However, due to many interesting digressions during the evening, the expose lasted over 3 hours! During that time, Graeme covered such topics as the danger of over-consumption of sugar and how is has been linked to dental decay and gum disease; heart disease; osteoporosis; premature ageing; overweight and obesity; candid; depression; Chorines disease and ulcerative colitis; diabetes; decreased absorption of calcium and magnesium; fatigue; immune suppression; reproductive cancers and an inability to build muscle. Long term studies into ageing and what it takes to become a centenarian have revealed that the key common denominator is low insulin levels. Ph: 50VET After ten years of planning, Darren’s dream is now a Reality Darren Bates’ father Brian, began ‘ADVANCE’ Fishing and Cruising in Norfolk Island back in 1983. The Shark Cat he ran, designed by professional fisherman Bruce Harris, was a big strong fiberglass boat of 7 metres, with unheard of stability and an incredibly soft ride. This design is used by abalone divers, drop line fishermen and the Australian Coastguard Sea Rescue. ‘ADVANCE’ ( named after an historic locally- built whaling vessel), ran successfully for many years, before being inherited by Darren, who at 16 years of age, barely looked old enough to be out of school! Working closely and inspired heavily by his father and close family friend Italian and accomplished mariner Ian Kenny, Darren built the business into one of the safest, reliable and reputable Ristorante charters on the Island. Meticulously maintaining ‘ADVANCE’ and changing from Honda to Yamaha outboards just last year, Darren had been aspiring to a boat that he could customise to our Island’s needs and began plans for Pizzeria such a boat back around 1998 when he first contacted Wayne Hennig of Noosa Cat. Wayne (also Hennig Motorsports), had taken over and improved the old Shark Cat production, creating a new range of high quality boats for an expanding international and domestic market. With some persuasion, the already great Noosa Cat 3100 model, was adapted, creating a boat absolutely unique to Norfolk Island, the first of its kind. There’s even a pop up dining/ card table and mini galley facilities for on board cooking . Unloading ‘ADVANCE 2’ off the cargo vessel ‘Norfolk Guardian’ was a unique task in itself. The ‘Guardian’ travelled 3 days in open seas from Yamba to Norfolk to be met by the local lads of Norfolk’s lighterage team, who put on hold their normal jobs to “unload the ship”. This time they were met by the front and centre ‘ADVANCE 2’! After some arrangement of temporary chain lifting gear, by family member and engineer Basil, she was lifted free of her stainless steel trailer and at last, after 10 years of planning, touched Norfolk waters. Brian and Ian, who both passed away recently, leave big shoes to fill, but Darren and his family know that they are at sea with them always, to bless them with their knowledge and good humour. Letter to the editor - continued Dear Sir, I was stunned by the Ministerial Statement in NORFOLK ISLAND BUILDING SUPPLIES relation to Norfolk Air this week. Maybe I was lulled into complacency by assurances from the current Government that all was fine. After all they had just negotiated an arrangement with a new aircraft provider and the responsible Minister had just indicated that he was giving away some $450,000. Although I must N.I.B.S admit that they keep talking of this Global Economic NEW CASCADE ROAD • 22065 Downturn which mustn’t be too bad down town with a Government of five Ministers and of course they readily increased their own wage. Minister Christian has just returned from yet another trip and low and behold the Minister sees a need to reduce Norfolk Air services. Why has the Minister just woken up to the fact that this is a “traditional low season”. Hasn’t he just said that he has negotiated a New Arrivals really good deal with - “Our or is it Their Airline” ? We were to believe the new service would be similar to that of our previous contract provider Oz Jet, except Rugs the aircraft would be better. Not much good if they don’t fly. Oh yes, we are told things are different - the Global Economic Downturn has been a real factor. Yes and Mats it has - since 2007. The Minister referred to the Airline reserves. He suggested these were accumulated over the better Rollaway Beds tourism months from October to May to fund the losses in maintaining a full schedule between June and with mattress September and this hasn’t happened this year. The Minister should be required to take personal account for the real reserves. When Norfolk Air was initiated the then Government was mindful of the difficulties that may be encountered. The Australian Dining Suites Government understood our position and proposed a delay in commencement of the loan repayment to provide a reserve of funds to support possible problems with Norfolk Air. Fortunately Norfolk Air was able to support itself and the savings accumulated until HITACHI recent times. Now it appears all these available funds designed to support the airline have gone. They just could not resist syphoning off these funds and now we have nothing left. The establishment of Norfolk Air as a company as proposed would have secured the funds but no, it would have made it difficult to syphon them off. My estimate is that at least $6 million has been expended to date on the airport activities above normal maintenance. Would be nice to be provided with the actual figures and of course how the funds were disbursed under a claimed open contractual arrangement. Forget about the letters of support from beneficiaries, the self interest and the “I can do this and I can do that” baloney - get back to the benefits to the island, I would suggest the real community should be past being conned. Sad isn’t it - all that self proclaimed vision and all that spin. Where are we now? Yours etc., Ron Nobbs Letters to the Editor - continued Pitcairn has internet, telephone services, and a Dear Sir, museum loaded with relics from HMS Bounty. Credit where credit is due.
