  • Sustaining Quality Annual Report 2016-17 Annual Repo R T 2 0 1 6 - 1 7 Sustaining Quality
Sustaining Quality Annual Report 2016-17 Annual Repo r t 2 0 1 6 - 1 7 Sustaining Quality Annual Report 2016-17 Message from the Dean and Director The Institute has long had a reputation for delivering quality education. What does this rest on? For many, this rests on having admissions characterized by selectivity, teaching by discipline and examinations by integrity. These are critical aspects of quality and they stand out in a higher education environment where numerous examples can be given of the opposite. For many, the Institute’s reputation also rests on the success achieved by its graduates in their professional careers. An impressive proportion of leadership positions in Pakistan’s corporate sector is accounted for by graduates of the Institute, decade after decade. Some graduates have also achieved professional distinction in overseas jobs. Where do we stand today? I have the pleasure to report that several objective measures show that we continue to do well in terms of quality. For many years now, we have been strengthening the quality of our faculty. In FY13, we had 81 fulltime faculty of whom 34 had PhD qualifications. In FY17 we had 118 fulltime faculty of whom 65 had PhD qualifications. We have almost doubled the number of highly qualified faculty in five years. Research is internationally considered a mark of quality. The research orientation of our faculty has been rising over time. In calendar 2016, our faculty published 89 papers in journals and conference proceedings. What is more impressive is that 21 of these publications were in high-quality peer-reviewed international journals distinguished by a high rate of citation and, therefore, impact.

Let our younger generation know that patriotism is not a short and frenzied outburst of emotion but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime. Let us together give thanks to the Almighty for His infinite increased civic engagement and act as an antidote to the mercy and blessings for our independent homeland. It was with disenchantment and cynicism rampant among the young. this feeling of supplication that Greenwich University celebrated 14th of August and 6th of September, 2013, also attended by I feel truly proud of the brilliant performance of students who civil dignitaries and those of armed forces, to convey the put in all their hard work and dedication in both the events to message, particularly to our youth, that freedom and honour we prove to themselves and everyone what they are capable of. enjoy today did not appear by chance or was handed to us for Keep up the good work, you surely deserve this recognition! free. • Cosmopolitanism, Fundamentalism, and Empire: 9/11 Fiction and Film from Pakistan
Cosmopolitanism, Fundamentalism, and Empire: 9/11 Fiction and Film from Pakistan and the Pakistani Diaspora DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Suhaan Kiran Mehta Graduate Program in English The Ohio State University 2013 Dissertation Committee: Pranav Jani, Advisor Sean O’Sullivan James Phelan Martin Joseph Ponce Copyright by Suhaan Kiran Mehta 2013 Abstract This dissertation argues that 9/11 Pakistani novels and films privilege cosmopolitan encounters by Muslim, and occasionally non-Muslim, characters that are in conflict with power and simultaneously reject those interactions that are complicit with it. I define cosmopolitan acts as those that do not merely celebrate but critically engage with foreign cultures and peoples at home and abroad. For the purpose of this project, I confine my analysis of power to the influence wielded by religious fundamentalists and political empires. To make my argument, I examine six Pakistani texts in which 9/11 is not merely a temporal marker but central to their ideological contexts and narrative strategies. These include the novel The Wasted Vigil by Nadeem Aslam, the film Khuda Kay Liye by Shoaib Mansoor, the novel Burnt Shadows by Kamila Shamsie, the novel The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid, the novel Home Boy by H.M. Naqvi, and the film The War Within by Joseph Castelo (co-authored by Ayad Akhtar and Tom Glynn). Pakistani novelists and filmmakers have acquired global visibility in the last decade, but their contribution to our understanding of 9/11 has not been sufficiently acknowledged.
