PP-PFE-GBR-0391 March 2017 Driving Global Competitiveness of the UK’s Life Sciences Ecosystem Page | 4 Executive summary Key findings The UK Government seeks to become a globally-unique and internationally competitive life sciences ecosystem that delivers health and wealth and supports NHS transformation. This analysis revealed that workforce & skills, academic & leading edge science and access to medicines are the three most important ecosystem factors in achieving this vision. The UK is globally competitive in academic & leading edge science and workforce & skills, it is in- line with other leading countries in fiscal incentives and clinical trials infrastructure, but lagging behind significantly in access to medicines. This analysis found that UK patients have significantly lower uptake of new medicines (up to 75% by volume per capita) in their first year of launch. It then takes on average almost two years to catch up with the next lowest uptake country. Even with NICE approval and ‘novel’ designation UK patients have up to 64% lower uptake (by volume per capita). If the UK reduces this “access gap” in new medicines available to patients it could better support growth in the life sciences ecosystem: 4000 new jobs could be created by 2021 and £705m in Gross Value Added (GVA) realised each year. It could also stimulate healthcare improvements for patients, support NHS transformation and UK R&D. As well as generating job and economic value, this would revise the current situation where the UK has a strong record in developing some of the world’s cutting edge medicines but patients in the UK have significantly less access to new medicines than in other countries with strong life science hubs. Looking forwards, NHS challenges, the need for cost containment and the unique strengths of the NHS, such as universal healthcare free at the point of delivery, must be recognised. This analysis has identified opportunities to collaborate across the health system and industry to improve access to new medicines and support cost containment through: Agreeing an aspiration to improve patient uptake of new medicines (e.g. bringing the UK broadly in line with comparable peers based on GDP per capita, population and health system dynamics such as France and Germany, by 2021), and Exploring a range of approaches such as the adoption of innovative pricing models, that support both patient access to new medicines and NHS cost containment. This report aims to provide a useful basis for further discussions on how this successful life sciences sector can continue to drive UK innovation, health and economic benefit, into the future.     April 2014 Voriconazole (Vfend®): risk of phototoxicity, skin squamous cell carcinoma and liver toxicity – introducing tools to manage these risks. Dear Healthcare Professional Pfizer, in collaboration with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and MHRA would like to inform you of the following: Summary Voriconazole is associated with a risk of phototoxicity and skin squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). It is therefore important to adhere to the advice on the precautions against phototoxic reactions and monitoring for SCC given in the product information. If phototoxic reactions occur, refer the patient to consult a dermatologist and consider stopping voriconazole treatment If voriconazole treatment is continued despite a phototoxic reaction, the skin should be checked frequently and thoroughly to detect and manage pre- cancerous lesions as early as possible. Stop voriconazole treatment if pre- cancerous skin lesions or SSC are identified Voriconazole is also associated with a risk of liver toxicity. Advice on monitoring liver function in the product information has been revised. It is also important to adhere to this advice. Further information Voriconazole is an antifungal medicine used to treat adults and children over the age of two years with worsening, possibly life-threatening fungal infections. A risk minimization programme has been developed to help manage the aforementioned risks in all patients, including children, taking voriconazole. NOT FOR PUBLICATION OR BROADCAST BEFORE 00:01 TUESDAY 3RD NOVEMBER 2009 Over 7 million UK adults may be gambling their lives with fake medicine1, 2 Research reveals how people are jeopardising their health by avoiding healthcare professionals and purchasing medicine from illicit online sources *** London, 3 November 2009. More than one in seven British adults surveyed (15%)1 admitted to bypassing the healthcare system to get hold of prescription only medicine without a prescription, a practice which 78% of GPs surveyed say is putting people’s health and potentially lives at risk3, as some of the medicines obtained in this way may be counterfeit. New research indicating the scale of the counterfeit medicine culture was released today as part of a hard-hitting campaign to educate the public of the risks involved in purchasing fake medicines from unregulated websites. The Get Real, Get A Prescription public awareness campaign is being launched in a partnership between Pfizer, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB), The Patients Association and HEART UK. Without recognising the dangers associated with counterfeit medicine, UK adults are putting too much trust in illicit websites that are potentially selling them. Research suggests that the majority (60%) of adults agree that they’re more trusting of all purchases they make online today compared to five years ago1. In addition, alarmingly almost a fifth (18%) of UK adults believe people who sell prescription only medicine without a prescription, are providing a service to the general public – offering cheaper medicines to those that need it1.
