Mercer Study Abroad Advising Guide Types of Study Abroad Programs: Exchange Programs Affiliate/Direct Enroll Programs Faculty-Led Programs Summer Programs/Internships Eligibility Requirements: . 2.5 GPA for Faculty-led and Affiliate Programs . 3.0 GPA for Exchange Programs . 3.7 GPA for Regent’s Park College, Oxford . Student must be in good academic and financial standing at Mercer. Application Process: Students must apply through the online application site Terra Dotta. Once approved, students studying through Exchange and Affiliate/Direct Enroll Programs will need to complete the Host University/Program application provided by the Mercer Study Abroad Office. During preliminary advising and the application process we recommend that students meet with their Faculty Academic Advisor to discuss course needs while abroad, and their Financial Aid Advisor to understand funding available for study abroad. Current Exchange Programs: Al Akhawayn University- Morocco University of Nottingham- England, United Kingdom Bamberg University- Germany University of Seoul- South Korea Hong Kong Baptist University- Hong Kong University of Strasbourg- France Karlsruhe University of Applied Science- Germany University of Sussex- England, United Kingdom Linnaeus University- Sweden University of the West of Scotland- Scotland, United Seinan Gakuin University- Japan Kingdom University of Chichester- England, United Kingdom Yonsei University- South Korea University of Essex- England, United Kingdom How does an Exchange Program work? . Students pay Mercer Tuition and the Study Abroad Fee. ALL Financial Aid normally received applies. Students pay room, board, and fees directly to the Exchange Program. ALL credits return as Mercer credits and count toward Mercer GPA. Student should budget between $3,000-5,000 for additional expenses while abroad such as plane tickets, visa fees, personal and travel expenses. EXCEPTION: Students studying at Al Akhawayn University continue to pay Mercer Tuition, Room and Board plus the Study Abroad Fee. No fees should be paid to Al Akhawayn University. Current Affiliate/Direct Enroll Programs: AIFS: American Institute for Foreign Study MOSAIC- Florence, Italy CAPA: The Global Education Network Regent’s Park College, Oxford- England, United CIDEF: International Center for French Studies Kingdom ISA: International Studies Abroad University of Stellenbosch- South Africa Project Go Swansea University- Wales, United Kingdom Center for Cross Cultural Studies: Spanish Studies DIS- Study Abroad in Scandinavia Abroad How does an Affiliate/Direct Enroll Program work? . Students pay the Study Abroad Fee at Mercer and ALL other fees (tuition, room, board, etc.) to the Affiliate/Direct Enroll Program. Federal and state aid or private alternative loans may be applicable. Mercer institutional aid does not apply to Affiliate/Direct Enroll programs. Credits return as transfer credit and do not count toward Mercer academic GPA. GPA from credits abroad will be taken into consideration for Financial Aid. Student should budget between $3,000-5,000 for additional expenses while abroad such as plane tickets, visa fees, personal and travel expenses. EXCEPTION: Students studying at Regent’s Park College, Oxford will be invoiced by Mercer for all tuition, room, board, and fees associated with this program. If fees exceed Mercer costs student are responsible for paying the difference. Mercer institutional aid does not apply. Students must have a 3.7 GPA to apply to the program. Acceptance to this program is competitive and space is limited. Faculty-Led Programs Faculty-led programs vary by year and are offered during winter break, spring break, and summer terms. Cost, credits, and destinations associated with these programs vary and may or may not require students to pay Mercer tuition. Credits: Typically, faculty will offer the following credits; Winter or Spring Break: 1 credit hours. These trips are essentially seen as supplemental and associated with another course in the Fall or Spring term. Summer programs generally offer 3-6 credits. Cost: Most faculty-led programs run between $2,000-5,000 not including Mercer tuition. In most cases, Winter and Spring Break programs have tuition built into the Fall and Spring term costs, but summer tuition is an out of pocket expense. Summer/Internship Programs Summer/Internship/Service Learning Programs: These programs are provided through our Exchange or Affiliate/Direct Enroll programs and vary by location, cost, and length of program. South Africa Internship Program: Students have the opportunity to intern with various companies in Cape Town, South Africa during the Fall, Spring, or Summer Terms. Semester: Those studying participating in this program during for a semester will work with the International Global Studies department or develop independent study and internship courses. Students pay Mercer tuition and all other costs directly to the program. Typical cost (not including tuition) is $5,000-8,000 and includes estimated costs for personal and travel expenses. ALL Financial aid applies. Summer: Students participating in this program during the summer terms may choose to take this as a credit or not credit bearing internship. For credit bearing internships students pay Mercer tuition and all other costs to program. Typical cost (not including tuition) is $3,000-5,000 and includes estimated costs for personal and travel expenses. Students Studying Abroad outside Mercer’s approved program list: In some cases we may have students who decided to study abroad through a program that has not been vetted or approved by the Office of International Programs. Our current policy is that students must go through the standard transient permission process through the registrar’s office. .
