GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF LIBERIA 2008 NATIONAL POPULATION AND HOUSING CENSUS: PRELIMINARY RESULTS LIBERIA INSTITUTE OF STATISTICS AND GEO-INFORMATION SERVICES (LISGIS) MONROVIA, LIBERIA JUNE 2008 FOREWORD Post-war socio-economic planning and development of our nation is a pressing concern to my Government and its development partners. Such an onerous undertaking cannot be actualised with scanty, outdated and deficient databases. Realising this limitation, and in accordance with Article 39 of the 1986 Constitution of the Republic of Liberia, I approved, on May 31, 2007, “An Act Authorizing the Executive Branch of Government to Conduct the National Census of the Republic of Liberia”. The country currently finds itself at the crossroads of a major rehabilitation and reconstruction. Virtually every aspect of life has become an emergency and in resource allocation, crucial decisions have to be taken in a carefully planned and sequenced manner. The publication of the Preliminary Results of the 2008 National Population and Housing Census and its associated National Sampling Frame (NSF) are a key milestone in our quest towards rebuilding this country. Development planning, using the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS), decentralisation and other government initiatives, will now proceed into charted waters and Government’s scarce resources can be better targeted and utilized to produce expected dividends in priority sectors based on informed judgment. We note that the statistics are not final and that the Final Report of the 2008 Population and Housing Census will require quite sometime to be compiled. In the interim, I recommend that these provisional statistics be used in all development planning for and in the Republic of Liberia. -

Wings Mission Trip to Liberia – January 2020!
Wings Mission Trip to Liberia – January 2020! Africa Africa Liberia Liberia Wings For LIFE International is planning a mission trip to Liberia, Africa in January 2020. We will host prison and community Family Days and trainings in prisons, orphanages, churches, and slums. We will fly into Monrovia and our full itinerary will be posted as soon as it is completed. Raymond Bombo is the Wings For LIFE International – Liberia Executive Director. He has already hosted a Christmas and an Easter Community Family Day. In November he plans to start our educational program, Wings For L.I.F.E. – Life-skills Imparted to Families through Education. We will go and do in-person training not only for him, but his Board of Directors, other leaders in Liberia, and others we meet along our journey. TEAM MEMBERS will need the following: A calling to go to Liberia and help me with this mission. Like to take photos? Lead daily devotions? Be the team “Doctor” or “Nurse”? Team cheerleader? Logistics coordinator? Personal funding to cover the costs of the trip. General good health and personal stamina. A willingness for adventure, new culinary treats, and a desire to meet others who want to help families of prisoners, people behind bars, and the ‘least of these’. I will need to raise funds to help cover my way, and also to pay for costs for Liberian team members, American team members if we raise enough, and supplies for the trip. 1. All donations given to Wings are tax deductible. 2. If more money is raised or donated to Wings than is actually needed by an individual to cover their costs or the whole team’s cost, all money remains with Wings and can’t be returned to the donor. -

Toe, Land Policy and Program Development Officer. The Technical Secretariat extends its profound appreciation and gratitude to Chairman Brandy and other Commissioners of the LC for their unflinching support to this undertaking from the inception stage to the conclusion. We also acknowledge with thanks, the vital role played by Mrs. Guglielma da Passano, UN-Habitat Technical Advisor to the Land Commission in providing editorial guidance and useful feed- back during the entire exercise. Zoe The Louis Arthur Grimes School of Law University of Liberia, Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa Introduction The topic under discussion brings to mind that since all nations form part of an artificial sphere on whose surface is drawn a map of the earth , the attempt by man to gather all business activities of human kind in a round mass as a unit in the global village is indeed possible. Therefore, Laws enacted to regulate business activities must be of international standard to ensure that corporations, be it foreign or domestic, conform to generally accepted international practices without negatively impacting on the environment in which they operate. Notwithstanding the obligation imposed on corporations of contemporary Liberia to ensure that they practice international business transactions within their respective designated environment without causing any impairment to the environment of operation, there are few cases involving foreign corporations whose presence in Liberia have somehow caused some impairment to their designated environment and as a result, the country suffered the loss of both human lives and property. The case of the erstwhile National Iron Ore Company (NIOC), then operating in the Mano River Area, the erstwhile Liberia Mining Company (LMC), then operating in Bomi County, the erstwhile Liberia American Mining Company (LAMCO),then operating in both Buchanan, Grand Bassa County and Yekepa, Nimba County and the Firestone Rubber Plantation Company are few of the several multinational corporations whose operations are being made subjects for discussion. Moreover, the discussion of the environment and the ecosystem services being relevant, we will however make same a subject for discussion to cover trade and environment. -

The criticised business behaviour and practices of AML demonstrate that the company does not ensure that its operations in Liberia are in harmony with OECD Guidelines aims to strengthen the basis of mutual confidence between enterprises and the societies in which they operate, to help improve the foreign investment climate and to enhance the contribution to sustainable development made by multinational enterprises. -
