Click here for the series schedule 2020 MLB FIRST-YEAR PLAYER DRAFT The Giants had seven picks in the abbreviated five-round 2020 MLB First-Year Player Draft held last week. Get to know some more about each of the picks below. The San Francisco Giants selected catcher Patrick Bailey (North Carolina State) with the 13th overall selection in the 2020 First-Year Player Draft. The 6-foot-2, 207-pound junior hit .296 with a team-leading six home runs and 20 RBI over 17 games (16 starts) during the 2020 season, which was cut short due to COVID-19. Despite the shortened season, Bailey ranked tied for second in RBI (20), third in walks (17) and tied for fourth in home runs (6) among all ACC players. Three of Bailey’s six homers in 2020 were grand slams, which he hit over an 11-day span; the first against Tennessee Tech on February 22, the second against Iowa on February 28 and the third against Coastal Carolina on March 4. As a sophomore in 2019, Bailey was named First Team All-ACC, ABCA All-Region and Collegiate Baseball Third Team All-American after compiling a .288 clip with 68 hits, 17 doubles, 10 homers and a .513 slugging percent- age. Bailey was also one of 14 semifinalists for the Buster Posey Award, given to the nation’s best catcher. In 2018, Bailey led all ACC freshmen in hitting (.321), total bases (113) and slugging (.604) while also setting a new NC State freshman home run record (13) on his way to being named the ACC Freshman of the Year. He also threw out 11 runners on the basepaths and recorded a .983 fielding percentage. The switch-hitter homered from both sides of the plate in the same game twice in his career at NC State. Once as a freshman vs. William and Mary and again this past February vs. Iowa. No other player in program history has achieved the feat even once. The Greensboro, N.C. native has been a part of three different USA teams as he played for the U.S. Col- legiate National Team in both 2018 and 2019, in addition to playing for the 2016 18U National Team that won a gold medal at the COPABE Pan Am “AAA” Championships in Mexico. PATRICK C Bailey is the ninth first-round pick in NC State history and is tied for the second-highest drafted player out of BAILEY NC State in the regular June Draft. While at NC State, Bailey was teammates with Giants prospect Will Wilson, NC STATE who was originally drafted by the Angels as the 15th overall pick in 2019. RND 1 PICK #13 Bailey was originally drafted out of Wesleyan Christian Academy, his North Carolina high school, in the 37th round by the Twins in 2017. He and Wil Myers are the only two players to be drafted out of Wesleyan. In his senior year of high school, Bailey led Wesleyan to a second consecutive North Carolina independent schools state championship, batting .510 with five home runs and 33 RBIs in 28 games. With their second selection (49th overall), the San Francisco Giants selected 3B Casey Schmitt out of San Diego State. The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder hit .323 with four doubles and nine RBI in 16 games and recorded six saves as the Aztecs closer in the shortened 2020 season.

Believe: The Story of the 2005 Chicago White Sox" By David J. Fletcher, CBM President Posted Sunday, April 12, 2015 Disheartened White Sox fans, who are disappointed by the White Sox slow start in 2015, can find solace in Sunday night’s television premiere of “Believe: The Story of the 2005 Chicago White Sox" that airs on Sunday night April 12th at 7pm on Comcast Sports Net Chicago. Produced by the dynamic CSN Chi- cago team of Sarah Lauch and Ryan Believe: The Story of the 2005 Chicago White Sox will air McGuffey, "Believe" is an emotional on Sunday, Apr. 12 at 7:00pm CT, on Comcast Sportsnet. roller-coaster-ride of a look at a key season in Chicago baseball history that even the casual baseball fan will enjoy because of the story—a star-crossed team cursed by the 1919 Black Sox—erases 88 years of failure and wins the 2005 World Series championship. Lauch and McGuffey deliver an extraordinary historical documentary that includes fresh interviews with all the key participants, except pitcher Mark Buehrle who declined. “Mark respectfully declined multiple interview requests. (He) wanted the focus to be on his current season,” said McGuffey. Lauch did reveal “that Buehrle’s wife saw the film trailer on the Thursday (April 9th) and loved it.” Primetime Emmy & Tony Award winner, current star of Showtime’s acclaimed drama series “Homeland”, and lifelong White Sox fan Mandy Patinkin, narrates the film in an under-stated fashion that retains a hint of his Southside roots and loyalties. The 76 minute-long “Believe” features all of the signature

No part of this book may be distributed, posted, or reproduced in any form by digital or mechanical means without prior written permission of the publisher. CHAPTER 1 Fair Ball! Why Adjustments Are Needed King Arthur’s quest for it in the Middle Ages became a large part of his legend. Monty Python and Indiana Jones launched their searches in popular 1974 and 1989 movies. The mythic quest for the Holy Grail, the name given in Western tradition to the chal- ice used by Jesus Christ at his Passover meal the night before his death, is now often a metaphor for a quintessential search. In the illustrious history of baseball, the “holy grail” is a ranking of each player’s overall value on the baseball diamond. Because player skills are multifaceted, it is not clear that such a ranking is possible. In comparing two players, you see that one hits home runs much better, whereas the other gets on base more often, is faster on the base paths, and is a better fielder. So which player should rank higher? In Baseball’s All-Time Best Hitters, I identified which players were best at getting a hit in a given at-bat, calling them the best hitters. Many reviewers either disapproved of or failed to note my definition of “best hitter.” Although frequently used in base- ball writings, the terms “good hitter” or best hitter are rarely defined. In a July 1997 Sports Illustrated article, Tom Verducci called Tony Gwynn “the best hitter since Ted Williams” while considering only batting average.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Holy Toledo Lessons From Bill King Renaissance Man of the Mic by Ken Korach Big League Life: Five Questions with… Oakland Athletics Broadcaster Ken Korach. This is the fourth piece in a series of posts centered on life inside professional baseball. March 3 0 marks the eve of Opening Day in Major League Baseball as well as the release of my third book, a novel titled Big League Life . While a work of fiction, this story is the result of years of research about and interview with the men and women who make the “big league life” their life. Many people contributed to the realism of the characters woven into this story and one of those individuals is the subject of today’s “Five Questions with…” post, longtime Oakland Athletics broadcaster Ken Korach. The drama of a Major League Baseball game centers on the performances of athletes competing on the playing field. However, you can’t unstitch the greatest moments in baseball history from the broadcasters that are connected forever with those moments. Is the “shot heard ‘round the world” remembered as clearly today without Russ Hodges’ iconic narration? Does Sandy Koufax’s Perfect Game in 1965 resonate the same way without Vin Scully’s masterful call? Scan through baseball’s archives and you will, undoubtedly, find coupled with every moment a call made by the game’s best broadcasters. Not always beautiful, not always perfect. Each, however, honest, emotional, and timeless in its own way. Red Barber. Dave Neihaus. Ernie Harwell. Harry Kalas. The list goes on and on and it continues to grow today as history unfolds before our very eyes.
