    E-Newsletter - Vol-VI Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs Government of India E-Newsletter:Vol-VI LIGHT HOUSE PROJECTS July 5, 2021, New Delhi Hon’ble Prime Minister Reviews Progress of Light House Projects via Drones Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi reviewed the progress of six Light House Projects (LHPs) being constructed across six locations in India via video conference on 3rd July 2021. The model housing project is an initiative under Global Housing Technology Challenge-India (GHTC-India) of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban). Shri Durga Shanker Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Shri Amrit Abhijat, Joint Secretary & Mission Director (JS&MD), Housing for All (HFA), and senior officials from the Central and State governments were also present at the review meeting. The Hon’ble Prime Minister was briefed about the project and technology being used at each LHP site through a presentation after which the review was done via drones. Six short videos of the production facility/casting yards of the building components, where the manufacturing units are located, were also shown at the meeting. LHPs are located at Chennai (Tamil Nadu), Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh), Rajkot (Gujarat), Indore (Madhya Pradesh), Agartala (Tripura) and Ranchi (Jharkhand). The foundation stones of the six projects were laid by Hon’ble Prime Minister on 1st January 2021. LHP at Chennai uses ‘Precast Concrete Construction System-Precast Components Assembled at Site’. The one at Lucknow uses ‘Stay-In-Place PVC Formwork with Pre-Engineered Steel Structural System’; ‘Monolithic Concrete Construction using Tunnel Formwork’ is the technology being used for construction at Rajkot; at Indore, ‘Prefabricated Sandwich Panel System with Pre-engineered Steel Structural System’ is being used; ‘Light Gauge Steel Framed (LGSF) System with Pre-engineered Steel Structural System’ is being used at Agartala and at LHP Ranchi, ‘Precast Concrete Construction System–3D Volumetric’ has been adopted.

The 8-floor project with a total of eight towers is expected to be completed within a year. BMTPC is in its 28th year of service to nation with a commitment to promote sustainable building materials and construction systems. In this journey of promotion of innovative systems other than conventional brick & mortar/RCC framed construction, BMTPC had to work really hard with rejuvenated efforts several times so as to bring paradigm shift in use of innovations in the construction sector. Also, with the launch of PMAY(U) in June 2015, the quest to bring innovative construction systems around the globe which can not only fast track delivery of quality sustainable houses but also comply with structural, functional and safety norms stipulated in Indian Standards gained importance. Further, in order to accomplish the ardent task of providing houses to each household by 75th year of independence under PMAY(U), the best construction practices which are time tested and proven elsewhere need to be identified, studied, evaluated & certified so that they can be straight- way transplanted to suit Indian geo-climatic conditions.

The Challenge will support cities across the country to develop a unified vision of streets for people in consultation with stakeholders and citizens. The Challenge aims to create flagship walking initiatives in cities which focus on placemaking and liveability. Cities will be required to reimagine their streets as public spaces through the lens of economic regeneration, safety, and child-friendly interventions, in order to ensure a green recovery from COVID-19. The India Programme of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) will be the knowledge partner, providing guidance through the preparation of resource material and facilitating online peer-to-peer learning workshops.     INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE Re-imagining Urban Childhoods [ CONFERENCE REPORT ] Collective thinking on ‘Child Friendly Cities’ ABOUT THE CONFERENCE BvLF and CFSC(NIUA) jointly organized an international conference,‘Re-imagining Urban Childhoods’ to gain insights from experts on various aspects of child friendly cities. Thriving and happy children are indicators of a healthy and sustainable society with high levels of well-being. Children form an understanding of their environment through everyday discoveries and encounters in the park, at school, during a stroll in a neighbourhood street or imagining and inventing games and stories every day. Thus, built environment plays a crucial role in shaping children’s narratives of the city, and their understanding and experience of urban spaces. Growing up in the cities is as complex as it is exciting, with multitudes of stimuli scattered in these every- day experiences of children. While there are plenty of opportunities, the urban environment is also wrought with threats that impact the overall growth and development of a child. A well-planned and sensitively designed built environment can be a powerful force to facilitate positive and holistic development of children and pave way for delivering their rights to live safely, access education, and enjoy everyday freedoms. While this is being acknowledged by a number of cities, the momentum has to be built to enable a paradigm shift towards an urban development agenda that takes into account the needs of children that comprise approximately one third of the residents of any Indian city. This Conference was organized by the Child Friendly Smart Cities initiative of National Institute of Urban Affairs with twin objectives of disseminating the knowledge gathered over four years as well as providing a platform for urban local bodies, urban planners and policy makers to learn from successful city level plans and projects that have been responsive to needs of children from across the world.
