Saint Church Sixth week of the Resurrection May 17, 2020 Jesus Appears to the Apostles in the Upper Room

The Upper Room, also known as the Cenacle, is in the southern part of the Old City of Jerusalem on Mount Zion, and is perhaps best known as the traditional site of the Last Supper since the fourth century AD. The current structure of the room dates approximately from the fourteenth century.

This is where the apostles stayed when they were in Jerusalem. It is where the Last Supper took place. The Cenacle is where Jesus washed his disciples’ feet, symbolizing the ministry of loving service. It is the place where the disciples gathered in fear after the death of Jesus and prayed, with Mary, for the coming of the Holy Spirit.

By tradition, this is the same room where Jesus appeared, both before and after the resurrection. It was here that the Risen One made visible his wounds to see and touch, and the room where the faith of Thomas emerged. It is where the Risen Lord breathed on them the Holy Spirit “on the evening of that first day of the week” It is where tongues of fire appeared to them on Pentecost and “they were all filled with the holy Spirit” That event marks the birthday of the Church in the presence of our Blessed Mother It is from there that the apostles went forth with boldness sharing the Good News.

The importance of this holy space never ends. In May 2014, Pope Francis visited the Holy Land and was permitted to celebrate Mass in the Cenacle during his three-day pilgrimage. As if to acknowledge this privilege, the pope in his homily said: “It is a great gift that the Lord has given us by bringing us together here in the Upper Room for the celebration of the Eucharist.”

The fruits of Jesus’s life and ministry, as witnessed in the precious moments in the Upper Room documented in Scripture, continue in and through the Church. In this humble space, the most important room in all of Christianity, where Jesus set a remarkable precedent of faith and service, we were given a new understanding of God’s love and the revolutionary power of the Holy Spirit was unleashed.

What happened in that Upper Room in Jerusalem almost two millennia ago, both before and after Christ’s resurrection, continues to have significant and grace-filled personal effects on every baptized Christian. The events that took place there continue to rest at the heart of our faith today.

While the Cenacle is a real place, it is also so much more than a simple room or a concrete historical lo- cation in Jerusalem. It is here that the apostles retreated from the world to be with Jesus, here they lis- tened with rapt attention as he revealed to them the mysteries that they would one day pass on to thousands of others. It was here, above all, that they were equipped to do the work for which they had been called.

والتسبي ُح هللِ دائماً. Brothers and sisters, My heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved. I can testify that they have a zeal for God, but it is not enlightened. For, being ignorant of the righteousness that comes from God, and seeking to establish their own, they have not submitted to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes. Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law that “the person who does these things will live by them.” But the righteousness that comes from faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (That is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? “The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, “No one who believes in him will be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Praise be to God always!

He said to them, “Why are you frightened, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? Look at my hands and my feet; see that it is I myself. Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.” And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet. While in their joy they were disbe- lieving and still wondering, he said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate in their presence. Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you — that everything written about me in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms must be fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures, and he said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. This is the truth! Peace be with you.

St. Nimatullah Hardini, May 16 (Canonization 2004)

He was born Youssef Kassab, in 1808 in the village of Hardine, in the North of , one of the seven children of George Kassab and Marium Raad, the daughter of a priest of the . As a boy, Youssef attended the school run by the monks of the Lebanese Maronite Order at the Monastery of St. Anthony in the village of Houb. After he finished his studies there in 1822, he entered the Monas- tery of St. Anthony in Qozhaya, entering the novitiate of the Order which had taught him in November 1828, at which time he took the monastic name of Nimatullah, which means "the grace of God".

As a new monk, Father Nimatullah was assigned by the abbot of the monastery to learn how to bind books. He spent the period of his initial formation in the monastic life in frequent prayer, sometimes passing the night in pray- er in the monastery church, praying to the Blessed Sacrament. Kassab made his religious profession of vows on November 14,1830, after which he was sent to the Monastery of Saints Cyprian and Justina in Kfifan, in the Batroun District, to pursue higher studies in preparation for ordination, which took place on Christmas Day 1833. Nimatullah Al-Hardini founded a free school in Kifkan and later in Bhersaf.

After ordination, he was assigned by the abbot to teach at the Order's seminary and to be the director of the semi- narians. Among his students was a famed member of the Order, St. Sharbel Makhluf, venerated by the entire Catholic Church. As a monk, Kassab spent his entire life in prayer and the service of his Order. He served on its General Council for most of the period 1845-1858, also serving as Assistant Abbot General by appointment of the Holy See, in ad- dition to his duties in the seminary. He refused, however, to be named Abbot General. He was severe on himself but a model of patience and forbearance to his fellow monks, to the point where he was reprimanded for his leniency. He bore all this as part of the challenge of monastic life. One of his brothers, who had also entered the monastery and had become a hermit, advised him to seek a similar solitude. Nimatullah de- clined, saying that community life was the true challenge for a monk. Kassab fell ill in the winter of 1858, dying after suffering nearly two weeks of high fever on December 14. In 1864, his tomb was opened for re-burial and, to the surprise of the monks, his body was found to be intact. Such was the reverence with which he was held during his life, that his body was exposed to the veneration of the public until 1927, when a Committee of Inquiry into his possible canonization had completed its work. His body was then buried in a small chapel.

The Ascension of Our Lord May 21

“When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God” (Luke 24:50—53). The story of Jesus’ Ascension is one that captivates our attention and wonder, and even more so, offers hope to His followers. This event is chronicled in the Gospels of Mark and Luke as well as the Acts of the Apostles. The Ascension is defined as, “The elevation of Christ into heaven by His own power in presence of His disciples the fortieth day after His Resurrection.” Not only is it celebrated the fortieth day after Easter, but also it always falls on a Thursday. Regarding the Feast of the Ascension, its prominence is relevant in the liturgical calendar, “It is one of the Ecumenical feasts ranking with the feasts of the Passion, of Easter and of Pentecost among the most solemn in the calendar, has a vigil and, since the fifteenth century, an octave which is set apart for a novena of preparation for Pentecost, in accordance with the directions of Leo XIII.” Mount Olivet is traditionally regarded as the site of the Ascension, “since after the Ascension the dis- ciples are described as returning to Jerusalem from the mount that is called Olivet, which is near Je- rusalem, within a Sabbath day’s journey.” Saint Helena constructed the first memorial there, which was tragically destroyed by the Persians in 614, and rebuilt only to be decimated again by Muslims. The only surviving vestige is an octagonal edifice enclosing the stone purportedly imprinted by Jesus’ feet. The Ascension is integrally related to Jesus’ Resurrection. Both offer Catholics a chance to practice the theological virtue of hope. They also comprise the first two Glorious Mysteries of the Rosary. Even more so, the Ascension and Resurrection are connected with the Passion of Jesus and Good Friday. Our lives are inevitably also going to be tested with trials and suffering. However, we are consoled by trusting in Jesus and hoping that, if we faithfully follow Him, we too shall be resurrected and united with Him one day. In the Nicene Creed that Catholics profess at the celebration of every Liturgy, the community voices its collective hope, “We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.” Catholics do not believe in the Resurrection and the Ascension as some sort of delusion, rather “The Christian believes in life after death not because of an argument, first of all, but because of a wit- ness.” The Church is that witness; ‘apostolic succession’ means first of all the chain of witnesses beginning with eyewitnesses.” The skeptic says, “‘What do you know for sure about life after death anyway? Have you ever been there? Have you come back to tell us?’” The Christian replies, “‘No, but I have an exceptionally good Friend who has. I believe Him, and I follow Him not only through life but also through death. Come along…’”
