  • 2004 Ncaa Championship Recap
2004 NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP RECAP BYU's Fourth Win over 49ers Has Title Ring BYU's top-ranked men's volleyball team captured its third National Collegiate Men's Volleyball Championship since 1999 with a 3-2 victory over Long Beach State May 8 at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. It was the Cougars' second crown in the past four years. It was a hard-fought victory for BYU, which won the match, 15-30, 30-18, 20-30, 32-30, 19-17. Jonathan Alleman's four kills in the fifth game helped put the Cougars over the top. "On the stat sheet they outplayed us," said BYU head coach Tom Peterson. "But, the bottom line is, it just seemed like we had the heart whenever we needed it. The team absolutely did it all at the end, just like they've done all year." Peterson made NCAA history by becoming the first men's coach to win a national championship with two different teams. He previously led Penn State to the title in 1994. BYU ended its season at 29-4, while Long Beach State posted a 28-7 campaign, with four of the losses to the Cougars. Long Beach State quickly cruised to a 30-15 win in game one, but the Cougars gained the momentum in game two. The match swung back toward Long Beach State's favor in game three as the 49ers broke an 11-11 tie and ended the game on a 19-9 run. BYU then extended the match by winning a fourth game that included 13 ties but only two lead changes.

Volleyball NATIONAL COLLEGIATE MEN’S 2011 Championship Highlights Ohio State captures fi rst national title; Buckeyes knock off UC Santa Barbara in fi ve sets to win 2011 championship: Add another title to Ohio State’s championship resume. Shawn Sangrey had a game-high 30 kills and the Buckeyes rallied to beat UC Santa Barbara 20-25, 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 15-9 on May 7 to win their fi rst NCAA men’s volleyball crown. It’s just the third time a team outside of the West has claimed the title. Penn State won in 1994 and 2008. The Gauchos (18-15) trailed 2-1 but took the fourth set in part to stellar play at the net by fi ery leader Jeff Menzel. He fi nished with 12 kills, and Cullen Irons had 16. But Ohio State (26-6) closed the match with a 5-0 run, capped by a block on Menzel that started the Buckeyes’ party in Happy Valley. UC Santa Barbara had put together a surprising postseason run that included back-to-back wins against top-ranked Southern California. The Gauchos had said all week they play their best when faced with elimination, and they came close to proving it again. The Buckeyes were pushed to the limit and responded in the fi nal set. Sangrey’s powerful right arm overwhelmed the Gauchos, and setter Steven Kehoe deftly set up the off ense with 65 assists. Kehoe won the tournament Most Outstanding Player award. The Buckeyes celebrated by singing the Ohio State alma mater in front of more than four dozen red-clad fans, rocking back and forth in unison while wearing their new black championship hats.

DIVISION I 139 Volleyball NATIONAL COLLEGIATE 2001 Championship Highlights Cougars Crowned: Brigham Young upset 18-time champion and perennial favorite UCLA to claim its second championship in three years. The Cougars downed the Bruins 30-26, 30-26, and 32-30 in front of a crowd of 4,807 at the Pyramid in Long Beach, California. It is only the third time in the history of the championship that a non- California team has won the title. Using the new rally-scoring format with games to 30 points, both teams had ample opportunity to seize the match. But the Cougars managed to stay one step ahead of the Bruins. Hector Lebron’s accuracy at the setter position fueled Mike Wall and Joaquin Acosta on the offense for Brigham Young. UCLA’s block could not withstand the pounding. And any attempt the Bruins made to return VOLLEYBALL fire was stymied by the Cougars’ almost impenetrable defensive wall. All-tournament team: Jose Quinones of Penn State, Adam Naeve and Scott Morrow from UCLA, and Hector Lebron, Joaquin Acosta and Mike Wall of Brigham Young. Wall was also named the most out- standing player of the tournament. TOURNAMENT PERCENTAGE LEADERS Player, Team K E TA *Pct.
