Student Achievement: John Marsden and Hachette Australia Prize for Young Writers Congratulations to Lydia Schofield (Year 10, Rutter House) who has been shortlisted for the 2018 John Marsden and Hachette Australia Prize for Young Writers. This is a great honour and an outstanding achievement even more so because Lydia was shortlisted for the same prize in 2017. This year there have been 722 submissions, so being shortlisted for the prize is amazing. CONTENTS As a shortlisted writer, Lydia will be attending a full day writing workshop on Thursday 30 August. I wish her all the very best throughout the workshop as well as in the final decision regarding the prize. We are all very proud of Lydia. 1 Principal’s Report 3 Assistant Principal’s Report Google and AGL Incursion 3 Parents and Carers On Friday, 24 August, five representatives from AGL and Google 3 Growth Mindset Inc. conducted an interactive workshop on artificial intelligence 4 Junior and machine-learning involving 40 of our students from Years 9 to 11. The students had the opportunity to engage with cutting- 4 edge developments in the fields of artificial intelligence and 4 Senior School machine-based learning, along with real-world applications and 5 Music career prospects. Team members were at hand to assist students 8 Careers with each stage of their endeavours and provided support and feedback in real-time as needed. 9 Student Growth and Leadership The workshop aligned with the General Capabilities of Critical and Creative Thinking, 9 Sport along with Personal and Social Development as well as aligning with the STEM/STEAM 11 Art focus of the school. This was a great opportunity for our students, which they embraced 11 Languages wholeheartedly and showed great appreciation for. The following student attestations 11 Science give a clear view of the success of the initiative: 12 Student Services It was wonderful to meet people who are passionate about their work and have done well 14 Community Announcements in their respective chosen fields. It provided me with the drive to continue to excel in my studies and remain focused on my future endeavours. I learnt heaps about the career opportunities involved in artificial intelligence, especially due to the high priority given to this by Google. Anna - Year 11

I found the incursion really valuable for a few reasons, not just, because the content was extremely interesting in and of itself. The presentation was insightful into what it is like to actually be in that line of work and to the applications of specialized mathematics, with specific examples like monitoring electrical activity in homes to help improve sustainability and matrix use in machine learning being most inspiring. Seeing the actual Eltham High School T (03) 9430 5111 | Python code behind a simple machine learning program, especially after knowing a little ABSENCES: (03) 9430 5299 Python personally, helped bridge the gap between something, which seemed incredibly [email protected] complex and infeasible to something that seems reasonable and possible to achieve for www.elthamhs.vic.edu.au students who work for it.

STUDENT GROWTH AND LEADERSHIP

Lion on a Mission – House Leaders Project The Eltham Lions Club is running a ‘book drive’ for families with young children who do not have access to or can’t afford books for their children. The book drive they are running aims to give these families books for their children, to help and support their learning and childhood growth. The Eltham High School Year 11 and 12 House Leader team has decided to become involved with this great community project, by collecting books for these children and families in need. There will be a bookshelf set up near the General Office at the front of our school, where any appropriate children’s books are welcome to be donated, they will then be passed onto the Eltham Lions Club and distributed to families in need. Interschool Sport Being a school heavily devoted in community involvement and support we are proud to be Futsal engaging in this project and aim to collect several books for many families. Cross Country Skiing Year 11 Outdoor and Environmental Studies - Cross Country Skiing - Lake Mountain Students from the Year 11 Outdoor and Environmental Studies classes travelled to Lake - Lake Mountain Mountain last week to partake in a day of Cross Country Skiing. Meeting at 6:00am at school, students travelled by bus towards Marysville. After a quick stop to pick up our equipment and refuel in the Bakery, we headed up the Mountain. Snow conditions were fantastic as the students took part in lessons, learning how to turn and stop. We continued to venture out on the trails, covering many kilometres before turning for home after lunch. On our way back to the base area, we were blessed with some amazing snow showers. Arriving back at the bus, we were able to change out of our water proof clothing for something more comfortable for the return journey. The bus trip home was certainly very quiet as many students took the opportunity to rest their eyes. A big thank you to the staff who volunteered to assist with our trip - Mr Tim Natoli, Mr Dave Matters and Ms Hannah Allen.

Our students had to investigate, design, produce and evaluate a wooden box for a specific purpose. The students created a design folio with design brief, technical drawings, inspiration and much more. The students then produced the box they had designed, they also evaluated their product and processes at end. They learnt many new skills such as using different saws, using a hammer and various finishing processes just to mention a few. You can see by the photos the end results are amazing.
