not my idea of fun. Everything I take there needs washing and repacking so that I can do this all over again the next day. No, I’m perfectly happy to leave the beach to others. And Highland Park? There is Raritan Avenue with its quaint downtown. One can walk along the Raritan and watch the boats. Johnson Park on the other side of town sports a small zoo. Just over the bridge is Zimmerli Art Museum. Within easy walking distance, New Brunswick has art galleries, three playhouses, and a Barnes and Noble. There is even a tour of historic New Brunswick. For the Jewish visitor, there are six Kosher eateries offering various ethnic cuisines and three ice cream shops. There are also several Orthodox , a Women’s Prayer Group, a vibrant Conservative synagogue, and an independent, egalitarian minyan. Finally, everything is in walking distance (Highland Park is only a mile long). Don’t get me wrong. Manalapan may be different, but is just as charming as Highland Park. It is spacious with many large homes and lots. Shopping centers have ample parking. It also has a feeling of newness with which most towns cannot compete. By contrast, Highland Park has smaller homes and grounds. Parking along Raritan Avenue is challenging during certain times of the day. Finally, Highland Park is not new. It recently celebrated its 100th anniversary. It is true that Highland Park doesn’t make the list of the ten most visited places in New Jersey. Nonetheless, it is peaceful and pleasant. We enjoy walking the streets meeting new people and greeting friends as they pass. For those still disappointed, take heart: we toured. We went to the historic battlefield at Gettysburg and saw a working farm in Amish Country. We took a QVC studio tour and ended with a visit to Valley Forge National Park. That is what I did on my vacation. Exciting? Perhaps not. Fun? That depends on your definition. History, culture, and relaxing walks fit mine. Hope you all had a great summer too!

All services begin with Mincha and continue with Se’udah Shelisheet (a light 3rd Shabbat meal) and conclude with Ma’ariv. We will conclude approximately one and a half hours after we begin. As always, morning minyan is at 8:30 on Sunday and 7:15 Monday-Friday. Weekday evening minyan is 8:30 Monday-Thursday. Our “minyan maker” app has been most helpful in assembling our troops. If you would like to receive a text “reminder” for a particular day of the week (morning or evening), please contact the Rabbi.
