Liz Clarke relishes the challenge of being at the helm of a growing company and has grown BikeRight! from its inception to become the largest cycle training and development company in the UK with the most diverse range of services from child cycle training to cycle awareness training for other road users. BikeRight! is an award winning female owned social business delivering a wide range of cycling related services to public and private sector clients. BikeRight! Liz is a trustee of a Manchester based disability charity, Simply Cycling, and a supporter of LGBT youth Manchester. Liz has a passion for all things cycling and when time permits gets out on her bike whenever possible. Cycling from girl to woman, Martine Tommis is a founder member of Team Glow, the Manchester based cycling network for women. In February 2011 we set out to make history when seven women set up Team Glow. By September 100 women and their bicycles gathered together to ride their bikes in the Manchester 100 sportive. We now have a paying membership of 127 and Facebook group of 700+, offering day rides, training, tours and more. I love sharing my lifetime affair with bicycles, like a classic steel ride, enjoy long day rides and have a passion for cycle touring - Iceland was fab. I am also a member of Lancashire Road Club, despite hailing from Yorkshire. Gabriele Schliwa is managing the Manchester Cycling Lab at The University of Manchester with the goal to turn Manchester into a real-life laboratory for the study of cycling. She has been using her bike to move around the city since she arrived from Germany a year ago. -

PUTTING SHOULDER PADS ON SCHLECK: HOW THE BUSINESS OF PROFESSIONAL CYCLING COULD BE IMPROVED THROUGH A MORE AMERICAN STRUCTURE Chris Deubert* INTRODUCTION t was announced in August 2010 that three-time Tour de France I winner Alberto Contador, less than a week after his latest victory, was leaving his Kazakhstan-based team, Astana, at the end of the sea- son.1 Contador reportedly rejected a two-year, nearly $13 million deal from Astana,2 instead choosing to sign with Bjarne Riis’ Danish-based Saxo Bank-SunGard team for a reported two years and $20 million.3 The move was particularly notable because Contador was essentially replac- ing rider Andy Schleck, who announced that at the end of the 2010 sea- son he would be leaving Riis’ squad to form a team based in his native Luxembourg.4 Schleck finished second to Contador in both the 2009 and 2010 Tours de France, including a controversial thirty-nine second victo- 5 ry in 2010. -

Civilising Processes and Doping in Professional Cycling

Drawing on the theoretical approach of Elias, the author argues that over time stronger shame feelings in relation to doping became part of the social habitus of professional cyclists and doping became increasingly ‘pushed behind the scenes’. Yet, contradictions and reversals persisted in attitudes and behaviour. These fractures and discontinuities occurred due to several interconnected processes: the role of suffering within the sport and the nature of mutual identification that developed around it, the specific structure of the figuration of professional cycle sport, and the slowness of a comprehensive and effective monopoly apparatus over the control of doping to emerge and the perceived legitimacy of this. Combined these processes generated a social habitus in which doping only very slowly came to be perceived as shameful and which varied across space and time. Despite this a civilising advance is evident. Keywords Civilising processes, doping, Elias, habitus, professional cycling Introduction In this article, drawing on the theoretical approach of Norbert Elias, I argue that over the course of the last 70 years professional cyclists have undergone civilising processes in relation to doping within the sport. It is not my contention that doping has declined amongst professional cyclists over that time period; that would be very difficult to empir- ically ascertain. -

The benefits to cycling are clear, but barriers are present for women who wish to participate in the sport. While there have been substantial gains in understanding aspects of cycling, there remains a lack of in-depth phenomenological descriptions from a woman’s perspective, as the sport is dominated by men. This study explored the lived experiences of 8-12 women competitive road cyclists in relation to their thoughts, feelings, and actions. This inquiry used interpretive phenomenological analysis of semi- structured interviews. The analysis revealed several themes, including sexist attitudes and behaviors, gendered barriers such as size, interpersonal dynamics between cyclists, and inclusive transitions for women competitive road cyclists. These findings suggest that cycling may be a microcosm for broader societal trends, and implications for reducing gendered cycling barriers, promoting women cyclists, and creating an inclusive road cycling community are
