The Thunderbirds will welcome the visiting Chippewas from APRIL Central Michigan University. 2-4 NCAA Regional Championship TBA Last Time Out 17-18 NCAA National Championship TBA Amidst the red-ladened home crowd, the Southern Utah gymnastics team topped the Utah State Aggies for their second home victory in a row. The Thunderbirds were awarded a 195.875, their second highest team score of the season, while USU Home games in bold posted a 195.175. All times listed are Mountain Taking a sweep of the individual event awards, with the exception of all-around title, SUU’s Rachel Smith was crowned vault NCAA National Rankings champion, Becky Rozsa-Thompson earned the bars title, Shylen Murakami took home the beam award and Hannah Nipp tied the school record on floor giving her the floor title. Rank Team Avg. On floor the Thunderbirds saw a stand-out performance from Nipp as she scored a 9.950 - a career high which tied her for 1 Oklahoma 197.763 first in the school record book. As a team the T-Birds posted a 48.925 on floor. 2 Florida 197.594 Smith set a career-high and tied for third in the school record book with her 9.900 routine. All together, SUU earned a 49.225 3 Utah 196.944 on vault, their routinely top ranking event. 4 Denver 196.940 SUU was also awarded a 48.925 on bars as Rozsa-Thompson topped the scoreboard with a 9.875. 5 UCLA 196.925 Murakami had the best beam routine of the evening, earning a 9.875. As a team, the T-Birds totaled 48.800 on beam. 6 Minnesota 196.763 The Flippin’ Birds’ still sit in the No. 23 spot nationally and are ranked 15 on vault, 22 on bars, 29 on beam and 31 on floor. 7 Alabama 196.694 Murakami has moved up the ranks from 21 to 20 in nationally bar standings, averaging a 9.870. 8 Michigan 196.681 MRGC Specialist of the Week | Vault and Floor 9 LSU 196.645 The Mountain Rim Gymnastics Conference released the winners of the MRGC Specialist of the Week awards for week four 10 Georgia 196.460 and Southern Utah’s sophomore Rachel Smith was named Vault Specialist of the Week and junior Hannah Nipp was named Floor Specialist of the Week. 11 Washington 196.388 This is Nipp’s second award of the season and Smith’s first. 12 California 196.360 Smith scored a career-high on vault with a 9.900 and was named Vault Event Champion of the meet. The sophomore is 13 Kentucky 196.320 currently the second-highest ranked vaulter in the MRGC and is ranked 49th in the country on the event with an average of 14 Nebraska 196.240 9.830. 15 Arkansas 196.090 Nipp also scored a career-high with a 9.950 on floor, tying the program record, and was named Floor Event Champion of the 16 BYU 196.075 meet. The junior is currently the fourth-highest ranked floor worker in the MRGC and is ranked 55th in the country on the 17 Auburn 196.065 event with an average of 9.860. 18 Iowa State 195.860 Opponent Preview: Central Michigan Chippewas 19 Maryland 195.750 The Chippewas look to bounce back this week after their 194.550 - 195.075 loss to Northern Illinois last weekend. CMU 20 Arizona 195.705 averages a score of 194.913. 21 Missouri 195.685 Freshman Hannah Demers competed in the all-around for the Chippewas and won the event last week, posting a 39.150. 22 Oregon State 195.575 CMU also saw noteable performance from senior Denelle Pedrick last week as she earned the vault (9.900) and the floor 23 Southern Utah 195.560 (9.875) titles while tying her teammate, Kennedy Rae Johnson, for first on bars (9.800). Pedrick is currently No. 23 in the country in the all-around event, averaging 39.250. 2020 Southern Utah Gymnastics Coaching Staff

Head Coach Scotty Bauman Head coach Scotty Bauman will celebrate his 29th year at the helm of the SUU gymnastics program in 2020, setting him apart as the longest tenured coach in all of Thunderbird athletics. Over that time, Bauman has overseen the ascent of the squad from a relatively unknown entity to one which has ingrained a reputation as one of the nation’s established and respected programs. The ascent has culminated in seven consecutive NCAA Regional appearances, a three-time All-Ameri- can in Elise Wheeler and the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Championship trophy. Bauman’s work with the SUU squad has been a constant process. During his first year at SUU, his gymnasts set school records for practically every individual and team score. That 1992 season set a precedent for those which would follow, as the Thunderbird gymnasts have virtually rewritten the record books in each subsequent year. The only exception was in 1994, when Bauman saw the departure of seven seniors that were at Southern Utah when he joined the program. Under Bauman’s guidance the team has jumped its all-around average from 182.16 in 1991 (the year before he came) to a school-record 195.181 in 2010. The team’s assault on the record books has been relentless. A quick glance at the SUU book shows that every individual record has been equaled or set within the last six seasons and every team mark has been established in the last eight. Although 2000 was the first time the entire team qualified for the post-season, at least three SUU gymnasts have qualified for at-large berths in all but one of Bauman’s seasons at Southern Utah, including four in 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2007 while five qualified in 2001. In 1998 the Thunderbirds used just two all-arounders; both advanced for the regional meet. Bauman has earned several coaching honors throughout the years, including the 1993 Midwest Region Coach of the Year, 2010 WAC Coach of the Year and the North Central Region Coach of the Year in 2003 and 2010. A 1990 graduate of Utah State University, Bauman is in his first head-coaching capacity. He cut his coaching teeth under the tutelage of former USU head coach Ray Corn where he helped develop the Aggies into a national power. Bauman spent seven years as both an undergraduate and graduate assistant in Logan. Bauman resides in Cedar City with his wife Stephanie and his two daughters, Shay and Shaun. 