Randall, Curator of Manuscripts and Rare Books, Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore 1,288 titles in ca. 1,475 physical volumes From Brandeis Universisty website Remembering Joachim Gaehde, professor emeritus of fine arts Joachim Gaehde Nov. 26, 2013 Joachim Gaehde, professor emeritus of fine arts, passed away Nov. 24, of pneumonia. He was 92 and lived in Arlington, Mass. A scholar of Carolingian illuminated manuscripts, Gaehde was the eminence grise of the Department of Fine Arts for most of his long tenure at Brandeis, said his colleague Nancy Scott, associate professor of fine arts. Gaehde was born in Dresden, Germany, in 1921. His mother was Jewish, and he survived most of the war years in Nazi Germany. He emigrated to the United States in 1950 and later earned his doctoral degree from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University. In 1962, Gaehde joined the Brandeis faculty as an associate professor and was promoted to full professor in 1969. He also served as dean of the faculty in the 1970s under President Marver Bernstein. Scott said that Gaehde defined the field of medieval studies at Brandeis, and became well known for his rigorous course studies; his kindly concern and manner toward students; and his wit, elegance and dedication. “As a colleague, [he] held the department to high standards, and at the same time he enjoyed the pleasures of his American life — he favored a blue Fiat convertible, which he drove with the top down in all kinds of weather; loved his Rhodesian Ridgeback dogs, which were part of his daily constitutionals; and was a gourmet cook,” recalled Scott.

    Zeszyty Naukowe Towarzystwa Doktorantów UJ Nauki Humanistyczne, Nr 8 (1/2014) ALEKSANDRA MRÓWKA (JAGIELLONIAN UNIVERSITY) THE ANGLO-SAXON TRANSFORMATIONS OF THE BIBLICAL THEMES IN THE OLD ENGLISH POEM THE DREAM OF THE ROOD ABSTRACT The main aim of this article is to present the Old English poem The Dream of the Rood as a literary work successfully mingling Christian and Germanic tradi- tions. The poet very skillfully applies the pattern of traditional secular heroic poetry to Christian subject-matter creating a coherent unity. The Biblical themes and motifs are shaped by the Germanic frame of mind because the addressees of the poem were a warrior society with a developed ethos of honour and cour- age, quite likely to identify with a god who professed the same values. Although the Christian story of the Passion is narrated from the Anglo-Saxon point of view, the most fundamental values coming from the suffering of Jesus and his key role in God’s plan to redeem mankind remain unchanged: the universal notions of Redemption, Salvation and Heavenly Kingdom do not lose their pri- mary meaning. Written in alliterative verse and maintained in the convention of dream allegory, this piece of early medieval literature is a mixture of Christian and Anglo-Saxon traditions. Although they seem to be contrasting, they are not antagonistic: these two worlds mingle together creating a coherent unity.

    The Instrumental Cross and the Use of the Gospel Book Troyes, Bibliothèque Municipale MS 960 Beatrice Kitzinger In approximately 909, a Breton named Matian together with his wife Digrenet donated a gospel manuscript to a church called Rosbeith. They intended it should remain there on pain of anathema, never to be taken from the church by force but provided with a dispensation for removal by students for the express purpose of writing or reading. With the exception of the date, which is recorded elsewhere in the manuscript, these specifications all appear in a short text written in distinctive, highlighted script at the close of Luke’s chapter list (f. 71): These little letters recount how Matian, and his wife Digrenet, gave these four books of the gospel as a gift to the church of Rosbeith for their souls. And whosoever should remove this evangelium from that church by force, may he be anathema—excepting a student [in order] to write or to read.1 The location of Rosbeith is unknown, but we may surmise that it was a church attached to a larger abbey in Brittany, according to Breton nomenclature.2 Apart from their Breton origins and evident appreciation for scholarship, the identities of Matian and Digrenet are similarly murky. The particularizing nature of the note extends only to a statement of Matian and Digrenet’s motive for the gift—“for their souls”—and a designation of the contents: “these four books of the gospel.” We know, however, that the couple was anxious Kitzinger – Instrumental Cross about the fate of their souls at judgment, and we know that they thought the gospel manuscript at hand might help.

    Scriptura 85 (2004), pp. 292-301 HELLENISTIC AND PHARAONIC INFLUENCES ON THE FORMATION OF COPTIC IDENTITY Annette Evans Department of Ancient Studies Stellenbosch University Abstract Conflicting descriptions of Coptic identity still exist today. The Copts regard themselves as those descendents of Pharaonic Egyptians who have retained their identity because of their Christian faith, in spite of Egypt having become a predominantly Islamic, Arab country. They claim to have “caught a glimpse of the Light of Christianity” before the birth of Christ. This article offers iconographical evidence to supplement an explanation of how the ancient Egyptian mythopoeic thinking, in combination with the syncretistic cultural environment of Hellenism, mediated this phenomenon. Today the Coptic Orthodox Church of Egypt represents “a return to the apostolic father type leading of the church”. Although pharaonic and gnostic influences appear to have contributed to their remarkable eusebeia, the Copts perceive themselves as having abided by the decisions of the first three Church Councils and have respected and upheld the canon. 1. Introduction The word Copt originated from the ancient Egyptian word for Memphis, Hah-ka-Ptah – the house or temple of the spirit of Ptah. With the suppression of the prefix and the suffix the stem kaPt or gypt remained, which was then corrupted to the Arabic Qibt (Atiya 1968:16). The Hellenes used Aiguptos for both Egypt and the Nile, and Aiguptoi was used by Origen to distinguish Egyptian Christians from Hellenes (Van der Vliet and Zonhoven 1998:117). The Copts have a unique identity: inseparable from their pharaonic past, yet intimately associated with the beginning of Christianity.

    CHRISMONS East Liberty Presbyterian Church 116 South Highland Avenue Pittsburgh, PA 15206-3985 CHRISMONS The word “Chrismon” is a combination of the words “Christ” and “monogram”. The word Chrismon has been adopted to refer to special Christmas tree ornaments that have been developed to display symbols of Christ. The designs of the Chrismons has over the years been extended to represent symbols of Christianity. All the ornaments are done in white and gold. In 1957 Chrismon ornaments were made and displayed on a Christmas tree at the Lutheran Church of the Ascension in Danville, Virginia. Through this church patterns were made available, and the idea of having a Chrismon tree has spread. Over the years more ornaments have been developed so that now a Chrismon may be a monogram, a sign, a symbol, a type, or a combination of such figures. The only requirement is that it refer primarily to Christ and God. The Eight Pointed Star symbolizes regeneration through Baptism. The Triquetra and Circle. The endless circle suggests eternity. The triquetra—the figure composed of three separate and equal arcs— symbolizes the One God who showed himself to man in three separate and distinct persons. Christogram with Cross, Cho Rho, Triangle and M. The Chi Rho, Cross and Triangle are familiar sym- bols of Christ and the Trinity, M is the monogram for his mother, Mary, which suggests His humanity. The Fleur-De-Lis is the conventionalized form of the lily, the flower of the virgin Mary, and the symbol of the annunciation of Jesus. The Five-Pointed Star is the great symbol of the Epiphany; the star that led the three wise men to the nativity.
