STATEMENT OF FACTS Your affiant, is a Special Agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”), and has been so employed since May 2017. I am currently assigned to the FBI Washington Field Office in Washington, D.C. Currently, I am tasked with investigating criminal activity in and around the Capitol grounds on January 6, 2021. As a Special Agent with the FBI, I am authorized by law or by a Government agency to engage in or supervise the prevention, detention, investigation, or prosecution of violations of Federal criminal laws. Background The U.S. Capitol is secured 24 hours a day by U.S. Capitol Police. Restrictions around the U.S. Capitol include permanent and temporary security barriers and posts manned by U.S. Capitol Police. Only authorized people with appropriate identification are allowed access inside the U.S. Capitol. On January 6, 2021, the exterior plaza of the U.S. Capitol was also closed to members of the public. On January 6, 2021, a joint session of the United States Congress convened at the United States Capitol, which is located at First Street, SE, in Washington, D.C. During the joint session, elected members of the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate were meeting in separate chambers of the United States Capitol to certify the vote count of the Electoral College of the 2020 Presidential Election, which had taken place on November 3, 2020. The joint session began at approximately 1:00 p.m. Shortly thereafter, by approximately 1:30 p.m., the House and Senate adjourned to separate chambers to resolve a particular objection. -

"Here all seems security and peace!": How Brookeville, Maryland Became United States Capital for a Day Abstract When the British burned Washington D.C. during the War of 1812, the city’s civilians and officials fledo t the surrounding countryside to escape the carnage. Fearful that the attack on the Capital could eventually spell defeat and worried for their city, these refugees took shelter in the homes and fields of Brookeville, Maryland, a small, Quaker mill town on the outskirts of Washington. These pacifist esidentsr of Brookeville hosted what could have been thousands of Washingtonians in the days following the attack, ensuring the safety of not only the people of Washington, but of President Madison himself. As hosts to the President, the home of a prominent couple stood in for the President’s House, and as the effective center of command for the government, the town was crowned Capital of the United States for a day. -

CAPITOL VISITOR CENTER TEACHERTEACHER LLESSONESSON PLANLAN The Capitol BuildiNg Introduction The Capitol is among the most architecturally impressive and symbolically important buildings in the world. The Senate and the House of Representatives have met here for more than two centuries. Begun in 1793, the Capitol has been built, burnt, rebuilt, extended, and restored; today, it stands as a monument not only to its builders but also to the American people and their government. As George Washington said, public buildings in the Capitol city “in size, form, and elegance, should look beyond the present day.”1 This activity features images of the U.S. Capitol building — architectural plans and artistic renderings from its original design and subsequent expansion. Examining these images, students engage in class discussion and individual reflection, considering how a building itself might serve as a symbol and monument. Then, they draft images that capture their own interpretation of how a Capitol building should look. The Record often reflects the intent of Congress in enacting T legislation. This report is one of a series on the legislative process. The Constitution mandates that each house shall keep and publish a journal of its proceedings. Accordingly, the House and Senate Journals, which are summaries of floor proceedings, are the official accounts of congressional proceedings, but the Record is better known and the most useful. The Record is published daily by the Government Printing Office (GPO) when either or both houses of Congress are in session. It is brought by GPO to the congressional post offices for early morning delivery to congressional offices as well as the House and Senate chambers. Each day’s Record contains an account of the previous day’s congressional activity. However, if a session extends past midnight, the Record is usually published in two parts with the first part printed the following day, and action after midnight included in the next day’s edition. -

Lesson 4 The American Founding and the Federal Era (1785-early-1800s) Words such as “virtue,” “piety” and “learning” are emphasized in the writings of our Founding Fathers and therefore appear in many of our governmental documents. In fact, when modern political scientists examined seventy-six of the most representative pamphlets and essays written by our Founders, they found the word “virtue” stressed over 300 times.1 Additionally, various synonyms meaning the same thing (such as “religion,” “morality,” and “knowledge”) also frequently appear in official writings (such as in the famous Northwest Ordinance, by which territories become states).2 Significantly, to our Founders, “religion” meant Christianity; “morality” or “virtue” meant Biblical character; and “knowledge” meant information or skills acquired within the framework of a Biblical worldview. The Founders consistently emphasized the elements of religion and morality (or piety and virtue) as the indispensable foundation and supports of our American system of government. They believed that if these pillars were lost, then our nation would eventually collapse. Notice some of their representative declarations affirming this: [I]t is religion and morality alone which can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand. 3 [R]eligion and virtue are the only foundations...of republicanism and of all free governments. 4 Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious 5 people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other. JOHN ADAMS , SIGNER OF THE DECLARATION [R]eligion and good morals are the only solid foundations of public liberty and happiness. 6 While the people are virtuous, they cannot be subdued; but when once they lose their virtue, they will be ready to surrender their liberties to the first external or internal invader. -

Volume 3, 1803-1818 ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION Historical Note The Academy has received letters, announcements, and other forms of correspondence since the founding in 1780. All such correspondence was the responsibility of the Corresponding Secretary, one of the original officers of the Academy. Beginning sometime in the late 1800s, incoming letters were pasted into bound scrapbooks, which the Academy referred to as “letterbooks.” This practice continued until 1988, when staff began saving correspondence in folders. For the time period covered by Volume 3, the Presidents of the Academy were John Adams (1791-1814) and Edward Augustus Holyoke (1814-1820). The Corresponding Secretaries were John Quincy Adams (1802-1809) and Josiah Quincy (1809-1823). Scope and Content The series of letterbooks in its entirety includes letters from newly-elected Fellows, formally accepting their elections; communications with other learned societies (especially, invitations to attend meetings or send representatives to official events, and offers to exchange publications); correspondence concerning gifts of books, maps, and natural history specimens; and inquiries from members and non- members regarding the submission and publication of articles. Volume 3 contains letters and other documents received by the American Academy from 1803 to 1818. Most of this incoming correspondence pertains to the election of members and other administrative duties. -

Though much has been made of the influences of geography and political philosophy on his accomplishments, little has been done in addressing the role played by his own health and various illnesses of the era. Disease and personal health issues were perhaps the greatest natural allies, catalysts, and limiting agents of Henry Clay’s accomplishments. Ill health helped to start his career under the tutelage of George Wythe, the deaths of his daughters while undertaking the seasonal journey from Kentucky to Congress pushed his ideas on internal improvements, and disease collided with several of his campaigns for the presidency. This article focuses on the personal letters of Henry Clay and those around him to discern their views on the various illnesses of his day and gauge their impact on his career. Keywords: United States, Henry Clay, public health Henry Clay once claimed that he would, “rather be right than be president,” a desire that would, perhaps unfortunately, come true for the indefatigable politician. Perhaps because of this he has largely been forgotten by the American public. Despite this, his nearly fifty years of public service spanned the most important events in the history of the early Republic, including the Louisiana Purchase, the War of 1812, the U.S.-Mexican War, and the various compromises that helped to slow the descent of the nation towards civil war. -
