LISA MENNA a Superstition by Chloe Olewitz PHOTO by JACQUE
LISA MENNA a Superstition By Chloe Olewitz PHOTO BY JACQUE MENNA Lisa, age 17, performing for Muhammad Ali at the 1982 Desert Magic Seminar Lisa Menna was one of the last to compete at the Las Vegas Desert Magic Seminar’s open close- up session in 1982, when she was 17 years old. It was a long day, and she remembers how the checked-out audience had perked up at the sight of a young woman in a white, form-fitting, knit dress. Waiting in the wings before her set, Menna noticed a celebrity sitting in the front row that no one had called on yet. She decided to go for it, and walked straight toward him to ask, “Could you please come help me?” Whatever attention she had gotten for being a gender anomaly in the 20- person close-up competition was dwarfed by the fact that the girl had just picked Muhammad Ali. When he joined her on stage, Menna doubled down on her carefree clown character. “Hi! My name’s Lisa! What’s your name?” She had no idea that her feigned innocence would get such a big reaction. “My name’s Joe,” Ali responded. “Joe Frazier.” More laughter. “Gosh Joe, you sure have big hands,” Menna said. The room erupted. Menna was born in Connecticut in 1964. When she was four years old, her family relocated to St. Louis, where she encountered magical clown Steve “Ickle Pickle” Bender at her older brother’s birthday party. When she was seven, Menna received her first magic set as a gift from her mother, who during her own youth had mailed in 57 Popsicle wrappers collected over the course of a single summer in exchange for a set of multiplying billiard balls. -

Ravenswood Ave. -Suite 116- Chicago, Illinois 60617 Introduction ollywood became the center of the magic world in 1963. That year, Dai Vernon, known to Hmagicians world wide as “The Professor,” moved to California. On arrival, Vernon took up residence at the Magic Castle, where he would remain a fixture for the next 25 years — and become an icon. From the Castle flowed Vernon’s dictum of natural magic; he avowed deep study of the art as a route to perfection. These and other mantras he would impart both through the written word and in person, to countless associates, fans and students. In 1964, a Midwestern sleight-of-hand artist, Bruce Cervon, also moved west. Southern California, he’d been assuredd, was the nexus of all things magical. The Magic Castle was the place to perform close-up magic. And Vernon was there. Almost immediately upon their initial meeting, Cervon and Vernon developed a strong, important friendship and student/teacher relationship. From their sessions came weighty ideas, concepts and published works: most prominently, Cervon’s Castle Notebooks and The Vernon Chronicles. -

The Official Newsletter of the Ann Arbor Magic Club / S.A.M 88 / I.B.M. 210 JAN. 2017 President’s Corner Magical Greetings everyone… and Happy New Year! Many of you know that I used to be the pastor of a small church. Every year on our anniversary date, I preached a sermon called, “Characteristics of a Good Church” using 1 Thessalonians 1 as my text. I preached it every single year. People would ask me, “when are you going to preach on something different?” “When we get it right”, was my reply. Well, I‟m repeating my new year‟s resolutions from last year… until I get it right! Feel free to adopt or adapt any or all of these for yourself! My Magical 2017 : : : I resolve to... Spend the first 3 months perusing ALL my magic books and noting items that catch my attention Spend the last 9 months revisiting that list and seeing what I can develop, incorporate, and use Routine 6 sets of 3 close up tricks so I can "do magic" at the drop of a hat (no pun intended). I do "parlor", "stand-up", or "nightclub" magic currently. Double the number of shows I did in 2016 Catalog ALL my tricks: what do I actually have? Buy NO new tricks just because it looks cool, or I'm curious. If it won't work in my act, I'm not going to buy it (unless I go to a conference or magic shop, of course) Rewatch all my magic videos and see what I can develop, incorporate, and use Develop and hone the skill of creating "mystery"; ie, where people feel magic is really taking place. -
