  • 2D Animation Software You’Ll Ever Need
The 5 Types of Animation – A Beginner’s Guide What Is This Guide About? The purpose of this guide is to, well, guide you through the intricacies of becoming an animator. This guide is not about leaning how to animate, but only to breakdown the five different types (or genres) of animation available to you, and what you’ll need to start animating. Best software, best schools, and more. Styles covered: 1. Traditional animation 2. 2D Vector based animation 3. 3D computer animation 4. Motion graphics 5. Stop motion I hope that reading this will push you to take the first step in pursuing your dream of making animation. No more excuses. All you need to know is right here. Traditional Animator (2D, Cel, Hand Drawn) Traditional animation, sometimes referred to as cel animation, is one of the older forms of animation, in it the animator draws every frame to create the animation sequence. Just like they used to do in the old days of Disney. If you’ve ever had one of those flip-books when you were a kid, you’ll know what I mean. Sequential drawings screened quickly one after another create the illusion of movement. “There’s always room out there for the hand-drawn image. I personally like the imperfection of hand drawing as opposed to the slick look of computer animation.”Matt Groening About Traditional Animation In traditional animation, animators will draw images on a transparent piece of paper fitted on a peg using a colored pencil, one frame at the time. Animators will usually do test animations with very rough characters to see how many frames they would need to draw for the action to be properly perceived.

  • Masculinity in Children's Film
Masculinity in Children’s Film The Academy Award Winners Author: Natalie Kauklija Supervisor: Mariah Larsson Examiner: Tommy Gustafsson Spring 2018 Film Studies Bachelor Thesis Course Code 2FV30E Abstract This study analyzes the evolution of how the male gender is portrayed in five Academy Award winning animated films, starting in the year 2002 when the category was created. Because there have been seventeen award winning films in the animated film category, and there is a limitation regarding the scope for this paper, the winner from every fourth year have been analyzed; resulting in five films. These films are: Shrek (2001), Wallace and Gromit (2005), Up (2009), Frozen (2013) and Coco (2017). The films selected by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in the Animated Feature film category tend to be both critically and financially successful, and watched by children, young adults, and adults worldwide. How male heroes are portrayed are generally believed to affect not only young boys who are forming their identities (especially ages 6-14), but also views on gender behavioral expectations in girls. • Wallace & Gromit
WALLACE & GROMIT: THE CURSE OF THE WERE-RABBIT Programme Notes If Nick Park and co. at Aardman gradually established themselves as a sort of millennial plasticine Ealing, then surely ‘Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit’ is their diversion into Hammer horror territory. Aardman’s plunge into the daunting world of feature-length production had begun with ‘Chicken Run’ (2000), which set something of a precedent with its own co-opting of a broad, recognisable genre, on this occasion the wartime prison break drama, and the much-loved Wallace & Gromit followed suit with a good old-fashioned monster spooker. Ok, it tones down its terrors in favour of good old English standbys like garden fêtes, marrow-growing contests, and aerial dogfights, yet this in itself all shows a keen awareness of the frequently clichéd vision of Britain depicted in our genre fare, with emphasis often placed on class-system clashes (compare the respective foxhunter sequences in ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’, ‘The Tomb of Ligeia’, ‘The Plague of the Zombies’ and ‘The Final Conflict’, for example – our ‘proper’ horror films straying every bit as far from their fear focus and using traditional imagery to offer comment on wider issues). We probably have as many fictional ‘national treasures’ as we do real ones – for every Florence Nightingale or Mo Farah, say, there’s a ‘James Bond’ or ‘Sherlock Holmes’. An instant hit as soon as ‘A Grand Day Out’ took to the screens in 1989, both Wallace and Gromit leapt on to everyone’s list of praiseworthy favourites, consolidating their success with ‘The Wrong Trousers’ (1993), perhaps their defining half-hour, and ‘A Close Shave’ (1995).

A Successful Border Crossing in Chicken Run Introduction In the animated film Chicken Run, we learn the story of an entire hen farm trying to escape. The leaders of this escape are the co-protagonist of Ginger, a hen and Rocky, a rooster. I chose to explore the film in relation to the U.S.-Mexico border crossing experience as well as how the characters and the U.S. are represented. When watching the film, the audience witness criticism of the U.S. government, however, there are still details that glorify the U.S. through the character of Rocky. Throughout this paper I build on the possibility of the entire hen farm being general representations of Mexican migrants. With this said, my approach is to explore the content of Chicken Run in relation to the persistent paranoia that the U.S. government has had historically towards immigrants. Paranoia exists in spaces where it seems like the U.S. government is unable to control big waves of migration1. In multiple scenes of the film the hens pursue to flee from their heavily patrolled farm, these imagery mirrors the migrant experience of crossing the heavily militarized U.S.-Mexico border. When critically watching Chicken Run, we can notice an engagement in the U.S.-Mexico Border discourse created through the use of the hen and rooster characters as human representors rather than their animal portrayals given their accents, dialogue and actions. I find it significant to mention that this film has a global viewing audience since Dreamworks is an international company, therefore my interpretation is just one of the many possible.

VII. The New Golden Age Then something wonderful happened. Just when everything was looking as grim as it could for the art of animation, technology came to the rescue. Here was an art form born only because technology made it possible, almost died when the human costs in time and effort became too high, and now was rescued by technology again. The computer age saved animation. Since computers first came on the scene in the 50s, there have been people who have tried to create machinery and programs to make animation faster, easier and cheaper to both make and distribute. From machines like copiers and scanners, to computers that can draw and render, to the distribution of animation by cable, Internet, phones, tablets and video games - as one character says, “To infinity and beyond” - animation has been totally reborn. As the old animators of the Golden Age were dying off, the new technologies created a huge demand for the old craft. Fortunately, many of the old men were able to pass on their skills to a younger generation, which has helped the quality of today's animation meet and exceed the animation of the Golden Age. In 1985, Girard and Maciejewski at OSU publish a paper describing the use of inverse kinematics and dynamics for animation.! The first live-action film to feature a complete computer-animated character is released, "YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES."! Ken Perlin at NYU publishes a paper on noise functions for textures. He later applied this technique to add realism to character animations. In 1986, "A GREEK TRAGEDY" wins the Academy Award.
