YA L E UNIVERSITY A R T PRESS For Immediate Release GALLERY RELEASE April 29, 2021 ON THE BASIS OF ART: 150 YEARS OF WOMEN AT YALE Yale University Art Gallery celebrates the work of Yale-educated women artists in a new exhibition from September 2021 through January 2022 April 29, 2021, New Haven, Conn.—On the Basis of Art: 150 Years of Women at Yale celebrates the vital contributions of generations of Yale-trained women artists to the national and interna- tional art scene. Through an exploration of their work, the exhibition charts the history of women at the Yale School of Art (formerly Yale School of the Fine Arts) and traces the ways in which they challenged boundaries of time and cir- cumstance and forged avenues of opportunity—attaining gallery and museum representation, developing relation- ships with dedicated collectors, and securing professorships and teaching posts in a male-dominated art world. On view at the Yale University Art Gallery from September 10, 2021, through January 9, 2022, the exhibition commemorates two recent milestones: the 50th anniversary of coeducation at Yale Irene Weir (B.F.A. 1906), The Blacksmith, College and the 150th anniversary of Yale University’s admit- Chinon, France, ca. 1923. Interview CHRISTOPHER LYON: This is Christopher Lyon. I am with Robert Mangold in his studio in Washingtonville, New York. It's November 16, 2017. Good morning, and thank you for doing this. ROBERT MANGOLD: Well, good morning to you. CHRISTOPHER LYON: So, just to reiterate, I would like to keep the ball in your court as much as possible. What I find fascinating and hope we can talk about from various angles is your investigation, your exploration, whatever the best word would be, of how paintings communicate, in terms of all their parameters: color, scale, line, and so on. You've looked at a whole range of perceptual issues in relation to your work, but at the same time, you explored at great depth the many ways that the physical manifestation of a painting can be expressive. -

The exhibition will include drawings, photographs, paintings, and sculpture which illustrate the radical expansion of intellectual and stylistic expression in Europe and America since the 1960s. From Minimal to Conceptual Art has been made possible in part by The Circle of the National Gallery of Art. New Yorkers Dorothy and Herbert Vogel have assembled one of the country's most extensive collections of contemporary art. From Minimal to Conceptual Art will be the first major showing of their collection at the National Gallery of Art. Dorothy Vogel, a librarian, and Herbert Vogel, a postal clerk, both now retired, made front page news in January 1992 when the Gallery announced it would be receiving more than 2,000 paintings, drawings, and works of sculpture from their collection. Robert Mangold and Joel Shapiro: Angles in Color February 26 – May 25, 2019 Mignoni, 960 Madison Avenue, Second Floor, New York New York, NY – Mignoni Gallery is pleased to present Robert Mangold and Joel Shapiro: Angles in Color, an exhibition which explores both artists’ interest and continued study in color, form, line, shape, scale, and space. The exhibition includes four of Mangold’s plane panel and ring paintings alongside four of Shapiros abstracted figure sculptures in both wood and bronze. The reductive geometries explored by Robert Mangold and Joel Shapiro have long aligned them with the Minimalist art movement, yet their respective practices are not strictly exercises in pure formalism. Their intuitive approach to composition and materiality, their distinctive use of color, and their embrace of allegory conveys a Romantic sensibility that humanizes their otherwise angular art. About the Artists Born in North Tonawanda, New York in 1937, Robert Mangold began his studies at the Cleveland Institute of Art and subseQuently attended Yale University, graduating in 1962. Soon after, Mangold moved to New York, where he worked in the Museum of Modern Art, first as a guard and then in the library. While at the museum, he worked alongside Robert Ryman, Sol LeWitt, Dan Flavin, and the critic and writer, Lucy Lippard. He immersed himself in this group of Minimalist artists, all of whom lived around the Bowery in Lower Manhattan. Mangold’s work creates geometric objects in a variety of monochromatic tones, articulated with graphite stokes on canvas made up of one or various panels. The elegant lines interweave and interlock across the surface of the canvas, often competing with the shape of the support. -
