A primeira é um formato conhecido entre a comunidade de jogadores como Pay to Win e a segunda é um formato de consumo que aqui nomeamos como Pay to Be. Diante deste objeto, nos questionamos: Como essas diferentes modalidades de consumo afetam a dinâmica dos jogos? Nossa bibliografia foi pautada por autores como O’Reilly (2005), Campbell (2006) e Huizinga (2000). Foram analisados dois jogos que correspondem às duas modalidades aqui debatidas, respectivamente: o League of Legends e o Grand Chase. Recorremos, finalmente, à técnica de Grupo Focal, convidando cinco gamers para discutir a problemática. McKechnie, University of Western Ontario Assistant Professor Carol Tilley ABSTRACT This dissertation is a qualitative study that analyzes diverse views on the popularity of Educational Graphic Novels (EGNs) in Korea and children’s use of this medium. In order to elicit voices of children who are the main readers of EGNs, in-depth focus group interviews were conducted with fourteen Korean children ages seven to eleven. Interviews with teachers and librarians who work with children, observations at an elementary school and a public library, and content analysis of selected EGNs were also conducted. Based on the transcripts and reflective notes from the interviews, field notes from the observations, and the content of the three selected EGNs, this study investigates the reasons for popularity and patterns of children’s use of EGNs. Analyses revealed that most Korean children read EGNs primarily for fun, not to learn information. Although the EGNs consist of both entertaining and educational elements, children easily picked out and enjoyed only the fun parts, while ignoring the information parts. There was barely any gender difference in children’s passion for EGNs, but some differences existed in how girls and boys responded to certain elements of the EGNs – the boys responded to violent illustrations more than girls did and the girls responded to the subject of romance and were attracted by a strong as well as smart and pretty female character.

    (Incorporated in Bermuda with limited liability) (Stock Code: 00142) 2006 Interim Results – Unaudited FINANCIAL HIGHLIGHTS • Recurring profit improved by 28.0 per cent to US$69.0 million (HK$538.2 million) from US$53.9 million (HK$420.4 million). • Turnover increased by 20.6 per cent to US$1,136.5 million (HK$8,864.7 million) from US$942.5 million (HK$7,351.5 million), principally reflecting Indofood’s increase in turnover and a strengthened rupiah. • Profit attributable to equity holders increased by 18.8 per cent to US$72.2 million (HK$563.2 million) from US$60.8 million (HK$474.2 million) due principally to higher recurring profit contributions from PLDT and Indofood. • Profit contribution from operations increased by 20.8 per cent to US$87.7 million (HK$684.1 million) from US$72.6 million (HK$566.3 million). • Basic earnings per share increased by 18.3 per cent to U.S. 2.26 cents (HK17.63 cents) from U.S. 1.91 cents (HK14.90 cents). • Equity attributable to equity holders increased by 16.7 per cent to US$446.9 million (HK$3,485.8 million) at 30 June 2006 from US$382.8 million (HK$2,985.8 million) at 31 December 2005. • Consolidated gearing ratio improved to 0.99 time at 30 June 2006, compared with 1.12 times at 31 December 2005. • An interim dividend of U.S. 0.13 cent (HK1.00 cent) (2005: U.S. 0.13 cent or HK1.00 cent) per ordinary share has been declared.
