    Bellini’s Norma - A discographical survey by Ralph Moore There are around 130 recordings of Norma in the catalogue of which only ten were made in the studio. The penultimate version of those was made as long as thirty-five years ago, then, after a long gap, Cecilia Bartoli made a new recording between 2011 and 2013 which is really hors concours for reasons which I elaborate in my review below. The comparative scarcity of studio accounts is partially explained by the difficulty of casting the eponymous role, which epitomises bel canto style yet also lends itself to verismo interpretation, requiring a vocalist of supreme ability and versatility. Its challenges have thus been essayed by the greatest sopranos in history, beginning with Giuditta Pasta, who created the role of Norma in 1831. Subsequent famous exponents include Maria Malibran, Jenny Lind and Lilli Lehmann in the nineteenth century, through to Claudia Muzio, Rosa Ponselle and Gina Cigna in the first part of the twentieth. Maria Callas, then Joan Sutherland, dominated the role post-war; both performed it frequently and each made two bench-mark studio recordings. Callas in particular is to this day identified with Norma alongside Tosca; she performed it on stage over eighty times and her interpretation casts a long shadow over. Artists since, such as Gencer, Caballé, Scotto, Sills, and, more recently, Sondra Radvanovsky have had success with it, but none has really challenged the supremacy of Callas and Sutherland. Now that the age of expensive studio opera recordings is largely over in favour of recording live or concert performances, and given that there seemed to be little commercial or artistic rationale for producing another recording to challenge those already in the catalogue, the appearance of the new Bartoli recording was a surprise, but it sought to justify its existence via the claim that it authentically reinstates the integrity of Bellini’s original concept in matters such as voice categories, ornamentation and instrumentation.

  • Verdi's La Forza Del Destino
    Verdi’s La forza del destino - A survey of the studio and selected live recordings by Ralph Moore Despite its musical quality, variety and sophistication, La forza del destino is something of an Ugly Duckling among Verdi’s mature works, and it is for that reason that I did not survey it when I previously covered most of Verdi’s major and most popular operas. It suffers from a sprawling structure whereby succeeding scenes can seem disjointed, some peculiar motivation, an excess of disguise, an uncertain tone resulting from an uneasy admixture of the tragic and the would-be comical, and the presence of two characters with whom, for different reasons, it is difficult to empathise. Don Carlo suffers from a pathological obsession with revenge resulting in his stabbing his own sister as an “honour killing”; his implacable bloodlust is both bizarre and deeply repugnant, while Preziosilla must be one of the most vapid and irritating cheerleaders in opera. “Rataplan, rataplan” – rum-ti-tum on the drum, indeed; it takes a special singer to transcend the banality of her music but it can be done. Although it is just about possible to argue that guilt and shame are at the root of their behaviour, it is mostly inexplicable to modern audiences that Alvaro and Leonora separate after her father’s accidental death and never again try to reunite until they meet again by chance – or fate - in the last scene set five years later. Verdi attempts to lighten the relentlessly grim mood by the inclusion of a supposedly comic character in Fra Melitone who often isn’t very funny – and what is the point of Trabuco, a superfluous peddler? Finally, what the heck is an Incan prince doing in Seville, anyway? While fully aware of its failings, I have returned to La forza del destino because it contains some marvellous music and the kinds of emotional turmoil and dramatic confrontation which lie at the heart of opera.

    Cilea’s Adriana Lecouvreur - A Partial Survey of the Discography by Ralph Moore Of nearly seventy extant recordings of this opera, a mere four have been made in the studio, so choice in that regard is limited, especially as most punters would regretfully concede that the last studio recording – made fully thirty years ago – is not in the running, as the pair of veteran singers who made it, Joan Sutherland and Carlo Bergonzi, were sadly both past their prime. Everything since has been live; especially commendable are performances by that fine singer Nelly Miricioiu but they are mostly in poor to average sound and available only on websites which make copies of “private” recordings to order. The first recording was made in 1949 and is thus in relatively primitive, vintage sound; that leaves the field open to only two studio, stereo versions conducted by Capuana and Levine respectively. Fortunately, both of those are superb; we can cast our net wider by including some excellent, live, mono recordings starring singers of the calibre of Olivero, Corelli, Scotto, Caballé, Domingo and Carreras, but inevitably compromises have to be made regarding the quality of their sound. Critics have been exceptionally patronising about the music and I am amused by the number of times I have read the death-sentence pronounced upon this verismo opera as an absurd, cheesy, one-tune vocal slug-fest, yet it remains a perennial favourite amongst some opera cognoscenti and great singer-actresses, and it is still possible to find tenors who want to sing the relatively ungrateful role of Maurizio.

