Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston will hold its Chapter. Every six years we meet to evaluate the previous six years and Ann Moynihan, CSJ Director Dplan for the next six years. We also elect new leadership who will be responsible for the implementation of the direction set by the Cheryl Duggan Chapter Body. A Chapter meeting is a sacred time in the life of a Coordinator Congregation, a time when all members put all concerns on hold and Mary Black, CSJ pray for “openness to the stirrings of the Spirit.” Consultant The theme for Chapter this year is “DARE TO DREAM.” Since Rosemary Brennan, CSJ our founding in 1650 in LePuy, France to our arrival in Boston from Council Liaison Flushing, New York in 1873, the women on whose shoulders we Joanne Gallagher, CSJ stand, time and time again, dared to dream, dared to dream big. Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston 3 From the Office of Mission Advancement Along with the two sisters profiled in this issue of Connecting for the wonderful work they have done, there is an article about a special group that joins us in mission and ministry. This group adds the letter A to CSJ. It stands for associate. You have seen them mentioned on these pages before, and if you use our cards, you may notice that “The Sisters of Saint Joseph and their Associates” will pray for the person you wish remembered. These women and men join us, immersing themselves in the special gift and spirit that is the essence of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. They are not vowed members, though they make annual promises. They remain with their families, and in their occupations, but they join with us in prayer, ministry, and spirit. This is a special year for us, sisters and associates few weeks ago, a person approached a together, for we are celebrating our associates’ 25th group I was with, looking for Sister Ann. anniversary. I hope that you will learn more about this I introduced myself and said that I was wonderful group of people, as you read the article, aA Sister of Saint Joseph of Boston. “Oh!” the and perhaps consider becoming a CSJA. person replied, “My favorite three letters, CSJ”, referring to the letters standing for Congregation of St. Joseph. The explanation followed, telling of the life-enriching influence that the sisters provided. It is a story that many sisters hear frequently. Personally, it always leaves me in awe at the profound, and sometimes simple ways the sisters who preceded us went about their everyday life doing things that effected the lives of many individuals and families. Even as a child, I heard many stories from my own family. One was about my grandfather, who lived across the street from the school, and was the youngest of four children who had lost their mother. He was taken into the first grade, though he was too young, so that his father, was able to work. Stories like this are multiplied over and over again, about Sisters looking after the needs of “the Dear Neighbor.” We always work with and for others. You, our friends, family and donors, increase what we are able to accomplish in our ministry. Your names are listed on these pages, but more importantly, you are each recorded in our hearts and in our prayers of thanksgiving.

4 CONNECTING If It Doesn’t Donor Day, June 5, 2011 Say Boston, It’s Not Ours We have, once again, received phone calls and notes from our friends, relatives, and donors saying that they have received solicitations from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield.

We share many things with our Springfield sisters: history, tradition, friendship and a passion for mission. We do not share finances. We do not share our mailing list with any other group. Nonprofits can purchase mailing lists from magazines and companies. The Springfield sisters do, and that is why you receive their mailings.

Our mailings have our logo and the mailing address is:

Higher education beckoned and she left the Paulist Center to concentrate on getting a Master’s Degree in Social Ethics at Weston School of Theology, then in Cambridge, MA. Sister Peggy followed up on this degree when, in 1985, she went to the National Office of Jesuit Social Ministries to work in advocacy on domestic economic issues related to the social ministries of the Jesuits. She left the position when she was elected to a leadership position within the Congregation as a General Councilor. At the end of her term, she took “a sabbatical of sorts.” She moved to St. Joseph Retreat Center at Cohasset, MA, and worked as a ister Peggy Comfrey attributes her cook for a year. “Strange as it seems,” she said, “It career-long interest in social justice was a form of relaxation.” issues to her high school years. “I think it Her next step was to work for the Irish Swas born in me during those years. Established in 1993 on the site of the old St. Margaret’s Hospital, St. Mary’s works to develop emotional, educational, economic skills, and stability for families living in homelessness and poverty. St. Mary’s supports 700 women and children annually with shelter, job training, and educational and clinical services, working intensively with one family at a time to ensure that children, who might otherwise make up the next generation of poverty, have options and bright futures. At the Center, women are prepared to enter the working world. “We give them confidence and focus on removing them from poverty.” They are given job training, educational and clinical services, and are prepared 75 Jubilarians Sisters Declan Sullivan and for handling themselves during an interview. At the Center, women are prepared to enter the working world. “We give them confidence and focus on removing them from poverty.” Sister Peggy echoes the mantra spoken by so many Sisters of St. Joseph. “The Community has always supported me. They’ve been wonderful.” When she asked to leave teaching to pursue her love of social justice issues, particularly with Some of our 60th Jubilarians regard to women, she was encouraged to do so. “It gives me a great freedom,” she said, “and is, in fact, part of the Congregation’s mission.” In 1650, six women in LePuy, France, formed the first group of Sisters of St. Joseph. They lived the mission of ministering to the “Dear Neighbor,” with a focus on loving service to those in need, especially women and children. The Sisters of St. Joseph continue their ministry with love and enthusiasm. And it is with this enthusiasm that Sister Peggy continues her career-long interest in social justice issues at St. Mary’s Center. †

