Lotz This essay explores the struggles experienced in the creation, production, and promotion of a U.S. television series that deliberately sought to encourage cultural reflection about ethnic diversity and defied industrial norms as an original narrative program produced for a cable network. Any Day Now (1998–2002) was the first successful original series produced for the Lifetime Television network and was one of the first successful original cable series. Through an analysis of the production process, interviews with the creators and writers of the series, and examination of the series’ promotion, this essay explores how the transition to a post-network era of industrial organization and competitive practice affected the production and promotion of the series and its narratives. These findings are informative both in terms of the specific case and as they might be extrapolated as characteristic of the development of the post-network era. By the late 1990s, the economy of the U.S. television industry had been significantly reconfigured from the fairly static relations that had characterized it from its 1950s origin to the mid 1980s. A variety of factors—including the success of cable and satellite transmission, the appearance of new broadcast networks, increased owner- ship conglomeration, decreased regulation, and the emergence of new technolo- gies—combined to usher in a new era of industry competition, forcing adjustments by traditional broadcast networks.

Beginning in January, people in the Charleston area who have cable television will be paying a little bit extra for the service. Liberty Telecommunications Inc., which ser­ vices Coles County with cable television chan­ nels, has announced that rates for the service will increase from $17.80 to $19.20 per month, a difference of $1.40, beginning with the January billing.     DOI: 10.14197/atr.20121779 Rebooting Trafficking Nicholas de Villiers Abstract: While popular psychology and appeals to emotion have unfortunately dominated discussions of ‗sex trafficking‘, this article suggests that feminist psychoanalytic film theory and theories of affect are still useful for making sense of the appeal of sensational exposés like Lifetime Television‘s Human Trafficking (2005). The dynamic of identification with (and impersonation of) a human trafficking ‗victim‘ by the rescuing Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent (Mira Sorvino) is particularly worthy of scrutiny. Film theory about the ‗rebooting‘ of film franchises (iconic brands like Batman) also helps explain the preponderance of similar programming—Sex Slaves (2005), Selling the Girl Next Door (2011), Trafficked (2016)—and the way contemporary discourses of human trafficking have effectively rebranded the myth of ‗white slavery‘. Yet, despite this deluge of information, I argue that we are no closer to defining who Tennessee Williams was than the day that he died. In fact, one might even go so far to say that with each publishing of a new, rediscovered play or correspondence, we move one-step further from a strict definition of Tennessee Williams. Indeed, our search for Tennessee Williams is a fruitless one as a platonic form of Williams does not exist. The real, complete, or authentic Tennessee is a mirage. For every text that is brought into the light another interpretation of Williams is born. This process is mimicked in the multiplicity of biographical solo-performances that playwrights keep writing about Tennessee Williams with each passing year. In this study, I examine the works of three different playwrights to see how they construct a fragmented image of Tennessee Williams within the genre of biographical solo-performance. I begin with an examination of Ray Stricklyn's Confession's of a Nightingale and how he fashions a performance of Williams's biography and celebrity. Next, I look at Will Scheffer's Tennessee and Me to examine how gay playwrights and activists have tried to reclaim Williams as a distinctly homosexual artist.

Low-socioeconomic status (low-SES) smokers are not quitting at the same rate as other smokers and the disparity in smoking prevalence between the most and least advantaged Australians contributes to health inequalities. National guidelines recommend a focus on these smokers, and reduced smoking in low-SES groups is a priority for Australia’s NTS. The overarching aim of this thesis was to evaluate effective approaches to smoking cessation, and to examine quantitatively and qualitatively the factors associated with the utilisation of smoking cessation treatment and smoking abstinence among low-SES smokers.