    Verdi’s Don Carlo: a partial survey of the discography by Ralph Moore Introduction The CLOR discography lists 165 recordings of Don Carlo (or should that be Don Carlos? - more of that anon). A couple of live recordings in German were made before the first one in Italian, live from the Met 1950, with a cast headed by Jussi Bjőrling, then there was a whole slew of live and radio recordings throughout the 50’s from the Met and various Italian opera houses, punctuated by the first studio account conducted by Santini in Rome in 1954, with a stellar (and Stella) cast including Gobbi and Christoff. This still stands up remarkably well despite its age and some casting weakness. Santini was again at the helm for the next studio recording in 1961 with an even finer cast, then Solti recorded the Five Act version for Decca in 1965. For so great and popular an opera, Don Carlo has received very few studio recordings; Giulini followed in 1971, Karajan in 1978, Abbado in 1983-84, Levine in 1992 and Haitink in 1996. Only Abbado’s was in French, and Richard Farnes recorded an English version for Chandos in 2009. Thus, so far, we have had a grand total of only nine studio versions: seven in Italian, one in English and only one of the original French version, yet the catalogue is teeming with live performances. No survey can encompass so many, nor have I considered DVDs. However, I assess below some twenty-seven audio accounts, having restricted my choice to the nine studio recordings plus a sampling of live performances, including the three live recordings of original Five Act versions in French; the rest are variously either of the Four or Five Act versions in Italian.

    Mascagni’s Cavalleria rusticana A survey of the major studio recordings in Italian by Ralph Moore Cavalleria rusticana is the slightly elder brother of another classic, Pagliacci; the two operas are almost invariably paired for an evening’s entertainment and have a great deal in common. Together, “Cav ’n’ Pag” are credited with being in the vanguard of the verismo movement which changed the face of Italian opera for ever. Cavalleria isn’t quite as violent, insofar as Pagliacci culminates in two on-stage murders, whereas the demise of the anti-hero Turiddù, although it is once again the result of a stabbing, occurs off-stage and is announced to that audience via the blood-curdling scream of a horrified spectator, “Hanno ammazzato compare Turiddù!”(“Friend Turiddù’s been murdered!”). It is perhaps, even more melodic and possessed of an even more beautiful Intermezzo than Pagliacci, but both depict the lives of southern Italian “everyday country folk” in the Mezzogiorno going to church, drinking and celebrating, loving and quarrelling – and both have adultery as the spur to the plotline. However, the importance of the soprano and tenor lead roles is reversed: in Pagliacci, Nedda’s personality is fairly sketchily drawn and the focus is more upon Canio as a jealous husband – justifiably as it turns out - whereas in Cavalleria, Santuzza takes central stage. Nor is there a real villain as such in Cavalleria - unless it is Turiddù himself, who seduces and abandons one woman, only to move on to an affair with another, married woman. The preservation of the classical dramatic unities of time, place and action, in combination with ordinariness of the characters and the words they speak, consolidates the opera’s veristic nature.

    DECCA DISCOGRAPHY >>I ITALY & Monte Carlo Until the mid-1960s it was taken for granted that the place to record Italian opera was Italy. After a few sessions in Milan (lost to EMI in 1954) and a recording with the Turin Symphony Orchestra during a visit to London in 1947 (AR11722-47), Decca settled on Rome from 1950-70, plus Florence from 1955- 63, with an excursion to Naples in 1964. Monte Carlo followed from 1967-69 and Bologna from 1973-77, but by then London had become the world’s capital for recording operas, whether Italian, French, German or English. Del Monaco was the reigning tenor from 1952-69 and Tebaldi the reigning soprano from 1951-73. Their successors Pavarotti (1964-99) and Sutherland (1959-87) recorded mainly in London and regular sessions in Italy only resumed with Chailly, in Bologna from 1986-93 and Milan since 1995. In the twenty-first century opera recording in Italy has regained something of the status it enjoyed fifty years earlier, though both Bartoli (from 1988) and Flórez (from 1998) have also recorded extensively elsewhere. >RVI VENUES Thirty-eight different venues were used, but only four (those in bold ) hosted ten or more entries, whilst twenty-one were only visited once. Evidently finding satisfactory locations in Bologna and Milan proved difficult. Singers will work on arias and ensembles of the Italian belcanto repertoire and Verdi. All singers and conductors will perform with the Varna State Opera Orchestra at a final concert in the Varna State Opera House on Saturday, September 5.
