According to Newton’s second law, F = ma, every part of our body must be exposed to a force to accelerate. Since our bodies are not symmetric, the direction of the force matters, and must be accounted for by ride designers. An additional complication is that not all parts of the body accelerate in the same way when the acceleration is changing, i.e. when there is jerk. Softer parts of the body provide varying levels of damping, and different parts of the body have different frequency responses and different resonance frequencies that should be avoided or reduced by the roller coaster designer. This paper discusses the effect of acceleration, jerk, snap and vibration on the experience and safety of roller coaster rides, using authentic data from a dive coaster as an example. Noordzij PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES TO ROLLER COASTER RIDES 2 Abstract Introduction: The aim of the study was to measure and analyse arousal of roller coaster passengers in both VR and real-world to make a comparison between these situations. To make arousal testable two approachesare introduced: separating the ride in contiguous phases vs. grouping data by roller coaster elements. Study 1: Participants watched roller coasters in virtual reality while their EDA and HR was measured. A decrease of these measures from the first to the last phase was found. Only a weak association of roller coaster elements with specific arousal reactions was ob- served. Study 2: With a small group of participants an amusement park was visited to ride real-world roller coasters. No phase-dependent change of arousal was found. However, some roller coaster elements were accompanied with specific changes in arousal. For all roller coasters continuous EDA and HR is reported. Conclusion: Even though no direct comparison between VR and real-world was con- ducted our research implies that both conditions have different effects on real-time arousal. We conclude that VR roller coasters can not be seen as an equivalent alternative to real- world roller coasters.     1872 The 1st Roller Coaster Is Built At Rocky Point, RI. The Ride Began With A Shove. Each year National Roller Coaster Day on August 16th people flock to amusement parks for a thrill and a few excited screams, too! Take a ride on a roller coaster near you. The day commemorates the first verticle loop roller coaster which was patented by Edwin Prescott on this day in 1898. A roller coaster consists of one or multiple cars on a track. While they are similar to railroad systems in design, the inclines and vertical loops incorporated in the structures aren’t for transportation. The oldest roller coasters are believed to have originated from the so-called “Russian Mountains.” Built-in the 17th century, these specially constructed hills of ice located near Saint Petersburg, Russia rose between 70 and 80 feet in height. Passengers faced 50-degree drops. Wooden supports supplied reinforcement. Roller coaster designs existed since at least 1872 when J.G. Taylor received one of the earliest patents. He called his creation an inclined railway. Another patent granted for an inclined-plane railway was granted to Richard Knudsen in 1878. For years, history has believed the first roller coaster in America opened at Coney Island on June 16, 1884. However, tracing J.G. Taylor’s patent and newspaper articles tells us a different story. According to the Providence Evening Press dated June 1872, Taylor’s elevated railway at Rocky Point, Rhode Island extended 400 feet and gave nine passengers a ride. It all started with a shove and allowing gravity to do the rest.

    2020 ANNUAL REPORT To Our Shareholders, When I was writing this letter one year ago, the world was entering an unprecedented global health crisis because of the COVID-19 virus, impacting nearly everyone on the planet. One year later, we are still dealing with the pandemic, but we believe the world is beginning to overcome the health crisis due to the rapid rollout and adoption of various vaccines created to protect the global population. It is our hope that you and your loved ones have been kept safe throughout this crisis. We also express our gratitude to the many healthcare workers and first responders worldwide who have cared for and continue to care for those affected and protect those who are vulnerable to this virus. Our annual financial results were significantly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of the pandemic, we were forced to close all our parks and dramatically reduce our workforce in March 2020. In June of 2020, we began to re-open some of our parks, following strict health and safety protocols established by federal, state and local authorities. During 2020, we took necessary steps to preserve the Company’s financial position to weather this unprecedented crisis. Today, I am pleased to report that we are planning to have all 12 of our parks open for their 2021 operating seasons. 2020 FINANCIAL PERFORMANCE In February 2021, we reported fourth quarter and fiscal 2020 results that clearly demonstrated our Company’s agility, creativity and determination to operate in one of the most challenging environments we have ever encountered.
