In common speech, they might be used, to describe leaving the Page | 15 Temple or another location. Luke 2:37, 4:13; Acts 5:37, 12:10, 15:38, 19:9. They were also used when Paul spoke of men’s abandoning “natural relations with women,” because they were “inflamed with lust for one another,” Romans 1:27, and in the exhortation to “turn away from” iniquity. II Timothy 2:19. kataleipo and enkataleipo are also translated “abandon.” The first word is milder and simply means, “to leave.” It is used descriptively of physical actions. enkataleipo has stronger moral and emotional overtones. Jesus was not abandoned, (enkataleipo) to the grave (Acts 2:27), and the resurrection proves that He was not left (kataleipo) there (Acts 2:31). Paul experienced persecution, but was deeply aware that he had not been abandoned (enkataleipo) by the Lord (II Corinthians 4:9). It is this latter word, however, that is used in Jesus’ cry from the cross, “Why have you forsaken Me?” (Matthew 27:46).
