Joosten 4174070 Preface This report concludes our multidisciplinary project written as a part of the master program Hy- draulic Engineering at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). The project took place between August and November 2016 in the city of Guayaquil, Ecuador. The project has been written under the supervision of the department of Hydraulic Engineering at the TU Delft, the faculty 'Ingenieria en Ciencias de la Tierra' at Escuela Superior Politecnica del Litoral (espol) and Deltares. For three months we have had the opportunity to experience the lifestyle and culture of Ecuador. In the first place we want to thank the people who directly enabled us to start the project in Guayaquil. Pri- marily, we thank dr. ir. Erik Mosselman for both his help with the organisation of the project from the Netherlands and the supervision during our stay in Guayaquil. Secondly, we greatly thank our supervisor and host dr. ir. Mijail Arias Hidalgo. Without his help we would not have been able to execute the project the way we did. We acknowledge him for his great hospitality, the excursions to show us the culture of his country, translating during several interviews and of course his academic supervision during the project. Furthermore, we would like to thank ir. Jan van Overeem for his help during the preparations of the project and his overall supervision. -

AIR & SPACE POWER JOURNAL en Español 4rd Trimester 2018 Ecuador’s Leveraging of China to Pursue an Alternative Political and Development Path DR. R. EVAN ELLIS, PHD his paper examines Ecuador’s use of financing, commerce with, and investment from the People’s Republic China (PRC) in its pursuit of a path independent of the United States and traditional Western institutions. The work details significant Chinese engagement with the country in the political, economic, and military arenas. It finds important differences in the Tdynamics and progress of Chinese companies in different sectors, as well as numerous challenges for Chinese companies, including both legal challenges to past contracts, as well as political mobilization against construction and extractive sector projects. Ecuador’s engagement with the PRC is compared to and contrasted with patterns of engagement between the PRC and two other ALBA countries: Ve- nezuela and Bolivia. In all cases, populist elites changed the political system and accountability mecha- nisms, and isolated their country from traditional commercial partners in ways that helped Chinese investors to reach deals that personally benefitted the populist elites and the PRC-based companies at the expense of the country. The work concludes by examining the prospects for the evolution of the relationship under the country’s new leadership. In the literature on interactions between the People’s Republic of China and Latin America, the PRC relationship with Ecuador has received relatively little attention outside Ecuador itself.1 Among the countries of the Bolivarian Alliance of the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA), scholars 2 AIR & SPACE POWER JOURNAL have principally focused on the PRC relationship with Venezuela. -

Any quotation from thesis or use of any of the information contained in it must acknowledge this thesis as the source of the quotation or information.” i ABSTRACT Estuarine ecosystems and watersheds have suffered significant changes in its structure and functioning due to human activities as pollution generated by discharges of domestic and industrial wastewater. This study was conducted on water and sediments samples from the basin of Guayas River and the inner branches of Estero Salado (ES) in Guayaquil city, Ecuador during the period 2007 to 2012 in different phases. In this research were evaluated the relationship between several organic and inorganic pollutants as Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH), most toxic heavy metals (Pb, Hg. And Cd) and environmental parameters that may influence the invertebrate community structure in Protected and Urban Areas in superficial sediments of branches of Estero Salado. This survey contributes to knowledge of variation of polluted agents over space and time in estuarine sediments. To determine first the composition, abundance and diversity of macroinvertebrates in 43 water bodies in the Guayas province and evaluate the water quality by use the biotic index as (BMWP /Col).To determine changes in the macrobenthic community before and during the bioremediation process in sediments polluted by hydrocarbon in ES.To assess the feasibility of recolonization of benthic macroinvertebrates in artificial substrate on polluted areas in inner branches of ES.
