Laudetur Iesus Christus!

An antiphon in traditional Western Christian liturgy is a short sentence, usually from Scripture, sung or read during parts of the Liturgy. Anti- phons are used before and after the psalms in the praying of the Divine Office. Antiphons are also used at the entrance of Mass, before Communion, and in the Traditional Latin Mass during the Of- fertory too. Those of you who come to daily Mass are very much familiar with the use of antiphons. During the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass the anti- phon, according to the G.I.R.M – General Instruc- tion of the Roman Missal takes pride and place in usage above hymns. Hymns; in traditional Catho- lic usage where only used during the praying of the Divine Office and it was only through Protes- tant services that the singing of hymns became popular during Liturgy; Martin Luther took many of the antiphon chants and set them to hymns style singing. On the First Sunday of Advent we started singing the Entrance Antiphon as the priest celebrate leaves the Sacristy and makes his way down the side aisle and then the singing of an opening hymn. Likewise we have been hearing the organist sing the Communion Antiphon before the Com- munion hymn. Advent is a penitential season which is why, except for Gaudete Sunday; we don’t hear instrumental music in church and see flowers on the altar. The only decoration is the which I hope you have noticed we have a new stand this year with real candles and fresh greens. If anyone would like to sponsor or memo- rialize the new stand; please see me or call me. Speaking of Antiphons; you have noticed in the pews a card-stock sheet of paper with the Marian Antiphon Alma Redemptoris Mater this anti- phon is used from Advent - February 2 in place of the Salve Regina which we have been singing. The translation of the Alma is: Mother of Christ! Hear thou thy people’s cry, Star of the deep, and portal of the sky! Mother of Him Who thee from nothing made, Sinking we strive and call to thee for aid; Oh, by that joy which brought to thee, Thou Virgin first and last, let us thy mercy see. Amen.
