Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston 3 From the Office of Mission Advancement Along with the two sisters profiled in this issue of Connecting for the wonderful work they have done, there is an article about a special group that joins us in mission and ministry. This group adds the letter A to CSJ. It stands for associate. You have seen them mentioned on these pages before, and if you use our cards, you may notice that “The Sisters of Saint Joseph and their Associates” will pray for the person you wish remembered. These women and men join us, immersing themselves in the special gift and spirit that is the essence of the Sisters of Saint Joseph. They are not vowed members, though they make annual promises. They remain with their families, and in their occupations, but they join with us in prayer, ministry, and spirit. This is a special year for us, sisters and associates few weeks ago, a person approached a together, for we are celebrating our associates’ 25th group I was with, looking for Sister Ann. anniversary. I hope that you will learn more about this I introduced myself and said that I was wonderful group of people, as you read the article, Aa Sister of Saint Joseph of Boston. “Oh!” the and perhaps consider becoming a CSJA. person replied, “My favorite three letters, CSJ”, referring to the letters standing for Congregation of St. Joseph. The explanation followed, telling of the life-enriching influence that the sisters provided. It is a story that many sisters hear frequently. Personally, it always leaves me in awe at the profound, and sometimes simple ways the sisters who preceded us went about their everyday life doing things that effected the lives of many individuals and families. Even as a child, I heard many stories from my own family. One was about my grandfather, who lived across the street from the parish school, and was the youngest of four children who had lost their mother. He was taken into the first grade, though he was too young, so that his father, was able to work. Stories like this are multiplied over and over again, about Sisters looking after the needs of “the Dear Neighbor.” We always work with and for others. You, our friends, family and donors, increase what we are able to accomplish in our ministry. Your names are listed on these pages, but more importantly, you are each recorded in our hearts and in our prayers of thanksgiving. 4 CONNECTING If It Doesn’t Donor Day, June 5, 2011 Say Boston, It’s Not Ours We have, once again, received phone calls and notes from our friends, relatives, and donors saying that they have received solicitations from the Sisters of St. Joseph of Springfield. We share many things with our Springfield sisters: history, tradition, friendship and a passion for mission. We do not share finances. We do not share our mailing list with any other group. Nonprofits can purchase mailing lists from magazines and companies. The Springfield sisters do, and that is why you receive their mailings. Our mailings have our logo and the mailing address is: Sisters of St. Joseph of Boston 637 Cambridge St. Brighton, MA 02135. Please check to make sure your gift reaches its intended destination. • Archbishop John J. Williams
Record Group I.06.01 John Joseph Williams Papers, 1852-1907 Introduction & Index Archives, Archdiocese of Boston Introduction Biographical Sketch Scope and Content Content List (A-Z) Subject Index Introduction The John Joseph Williams papers held by the Archives of the Archdiocese of Boston span the years 1852-1907. The collection consists of original letters and documents from the year that Williams was assigned to what was to become St. Joseph’s parish in the West End of Boston until his death 55 years later. The papers number approximately 815 items and are contained in 282 folders arranged alphabetically by correspondent in five manuscript boxes. It is probable that the Williams papers were first put into some kind of order in the Archives in the 1930s when Fathers Robert h. Lord, John E. Sexton, and Edward T. Harrington were researching and writing their History of the Archdiocese of Boston, 1604-1943. At this time the original manuscripts held by the Archdiocese were placed individually in folders and arranged chronologically in file cabinets. One cabinet contained original material and another held typescripts, photostats, and other copies of documents held by other Archives that were gathered as part of the research effort. The outside of each folder noted the author and the recipient of the letter. In addition, several letters were sound in another section of the Archives. It is apparent that these letters were placed in the Archives after Lord, Sexton, and Harrington had completed their initial arrangement of manuscripts relating to the history of the Archdiocese of Boston. In preparing this collection of the original Williams material, a calendar was produced.

ARCHDIOCESE OF BOSTON PARISH CLOSING MANUAL “Rebuild My Church” VERSION 1.0 Tab 1 – Letter from Archbishop O’Malley May 25, 2004 Dear Father and your parish staff, Closing one parish makes me sad, but closing many is truly heartbreaking. Never would I ask this of you if I were not certain that it was necessary. Please know that your feelings of sorrow, frustration and anguish are normal and completely understandable. As Catholics we love our parishes and our parish churches, and we will grieve together as we endure the hard work of closing. This decision to close your parish was not made easily; rather it was made after a careful consideration of the entire Archdiocese and with much consultation with many people. Our intentions were to be fair to everyone; I am sorry for you and your parish that what has been such an important part of your lives can no longer continue. I know many parishioners are having difficulty seeing where this is all going to take us, but all must get ready to start rebuilding the church in Boston. We are ready to move forward with some serious thinking and some hard work that will enable us to rebuild from a solid foundation. We need to be morally solid, spiritually solid and financially solid in order to give life to our hopes and dreams for our faith community. We really do need to put more energy into our youth than into our heating bills, and more effort into reaching out to those who need us than to fixing buildings that are beyond repair.