2020 Southern Utah Gymnastics Coaching Staff Assistant Coach Jeff Richards Jeff Richards started his coaching career at SUU and now returns after stints at Penn State, George Washington, Utah State, Iowa, Wisconsin-Stout and Winona State. Richards has over 25 years of collegiate coaching experience across Divisions I, II and III. In one season at George Washington, Richards helped the Colonials set school records on the vault and uneven bars, while helping the program to a record five first team All-East Atlantic Gymnastics League performers in 2014. He helped Chelsea Raineri to an EAGL co-championship on the vault - the first conference champion for George Washington since 2002 - and earn the EAGL Rookie of the Year award. Richards spent five seasons at the helm of the Aggies program and was named the 2011 NCAA Division I National Associa- tion of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches North Central Region Co-Head Coach of the Year. His stay in Logan, Utah spanned from 2009-2013 and included 19 student-athletes advancing to the NCAA Regionals. His Aggies sent five individual qualifiers to the NCAA Regional during the 2009 and 2011 seasons, while the 2010, 2012 and 2013 teams each advanced three student-athletes to regional competition. Nine of Richards’ pupils garnered All-West- ern Athletics Conference honors on 13 occasions. Prior to USU, Richards spent the 2005-08 seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Iowa, where he was named the 2008 North Central Region Assistant Co-Coach of the Year with fellow Iowa assistant, Talya Vexler. He served as Iowa’s main uneven bars coach and also oversaw travel, equipment and scheduling for the Hawkeyes. Richards began his coaching career as a student-assistant at Utah State from 1988-90, before transferring to Southern Utah, where he finished his student-assistant coaching duties and earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education from SUU in 1995. While at Utah State, Richards helped the Aggies to two appearances in the NCAA Regional Championships in both 1989 and 1990, and coached Tana Davis in the all-around to the NCAA National Championships both seasons. Richards also helped coach all-High Country Athletic Conference honoree Stephanie Green in 1990. From 1998-04, Richards was head coach at the University of Wisconsin-Stout and was head coach at Winona State Univer- sity from 2004-05 before joining Iowa in 2005. Richards began his official career here at SUU with head coach Scott Bauman from 1996-98 after receiving his bachelors degree from SUU. Richards was born and raised in Logan, Utah and has two daughters, Kanyon and Kennedy.

Assistant Coach Jamie Wysong Jamie Wysong enters her seventh year as a member of the Southern Utah University Women’s Gymnastics staff. After spending her first two years as the Director of Gymnastics Operations, Wysong was promoted to full-time assistant coach ahead of the 2016 season. As a member of the SUU staff, Wysong has been an essential part of some of the most successful seasons in the program’s history. During the 2017 season, she coached former Thunderbird Stacie Webb to the first perfect 10.0 in program history on the balance beam. Wysong was also named Assistant Coach of the Year in the North Central Region by the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics Coaches for Women following the conclusion of the 2017 season. Wysong is also the program director and a head coach at the Southern Utah Gymnastics Academy and an assistant camp director at the SUU Gymnastics Camps. During her time as a member of the gymnastics staff, Wysong graduated Summa Cum Laude from Southern Utah University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Communications with an emphasis on Media Studies. Prior to coming to Cedar City, Wysong was an optional team coach and lead choreographer for 10 years at All American Gymnastics in Lindon, Utah. During her time at All American, she coached 10 National Qualifiers, four National Cham- pions, and numerous other Regional and State Champions. During her time as a gymnast, Wysong was a level 10 gymnast and a state champion on bars, beam, and floor. When she’s not coaching gymnastics, Wysong races sprint cars and midget cars with her family. She holds a Class D license for land speed racing through the Southern California Timing Association and the Utah Salt Flats Racing Association and was the 2008 Winter Cup Series Go-Kart Champion. 2020 Southern Utah Gymnastics Results
