rough theatre and visual art, Artscape eatre Centre in the past years has mastered the art of bringing together all the people of South Africa, with particular development of those rooted in the Western Cape. eatre manages to shift mind-sets, build confi dence and bring forth a sense of inclusiveness as a result of its interactive nature. We know it is part of human nature to feel the need to examine who we are in relation to where we are, consequently, basic elements of theatre and drama exist in every society and what better tool than to communicate through dramatic arts. e Centre strongly believes in Youth development, Education and Development in general and as a result the programmes stretch out as far as the rural communities bringing enjoyment to those who would not otherwise experience theatre. We have the opportunity to bring life to community theatre dreams, to give youth a chance to perform on a professional stage and to educate hundreds of learners through Set Work productions. We open our doors to all members of the public to provide a world-class experience in our building while watching a professional theatre production. We are confi dent that 2018 will be a productive year! Thoko Ntshinga Director: IAU

Unmute Dance Theatre Company New Associate Company e Company came into existence in 2013 after a performance creation entitled ‘Unmute’. Unmute was the fi rst ensemble choreographic piece by Andile Vellem. It was based on his experience as a dancer who is deaf. He has been dancing professionally for more than 13 years. Unmute was a way of Andile fi nding his voice as a choreographer, using sign language as the source of the movement vocabulary. He brought together artists from diff erent backgrounds to fi nd and explore what they would like to unmute; feelings, perceptions, social norms and expectations; while endeavouring to deconstruct what society perceives as dance. e inception of the company then developed in 2014 after a successful run of the Unmute production. e Company was part of the Artscape Incubator Programme, which enhanced their Arts administration skills with regard to understanding how to plan activities properly, budgeting, understanding company structure/organogram, bookkeeping, writing proposals and planning events. Artscape will be further enhancing their capabilities to evolve into a fully- fl edged In House Company. Artscape has also supported the Company with project funding for the Annual ArtsAbility Festival celebrating International Week of Disability. Unmute has also been a regular participating Company for the past two years at our Annual Rural Outreach Project.

Artéma Artéma is the Institute for Arts Management and Development at the North-West University. It is the first institute of its kind in South Africa that serves the Arts in collaboration with as many role players as possible by training managers and administrators in the Arts. Artéma’s training activities are continuously aimed at communities and development since the majority of activities focus on people involved with the management of community arts organisations. e training approach followed by Artéma entails the practice-based compilation of courses/ workshops in order to take it to those individuals in need of training. Our goal is to train people from grass-roots level upwards and not vice versa. After attending our courses, people should be empowered to go back to their communities and make a positive difference since that is where the primary need of basic expertise and management skills in the arts environment lies. Without these skills, access to funding on grass-roots level will be nearly impossible and without funding or basic knowledge to ensure sustainability, the arts community will suffer.
