Committee Member ______________________________ Marilyn Gadomski, Ph.D. Assistant Honors Director ______________________________ Date CHRISTIAN CROSS-OVER SONGWRITING 3 Abstract A cross-over song has been defined as a song written by a Christian artist aimed at a mainstream audience. An understanding of the core principles of cross-over songs and their relevance in contemporary culture is essential for Christian songwriters. Six albums marked by spiritual overtones or undertones, representing a broad spectrum of contemporary cross-over music, were examined. Selected songs were critiqued by analyzing the album of origin, lyrical content, author’s expressed worldview, and level of commercial success. Renaissance art also provided a historical parallel to modern day songwriting. Recommendations were developed for Christian songwriters to craft songs with greater effectiveness to impact the culture while adhering to a biblical worldview. CHRISTIAN CROSS-OVER SONGWRITING 4 A Survey of Christian Cross-Over Songwriting An exploration of Christian cross-over music can provide an objective framework for evaluating songs and developing guidelines for Christian songwriters so they can enhance their effectiveness in communicating with their audiences.

www.saveca.ca SAMAVEDA UPAKARMA – SEPTEMBER 7TH, 2013 (SATURDAY) Sama Veda Upakarma Prayoga for the year 2013 (07-09-2013) In the case of Sama Veda, the upakarma prayogam is very extensive and differs very much from the Upakarma prayoga of Rig and Yajur Vedis. They always do it in Hastha Nakshtra. It essentially consists of ten steps in the following order: 1.Panchagavya sammelanam 2.Snana Mahasankalpam 3.Brahmayagnam 4.Punyaham 5.Rishipooja(Uthsarjan Karma) 6.Deva,rishi, Pithru Tharpanam (264+12) 7.Ghata Poojai 8.Yagnopaveethadhaaranam 9.Vedarambam 10.Kankanadharanam The above have to be done with the instruction of a Guru but in modern times when people are scattered all over the world and also because well learned Sama Vedi Purohithas are very scarce, many people are forced to do it in their home depending on some handouts. Since most of the above steps are lengthy and involve proper chanting of Sama Veda Mantras, following three steps of the above 10 are recommended. They are: 1.Snana maha Sankalpam, 2,Brahma Yagnam 3.Yagnopaveetha dharanam MAHAA SANKALPAM (Aachamya+Wear Pavithram + Put Durbha Aasanam under the legs + Wear Two Dharbha between the Pavithram)Darbeshvaaseena: Darbhaan Dhaaryamaana: AUM SUKLAAM BARADHARAM VISHNUM SASHI VARNAM CHATHURBHUJAM PRASANNA VADHANAM DHYAAYETH SARVA VIGHNA UPASHAANTHAYE - OM BHUUHU, OM BHUVAHA, OM GUM SUVAHA, OM MAHAHA, OM JANAHA, OM THAPAHA, OOGUM SATHYAM OM THATSAVITHURVARENYAM BHARGO DEVASYA DEEMAHI DHEEYO-YONA PRACHOTHAYAATH - OM AAPO JYOTHEERASO AMRUTHAM BRAHMA BHURBUVASSUVAROM OM OM OM. www.saveca.ca

Fifty-four years after Germany played host to the second ever Eurovision Song Contest, the musical jamboree comes to Düsseldorf this May. It’s a very different world since ARD staged the show in 1957 with just 10 nations in a small TV studio in Frankfurt. This year, a record 43 countries will take part in the three shows, with a potential audience of 35,000 live in the Esprit Arena. All 10 nations from 1957 will be on show in Germany, but only two of their languages survive. The creaky phone lines that provided the results from the 100 judges have been superseded by state of the art, pan-continental technology that involves all the 125 million viewers watching at home. It’s a very different show indeed. Back in 1957, Lys Assia attempted to defend her Eurovision crown and this year Germany’s Lena will become the third artist taking a crack at the same challenge.
