  • An Analysis of Hegemonic Social Structures in "Friends"
"I'LL BE THERE FOR YOU" IF YOU ARE JUST LIKE ME: AN ANALYSIS OF HEGEMONIC SOCIAL STRUCTURES IN "FRIENDS" Lisa Marie Marshall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY August 2007 Committee: Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor Audrey E. Ellenwood Graduate Faculty Representative James C. Foust Lynda Dee Dixon © 2007 Lisa Marshall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Katherine A. Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season.

Sagerian ‘13 is the 2014 Burton Award winner for Legal Achievement for his distinguished legal writing. “I’m really at a loss for words,” said Sagerian. “It's truly an honor and incredibly rewarding just to be considered for such a prestigious award. Advocating for those in need is my passion, my calling in the legal profession.” Sagerian was selected in the law student category for his note titled “A Penalty Flag for Preemption: The NFL Concussion Litigation, Tortious Fraud, and the Steel Curtain Defense of Section 301 of the Labor Management Relations act,” published in the Fall 2013, edition of the Thomas Jefferson Law Review. This year, the Burton Awards selection committee handed out 15 law student awards from among all of the nation’s law schools. Sagerian will be honored for his article at an awards ceremony and dinner at the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., on June 9. “Robert joins a distinguished group of TJSL winners of this award,” said Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Linda Keller. “It is wonderful to see the accomplishments of our students recognized in this way.” The Burton Awards, now in its 15th year, was established by William C. In this paper, I investigate what Jason Wirth calls’ Bataille’s “mad game of writing” in order to show that Bataille’s bizarre writing style is actually an extension of his ethical and philosophical commitments. Bataille’s writing attempts to produce a state within the reader rather than simply transmit information. I trace the justifications and roots for such a writing from his own system, as well as showing how such a style of writing has its roots in Kantian aesthetics and in Hegel’s Phenomenology. I live by tangible experience and not by logical explanation. I have of the divine an experience so mad that one will laugh at me if I speak of it.

Case: 1:19-cv-02727 Document #: 28 Filed: 07/19/19 Page 1 of 9 PageID #:335 IN THE UNITED STATES DISTRICT COURT FOR THE NORTHERN DISTRICT OF ILLINOIS EASTERN DIVISION OLABINJO OSUNDAIRO and ABIMBOLA OSUNDAIRO, Individually, Case No. 19-cv-2727 Plaintiffs, v. Honorable Matthew F. Kennelly MARK GERAGOS, TINA GLANDIAN, and GERAGOS & GERAGOS LAW FIRM, Defendants. MEMORANDUM IN SUPPORT OF THE DEFENDANTS’ MOTION FOR SANCTIONS UNDER RULE 11 INTRODUCTION Plaintiffs have blatantly violated Fed. R. Civ. P. 11 by falsely asserting the source of an allegedly defamatory statement, by grossly mischaracterizing a defendant’s statements, and by pursuing a claim for respondeat superior that is not warranted by existing law. Plaintiffs attributed the statement about Plaintiffs’ bodybuilding techniques to Jussie Smollett’s lawyer, Tina Glandian, knowing that it was their own lawyer, Gloria Schmidt, who uttered it to the media.1 Also, in their zeal to drag a well-known lawyer into the case, Plaintiffs mischaracterized Mark Geragos’ statements, and their allegations against him are unfounded in fact. Finally, in an effort to dig into the pockets of Ms. Glandian’s law firm with their frivolous lawsuit, Plaintiffs filed an improper separate claim for respondeat superior. Unfortunately for Plaintiffs, the Illinois Supreme Court and this Court have determined that respondeat superior is not a separate cause of action. Defendants seek an order dismissing Plaintiffs’ baseless claims with prejudice and 1 Ms. Schmidt represents Plaintiffs in this matter. Case: 1:19-cv-02727 Document #: 28 Filed: 07/19/19 Page 2 of 9 PageID #:335 requiring Plaintiffs and their counsel to pay Defendants’ reasonable attorney’s fees and costs incurred in bringing this motion.

  • 305 Gayane Grigoryan Lost Generation: Love and Life
GAYANE GRIGORYAN LOST GENERATION: LOVE AND LIFE FOR A GENERATION OF SOULS LOST IN THE WORLD The Lost Generation defines a sense of moral loss or aimlessness apparent in literary figures during the 1920s. World War I seemed to have destroyed the idea that if you acted virtuously, good things would happen. Many good, young men went to war and died, or returned home either physically or mentally wounded, and their faith in the moral guideposts that had earlier given them hope, were no longer valid...they were lost. The term was popularized by Ernest Hemingway who used it as one of two contrasting epigraphs for his novel The Sun Also Rises. In that volume Hemingway credits the phrase to Gertrude Stein, who was then his mentor and patron1. The status of affairs in America in the years following the First World War spawned a generation of authors termed the lost generation. In response to the political and social atmosphere of the United States these authors sought cultural refuge in European cities. Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald are two prominent authors who followed the path to becoming the lost generation. In their works The Sun Also Rises and Tender Is The Night, listed respectively, Hemingway and Fitzgerald provide works of literature that embody the spirit of the lost generation. Through provision of an account of the lost generation and analysis of Hemingways and Fitzgeralds texts, the textual embodiment of lost generation values will be highlighted. In its most literal definition it would seem as if a lost generation would not have a history.

Eric Biber and Holly Doremus May 20, 2010 Before April 20, most Americans had probably never heard of the Minerals Management Service, the federal agency that oversees oil and gas production in federal waters. Now, with oil from the Deepwater Horizon blowout closing wildlife refuges and fishing grounds in the Gulf of Mexico, the MMS is facing tough questions about its role in the disaster. Its cursory environmental review minimized the prospects of a large spill, and it failed to demand that BP have a realistic response plan in place before drilling. While Congress holds hearings, the Obama administration has announced its intent to split MMS into two agencies — one with responsibility for offshore leasing and development permits, the other for environmental and safety enforcement. That split may be desirable, but it wouldn't be enough to protect workers or fragile coastal environments from another catastrophe. It certainly sounds like the right approach. After all, maximizing oil and gas development — and the revenues they bring to the federal treasury — mix with protecting worker safety and the environment like oil and water.