The associates strive every day to bring the charism of unity and reconciliation into everyday life, and to achieve unity of neighbor with neighbor and neighbor with God.

14 CONNECTING As the program has grown over the past 25 years, men and women of diverse backgrounds and lifestyles have come together as associates not only to support and encourage each other and the Congregation, but also to share their faith journeys with the community. Associate members continue to live their personal lives, but are committed to live the mission of the Sisters of St. Joseph. They do not take canonical vows, and do not assume binding financial or legal commitments. Sister Marilyn McGoldrick, former director of the associates, said the program is special because the members, through outreach, live their own lives, but also assist the sisters in their ministries. “They Currently, there are approximately 100 associates, understand the importance of relating to others, some based locally and some associates are located in whether to each other or to people in the the New Mexico communities of Albuquerque, community, both in times of need and in times of Clovis, and Santa Rosa. Some associates host prayer groups in their homes, while others visit Sisters of St. Joseph at Bethany in Framingham, MA, some help care for the retreat centers at Nahant and Cohasset, and others sing in the Congregation’s choral group. In New Mexico, Sister Ann Kaufmann said the associates work in a prison ministry, lead Bible study groups, visit the sick and homebound, work in Eucharistic ministry, teach CCD classes, lead bereavement groups, and conduct a youth ministry. Sister Ann, who has been in New Mexico for 38 years and is currently located in Santa Rosa, described the associates as “people of deep faith who have naturally gravitated to activities that deepen that faith.” “They bring that faith,” she said, “into everyday life. The associates are ordinary folks who live with an extraordinary love for God and for their Dear Neighbor.” Calling the associates “life-giving, energizing, and supportive of our journey,” Sister Ann said, “It is a joy working with them. It’s easy to call on them anytime for help. They seem to always notice when I need an extra hand.”

Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston 15 Nancy Santangelo, who has been an associate for six years, said she “stands in awe” of what the sisters and associates do. “They are so inclusive, cheerful, and full of warmth,” said Nancy, who is affiliated with Blessed Sacrament Parish in Saugus, MA. Noting that we are all connected, Nancy said, “I try to be active in my parish and with my family. It’s important to live your faith, and be a model for others.” Nancy, who leads prayer groups in her home, said the associates “are extremely special,” and have been a gift in her life. Joan appreciates the close relationship between the sisters and the associates, noting that everyone is so friendly. Joan feels, “It’s like having girlfriends who are always there for you. Each associate brings her individual gifts to the group, and it expands what the group can do. If you put all our gifts together, that is what the Associates Program represents.”

O’Neil her college degree from Emmanuel College in junior high education. After seven years in the order, Sister Dorothy’s mother died suddenly. Her father, a house painter, was recuperating from a broken back. Her sister asked for her help in caring for their dad. “I figured I could serve God just as much outside the order, so I withdrew. But, I missed religious life so much that in 1973, I applied again, this time to the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph. I think my mother was working on this from Heaven.” Sister Dorothy was not thrilled to learn she was required to go through the novitiate process again, but it worked out. “I remember it as such a beautifully spiritual experience that I welcomed it.” Sister Dorothy took her final vows as a religious of the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1982. “You get to know Jesus through action.” Sister Dorothy lives that action every day.

Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston 33 Holiday Card Program

Order Early Easter, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day

Choosing our cards is a generous way of celebrating the lives of relatives and friends. Throughout the year, those you wish to remember through our card programs are remembered in prayer by the Sisters of St. Joseph and Associates. We encourage our donors to request family and friends to remember the Congregation by sending donations “in lieu of flowers.” All donations are acknowledged by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston Office of Mission Advancement.
