DUES 2 0 1 REFERENDUM 4 Why the “torn” cover? After 14 years without an increase in dues, current rates are no longer sufficient to cover everything you want us to do for you. In order to respond to this financial shortfall, Council will be conducting a member referendum on an increase in both working and basic dues this coming February. Some history on Equity’s dues Dues were last adjusted in 1999, when basic $170 dues went from $50 per year to $135 per Basic Dues Compared with Costs Over Time year. Equity has successfully operated on a 160 breakeven basis since then. Until recently, that is. Nothing catastrophic Costs 150 occurred; it’s just that inflation eventually Dues caught up with us. TRiC38#1x12.qxp_TRiC'16 2017-05-30 11:03 AM Page 11 ARTICLES Ryga, Miss Donohue, and Me: Forty Years of The Ecstasy of Rita Joe in the University MOIRA DAY This article is dedicated to the memory of Frank Bueckert (1922-2017), a valued friend, mentor, and teacher. While the seminal role that George Ryga’s 1967 classic, The Ecstasy of Rita Joe, played in igniting the modern Canadian theatre has often been acknowledged, the extent to which its success also constituted a concentrated attack on what Ryga termed the “complacent educator” in 1977, and helped revolution- ize the publication and teaching of Canadian plays at the post-secondary level, may have been less well acknowledged. This article, which documents Moira Day’s own forty-year odyssey with the play in the (largely) prairie university classroom as both a student and an instructor, investigates the play’s initial impact on scholarship, publication, curriculum at the post-secondary level, and some of its ramifications on school and university production and actor training over the 1970 and 1980s. It also deals with the challenges of continuing to teach and interpret the play from the 1990s onward, as new practices and theories have continued to alter its meaning, and considers why this odd, iconoclastic text, despite its flaws, continues to fascinate us fifty years after its initial production. Created by the Parliament of Canada as a Centennial project during the 1960s, the NAC has become Canada’s foremost showcase for the performing arts. Today the NAC works with thousands of artists from across Canada and around the world and collaborates with dozens of arts organizations across the country. The NAC is strongly committed to being a leader and innovator in each of the performing arts fields in which it works: classical music, English theatre, French theatre, dance, and variety and community programming. It is also at the forefront of youth and education activities, supporting programs for young and emerging artists, presenting programs for young audiences and producing resources and study materials for teachers and students. The NAC is the only multidisciplinary, bilingual performing arts centre in North America and one of the largest in the world. Accountability and Funding The NAC reports to Parliament through the Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages. Of the NAC’s total revenue, approximately half is derived from an annual parliamentary appropriation, while the other half comes from earned revenue— box office sales, the NAC Foundation, NAC catering, le café (restaurant), commercial parking and facility rentals. -

Can I Get a Volunteer: Contemporary Improvised Theatre and the Audience Jonas McLean Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Master of Arts degree in Theatre Theory & Dramaturgy © Jonas McLean, Ottawa, Canada, 2019 ii Abstract In this thesis I present a new dramaturgical model for understand improvised theatre. Improvised theatre is a field full of experimentation, and the art form has recently been evolving faster than the theories used to understand it. Rather than relying on colloqiual terms such as “short form” and “long form”, I propose a new terminilogy based on Chris Johnston’s notion of “Restrictions”. I explain the use of the Restrictions: Location, Role, Narrative, Game, and Materials, and how to meassure the “Scope” of Restrictions by the Number of affected performers and Duration. I explain how Restrictions affect four elements of improvised performance: Space, Time, Speech, and Physicality. By creating a rubric to illustrate the interaction between Restrictions and these elements, I move towards a new foundation for understanding improvised theatre. In addition, I propose four metrics to meassure audience participation: Number of participants, Method of participation, Agency of the participat, and Duration of the participation. Using my Restriction rubric and audience participation metrics, I analyse four case studies. Each case study is a recent piece of improvised theatre. I attended each piece multiple times and interviewed the artists behind eacch production with a questionnaire. These are Blind Date and Undercover by Spontaneous Theatre, Quest Friends Forever, and GRIMprov’s Guided Roleplay. Each production features audience participation, the effects of which I explain using Erika Fischer-Lichte’s notion of the autopoietic feedback loop.By analysing these contemporary productions I demostrate the efficacy of my new rubrics and terminilogy. -

For the Anishinaabe people, the Teachings of the Seven Grandfathers is a set of teachings on human conduct toward others. As film crews employ many people from several different backgrounds, it’s a daily reminder to treat all creation with respect. And cast and crew took those words to heart every day and it contributed to a joyful set. Even more amazing given that there was a mix of crew of indigenous and non-indigenous people. The crew for Falls Around Her became an amalgamation of Toronto and Atikameksheng Anishnawbek/Sudbury/North Bay crews along with many indigenous locals. For the locals, it was the biggest production to ever have its home base on the reservation, and they were prepared for the challenge and the collective hard work of all is reflected on-screen. -
