Preserved in the Patrimony of the Oltenia Museum Craiova (Romania) Travaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle © 30 Juin Vol. LIV (1) pp. 105–114 «Grigore Antipa» 2011 DOI: 10.2478/v10191-011-0008-0 NEW DATA ON CETONIIDAE SPECIES (COLEOPTERA: SCARABAEOIDEA) PRESERVED IN THE PATRIMONY OF THE OLTENIA MUSEUM CRAIOVA (ROMANIA) CORNELIA CHIMIªLIU, GIMA MOGOªEANU Abstract. The paper includes new data concerning the species Cetoniidae family preserved in the patrimony of the Oltenia Museum Craiova. The examined material (1029 specs) was collected between 1951-2009 from 55 sites, mostly from Oltenia and two sites from Constanþa county. 17 of the 19 species and subspecies previously known in this area have been identified. The Protaetia (Netocia) cuprea metallica (Herbst, 1782) subspecies is mentioned for the first time in the fauna of Oltenia. The identification of the Oxythyrea cinctella (Schaum, 1841) reconfirms the presence of this species in the Romanian fauna. The only mention of this species belongs to Panin (1957). The following species have not been found again: Protaetia (Netocia) fieberi (Kraatz, 1880) and P. (Netocia) ungarica (Herbst, 1790) which were previously mentioned in the museum patrimony (Chimiºliu, 1999). At present, in the fauna of Oltenia 20 species and subspecies are confirmed, out of which 19 are preserved in the patrimony of the Oltenia Museum of Craiova. Key words: new data, Cetoniidae, Oltenia Museum patrimony, Craiova, Romania. INTRODUCTION The Cetoniidae species preserved in the patrimony of the Natural Sciences Department of the Oltenia Museum (Craiova) were partialy published. The Cetoniidae collected during the period 1951-1999 were published by Bobârnac et al. (1999) and Chimiºliu (1999, 2000). The species of the Trichiinae subfamily, collected during 1952-2000, were published by Chimiºliu (2001). Data held by Valgus hemipterus (Linnaeus, 1758), the only species of the Valginae subfamily present in the fauna of Romania, have not been published. The specimens from the “Ion Firu” Collection (Chimiºliu, 2000), acquired by the museum in 1982, are exceptions. In the papers published in 1999 and 2001, Chimiºliu summarizes and presents also data published by other authors regarding the presence of the two families in the fauna of Oltenia (a province of southern Romania). The researched papers date since the early twentieth century and begin with Fleck’s paper (1904). 106 CORNELIA CHIMIªLIU, GIMA MOGOªEANU MATERIAL AND METHODS The analyzed material (1029 specs) consists of the Cetoniinae collected from 57 sites from Oltenia (southern Romania) and Constanþa county (south-eastern Romania) during 1999-2009, the Trichiinae collected during 2000-2009 and the Valginae collected between 1951-2009 by the specialists of the Natural Sciences Department. The material gathering was made by vegetation sweeping or by manual collecting from the flowers of the host plants or from the tree trunks. The species identification was made using a microscope (MBC – 1) and Panin’s paper (1957) - as bibliographic material. The taxonomic system and the species nomenclature are those used in “Fauna Europaea”. For each species, the sites and the collection dates are specified. The collecting sites are presented in alphabetical order and the dates are presented in chronological order of the years and the months of collection. The collectors are presented by initials, according to the list of abbreviations. For the Valgus hemipterus species the earlier reports in the literature, for Oltenia, are also mentioned. The paper includes the abbreviations of the names of the specialists which have collected the material, the abbreviations of the counties to which the collecting sites belong, the collecting sites list and the list of the identified species. The Danube River Protection Convention and the Environment Programme of the Danube River Basin aim to the complex assessment of water quality at the national level and of its development trends in order to substantiate the measures and policies to reduce pollution, plus other pri- ority objectives as the quantification of the heavy metals content (Lack 1997). The monitored sections in the study, respectively Turnu Severin - Calafat - Bechet were part of the TNMN network for tracking the Danube water quality (Harmancioglu et al. 1997).The heavy metals are from both the upstream of Turnu Severin and from the Jiu River. After the study conducted in 2007-2009 there were found in some metals significant amounts of nickel, copper, chromium, arsenic and lead in particular. Key words: monitoring, heavy metals, aquatic ecosystem, water pollution, the Danube INTRODUCTION Danube represents the biggest water resource for Romania being more than double (85x109 cm/year) in comparison with the inland water (river and lakes), which represents about 40x109 cm/year, but the possibilities of their use in natural regime are limited because of different technical reasons (Botterweg & Rodda 1999). Even so the importance of the Danube health is of major concern for Romania as well as for other countries.

ABSTRACT The idea of undertaking this research emerged in 1993, when was taking in study for doctoral thesis region between Jiu and Olt River. Starting this year, for over 20 years, I studied very thoroughly this area and concluded that it has a rich and diverse natural and anthropic tourism potential that is not exploited to its true value. Also scientific researches have shown that the area benefits of an environment with particular beauty and purity, of an ethnographic and folklore thesaurus of great originality and attractiveness represented by: specific architecture, traditional crafts, folk techniques, ancestral habits, religion, holidays, filled with historical and art monuments, archeological sites, museums etc.. All these natural and human tourism resources constitute a very favorable and stimulating factor in the implementation and sustained development of agritourism and rural tourism activities in the great and the unique land between Jiu and Olt River. INTRODUCTION Agritourism and rural tourism as economic and socio-cultural activities are part of protection rules for built and natural environment, namely tourism based on ecological principles, became parts of ecotourism, which as definition and content goes beyond protected areas (Grolleau H., 1988 and Annick Deshons, 2006).

  • Analysis of Temperature, Precipitation and Potential Evapotranspiration Trends in Southern Oltenia in the Context of Climate Change
Geographia Technica, Vol. 09, Issue 2, 2014, pp 68 to 84 ANALYSIS OF TEMPERATURE, PRECIPITATION AND POTENTIAL EVAPOTRANSPIRATION TRENDS IN SOUTHERN OLTENIA IN THE CONTEXT OF CLIMATE CHANGE Remus PRĂVĂLIE1 ABSTRACT: The analysis of a territory’s climate trends are currently major research interests, as this is a viable method for identifying changes in climatic parameters against the background of global climate change, which at the same time can provide basic support for environmental system adjustments. The present study aims to identify the temporal trends of the main climate parameters (temperature, precipitation and potential evapotranspiration) in southern Oltenia, based on climate data provided by five regional weather stations (Drobeta Turnu Severin, Calafat, Craiova, Bechet and Turnu Măgurele). The analysis covers the 1961 - 2009 period, and the nonparametric Mann-Kendall test was used as trend quantification method. The entire study was conducted on three temporal analysis scales – annual, seasonal (spring, summer, autumn and winter) and monthly. The results showed specificities for each climatic parameter on each of the three temporal scales. For the average temperature, trends are mainly upward on annual and seasonal scales (generally statistically significant), except for autumn, when a slight cooling trend lacking statistical significance was found. The same general pattern was identified for evapotranspiration, save for the fact that autumn’s negative trends are statistically relevant. For rainfall, while trends are generally decreasing annually and seasonally, except for autumn (characterized by positive trends), its dynamics status is uncertain as a result of the general lack of statistical significance. The monthly regime analysis revealed visibly more pronounced trend dynamics for all three climatic parameters.
