There is a wide range of local, state and federal resources available to help landowners. This guide profiles approximately 40 of those resources. However, this is not a comprehensive list and landowners are encouraged to look beyond this reference for additional organizations that may be useful to them. This guide was created as part of the Winooski Headwaters Community Project. The Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District (WNRCD) and the Friends of the Winooski River (FWR) facilitated its creation. FWR and WNRCD want to keep this resource as up to date as possible. Please contact these organizations with feedback, corrections and additions. If you would like to support efforts to protect the Winooski watershed, please support either FWR or WNRCD. Winooski Headwaters Community Project The Winooski Headwaters Community Project is a locally-led effort to restore and protect the upper portion of the Winooski watershed. Its work is directed by the Conservation Commissions of Cabot, Marshfield, and Plainfield. The Friends of the Winooski River and the Winooski Natural Resources Conservation District provide facilitation and staff support. Other partners include local and state government, local businesses, non-profit organizations, and citizens. The partners have emphasized education, cooperation, and community involvement in all their projects. Friends of the Winooski River Friends of the Winooski River is a non-profit organizationdedicated to the restoration and protection of the Winooski River and its tributaries. The organization works on a wide variety of projects including riparian and habitat restoration, water quality monitoring, improving river access and general public education. The Friends works with landowners to help preserve and restore the river corridor running through their property.     2017 Upper Winooski Fisheries Assessment Prepared by Bret Ladago; Fisheries Biologist, Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department The Upper Winooski River watershed is defined in this fisheries assessment as the Winooski River from the headwaters in Cabot downstream to the top of the Bolton Dam in Duxbury. Introduction The Winooski River basin contains a diversity of fish species, many of which support popular recreational fisheries. Most streams within this watershed provide suitable habitat to support naturally reproducing, “wild” trout populations. Wild populations of native brook trout flourish in the colder, higher elevation streams. Lower reaches of some tributaries and much of the mainstem also support naturalized populations of wild rainbow and brown trout. Both species were introduced to Vermont in the late 1800s, rainbow trout from the West coast and brown trout from Europe. Most of the tributary streams of the Winooski River basin are managed as wild trout waters (i.e. are not stocked with hatchery-reared trout). The Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department (VFWD) stocks hatchery-reared brook trout, brown trout or rainbow trout to supplement recreational fisheries in the Winooski River mainstem from Marshfield Village to Bolton Dam, as well as in the North Branch (Worcester to Montpelier) and Mad River (Warren to Moretown) where habitat conditions (e.g. temperature, flows) limit wild trout production. As mainstem conditions vary seasonally, wild trout may reside in these areas during certain times of the year. Naturally reproducing populations of trout have been observed in the upper mainstem of the Winooski as far downstream as Duxbury. Trout from mainstem reaches and larger tributaries may migrate into smaller tributary streams to spawn.

Still, Gussie felt she should check in to see how business was doing. t\ customer seemed near to buying some property and Gusie was anxious to know that Reba had closed the sale. But Reba explained cheerfully that this was really for the best. “I never liked those people anyway,” she said. Reba promised that she would make up for the loss someday and sell the property to a better customer. Reba was someone who came into the office on bitterly cold Saturdays, “because it was just as easy to stay warm while working.” She brought the same frank interest and zeal into a favorite hobby of hers as well - the informal study of her adopted home town of Fayston, Vermont. She spent her childhood on a farm in Lowell, Vermont, though she and her family would later move to Montpelier. After studying at the University of Vermont, she married her husband Alexander, a Scotsman “who could turn his accent on and off like a faucet, because he knew that immigrants were sometimes better off not being immigrants.” In time, she and Alex settled in Center Fayston, in the shadow of the Sam Strong farm.
