The 'Culture Wars' Reloaded: Trump, Anti-Political Correctness and the Right's 'Free Speech' Hypocrisy Dr. Valerie Scatamburlo-D'Annibale University of Windsor, Windsor, Ontario, Canada Abstract This article explores how Donald Trump capitalized on the right's decades-long, carefully choreographed and well-financed campaign against political correctness in relation to the broader strategy of 'cultural conservatism.' It provides an historical overview of various iterations of this campaign, discusses the mainstream media's complicity in promulgating conservative talking points about higher education at the height of the 1990s 'culture wars,' examines the reconfigured anti- PC/pro-free speech crusade of recent years, its contemporary currency in the Trump era and the implications for academia and educational policy. Some have pointed to the spread of right-wing populism in the aftermath of the 2008 global financial crisis that culminated in Brexit in Europe and Trump's victory (Kagarlitsky, 2017; Tufts & Thomas, 2017) while Fuchs (2018) lays bare the deleterious role of social media in facilitating the rise of authoritarianism in the U.S. and elsewhere. Briefing paper Covid-19 Disinformation Briefing No.1 27th March 2020 Top Lines • Both state-sponsored media and extremist movements are exploiting the Covid-19 situation to spread harmful and hateful messaging on social media; • Anti-migrant and far-right networks are exploiting the Covid-19 situation to spread disinformation targeting migrants, refugees and other vulnerable populations on- and offline, as well as explicit threats of violence/harm to non-white populations from white supremacist groups online; • Crisis points like Covid-19 are playing into “accelerationism” on the extreme right, which promotes the idea that democracy is a failure and that groups should accelerate its end through mobilising social conflict and violence; • Misinformation about cures or treatments for coronavirus continue to circulate widely on Twitter and Facebook, often amplified by politicians and news media, and has contributed to fatal offline incidents; • Notwithstanding technology platforms’ efforts to address disinformation on Covid-19, we are still seeing platforms both large and small are hosting conspiracy theories that could undermine efforts to deal with the crisis and its growth, including those disputing the reality of the virus and its impacts on health and life, which are particularly prevalent in closed groups and chat channels; • There are some attempts to profiteer off the coronavirus pandemic through online platforms and advertising, despite platforms banning such practices. -

SUMMARY This UNICEF working paper aims to track and analyse online anti-vaccination sentiment in social media networks by examining conversations across social media in English, Russian, Romanian and Polish. The findings support the assumption that parents actively use social networks and blogs to inform their decisions on vaccinating their children. The paper proposes a research model that detects and clusters commonly-used keywords and intensity of user interaction. The end goal is the development of targeted and efficient engagement strategies for health and communication experts in the field as well as for partner organisations. Alonzo* INTRODUCTION In May 2006, a California state appeals court became the first court to explicitly recognize that Internet journalists are afforded the same journalist’s privilege granted to traditional print and broadcast journalists. The defendants in O’Grady v. Superior Court maintained individual websites on which they published trade secrets about an unreleased Apple Computer (Apple) product.1 Unanimously overrul- ing the trial court, the appeals court held that the petitioners were pro- tected by California’s reporter’s shield law and the constitutional journalist’s privilege from being forced to testify about the identity of their sources.2 Because they were publishers of websites, and because they had published not news but the fruits of “trade secret misappropriation,” Apple argued petitioners were not “engaged in legitimate journalistic activities” and were not part of the class of persons protected by the California’s shield law.3 The court determined, however, that the peti- * J.D., 2006, New York University School of Law; B.A., B.J., University of Mis- souri, 2003.
